Excitatory and inhibitory purinergic control of neck muscle nociception in anaesthetized mice.

Tension-type headache is associated with noxious input from neck muscles. Due to the importance of purinergic mechanisms in muscle nociception, experimental studies typically inject alpha,beta-methyleneadenosine 5'-triphosphate (alpha,beta-meATP). In contrast to native adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), alpha,beta-meATP has a narrow receptor profile and remains stable in tissue. The present study administered alpha,beta-meATP or ATP in semi-spinal neck muscles in anaesthetized mice (n = 65) in order to address different effects in neck muscle nociception. The jaw-opening reflex monitored the imp

The association between nocturnal trapezius muscle activity and shoulder and neck pain.

The study investigated the possible association between nocturnal trapezius muscle activity and shoulder and neck pain. Sixty female subjects participated in the study, 33 were classified as pain-afflicted on the basis of shoulder and neck pain reports for the previous 6 months. Electromyographic (EMG) activity was monitored bilaterally from the trapezius in all recordings. EMG recording of the deltoid, biceps, and hand flexors was included for 26 subjects (17 with pain) to provide a comparative basis for evaluation of the trapezius recordings. There was considerable variation in the amount of

Relationship between sleep, neck muscle activity, and pain in cervical dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: The interactions between sleep, neck muscle activity, and cervical spinal pain were examined in a controlled study with nine patients suffering from idiopathic cervical dystonia (ICD; also referred to as spasmodic torticollis), and nine gender- and age-matched controls. METHODS: From each participant, two all-night polysomnograms with additional electromyographic recordings from the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius muscles were obtained. The first night was for habituation to the laboratory environment; the second night for experimental data collection. Visual analogue scale

Calcific tendonitis of the longus colli muscle: a cause of atraumatic neck pain.

Retropharyngeal calcific tendonitis is a not-infrequent cause of atraumatic neck pain. Two patients presented with neck pain and stiffness, one with associated dysphagia. Cervical spine radiographs showed calcification anterior to the dens, establishing the diagnosis of calcific tendonitis of the longus colli muscle. Treatment with analgesics and antiinflammatory agents brought relief of symptoms within one week. A review of the literature shows that these patients had courses similar to those in previously reported cases.

Radiation Dose to Swallowing Muscles and Post-Radiotherapy Laryngeal Penetration or Aspiration in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Radiation-induced dysphagia can cause life-threatening complications including aspiration pneumonia. Consequently, studies have attempted to limit the radiation dose to the swallowing muscles to prevent radiation-induced dysphagia. However, data identifying the specific swallowing muscles associated with post-radiation dysphagia are lacking. Therefore, this case-control study aimed to identify the swallowing muscles whose radiotherapy-related damage is likely to cause radiation-induced dysphagia. METHODS: This retrospective study included 53 patients with head and neck

Recruitment properties and significance of short latency reflexes in neck and eye muscles evoked by brief lateral head accelerations.

Short lateral head accelerations were applied to investigate the recruitment properties of the reflexes underlying the earliest ocular and cervical electromyographic reflex responses to these disturbances. Components of both reflexes are vestibular dependent and have been termed "ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials" and "cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials", respectively. Previous investigations using a unilateral vestibular stimulus have indicated that some but not all these vestibular-dependent reflexes show a simple power law relationship to stimulus intensity. In partic

Effects of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on postural control and muscle activity of head, neck and trunk muscles.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects that an anterior cruciate ligament injury of the knee has on postural control and activity of neck, head and trunk muscles to investigate the existence of connections between the masticatory system and body posture. Surface electromyographic activity of the muscles at mandibular rest position, and during maximal voluntary clenching and posturometric and stabilometric measurements of 25 adult patients having pathology on the left knee were compared with a control non-pathological group. At rest, the patients showed a higher muscular activity of a

Bladder neck dysfunction: the effect of the alpha-adrenergic blocking agent phentolamine on bladder neck dysfunction and a fluorescent histochemical study of bladder neck smooth muscle.

Urodynamic examinations and fluorescent histochemical studies suggest that patients with bladder neck obstruction can be divided into two main groups (responders and nonresponders) based on the response of their urinary flow rate to phentolamine and that the adrenergic nervous system of the bladder neck has an important effect on the response in responders.

Predominant Neck Extensor Muscle Weakness: A Rare Manifestation of Idiopathic Polymyositis.

Dropped head syndrome (DHS) is a rare disease. It can be an isolated phenomenon or secondary to an underlying inflammatory, genetic, or sporadic neuromuscular disease. Idiopathic polymyositis as an underlying cause of DHS is rare and this association has been described very few times in the literature. We describe a case of biopsy-proven polymyositis presenting with predominant neck extensor muscle weakness. This case report goes further into analyzing the biomechanics of neck extension and putative reasons for predilection of the neck extensor muscles with advancing age in patients with DHS w

MRI Findings of Injury to the Longus Colli Muscle in Patients With Neck Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: The longus colli muscle (LCM) forms the bulk of the deep flexor muscles of the neck. To our knowledge, very little information on the effects of trauma on this muscle group has been published. We describe MRI findings related to injury of the LCM in patients with a history of neck trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A radiology department database was searched to identify patient medical records from 2008 to 2013 that included the keywords "longus colli" and "deep flexors." Patients with fractures and ligament injuries were excluded. Patients with other obvious large soft-tissue injurie

The Trapezius Muscle Flap: A Viable Alternative for Posterior Scalp and Neck Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The trapezius muscle flap is not usually the first reconstructive option for skin and soft tissue defects in the posterior neck and scalp due to surgeons' unfamiliarity with the surgical anatomy and developments in free tissue transfer techniques. The goals of this study were to describe the clinical use of trapezius flaps in posterior neck and scalp reconstruction, and to investigate the vascular anatomy of trapezius flaps in Asians in order to obtain information facilitating the safe design and elevation of flaps in which most of the muscle is preserved. METHODS: A retrospective

Neck muscle afferents influence oromotor and cardiorespiratory brainstem neural circuits.

Sensory information arising from the upper neck is important in the reflex control of posture and eye position. It has also been linked to the autonomic control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and cervical dystonia, which involve disturbance to the neck region, can often present with abnormalities to the oromotor, respiratory and cardiovascular systems. We investigated the potential neural pathways underlying such symptoms. Simulating neck afferent activity by electrical stimulation of the second cervical nerve in a working heart brainstem pre

The effect of fear of movement on muscle activation in posttraumatic neck pain disability.

Studies using surface electromyography have demonstrated a reorganization of muscle activation patterns of the neck and shoulder muscles in patients with posttraumatic neck pain disability. The neurophysiologically oriented "pain adaptation" model explains this reorganization as a useful adaptation to prevent further pain and injury. The cognitive-behavioral-oriented "fear avoidance" model suggests that fear of movement, in addition to the effects of pain, modulates the muscle activation level. We analyzed the extent to which pain and fear of movement influenced the activation patterns of the

Neck and other muscle pains in autonomic failure: their association with orthostatic hypotension.

Neck pain in the suboccipital and paracervical region ('coathanger' configuration) is often reported by patients with autonomic failure and orthostatic hypotension. The frequency of this pain, along with pains in the buttock and calf regions, was determined by questionnaire in two major groups with primary chronic autonomic failure--pure autonomic failure (PAF) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Comparisons were made with Parkinson's disease, cerebellar degeneration and other disorders in which neurological symptoms overlap but in which there was neither autonomic failure nor orthostatic hypot

Nemaline bodies of skeletal muscle fibers of the neck in a case of pharyngeal cancer.

Nemaline bodies were found in the regenerating muscle fibers of the neck of a 74-year-old Japanese male with pharyngeal cancer. Histologically, the nemaline bodies were needle-shaped structures and hematoxophilic with phosphotungstic acid-hematoxylin stain. Electron microscopic examination suggested that they arise as extensions of the Z bands. Although nemaline bodies occur in a variety of pathological conditions other than nemaline myopathy, their occurrence in regenerating skeletal muscle fibers invaded by cancer has not been reported previously. The pathogenesis of the nemaline body format

[Use of neck muscle in the correction of facial asymmetry. The Barron-Tessier flap].

The musculocutaneous or purely muscular flap from the platysma can be used effectively for repair of loss of substance of the skin and mucous membranes of the lower third of the face, and also for contour reconstruction of the soft tissues of the face in such difficult indications as Romberg's progressive facial hemi-atrophy. Based on the original description by Barron in 1965, Paul Tessier has widely developed and trained in the use of this procedure for the last 15 years. The operative technique is described, indications and contra-indications discussed, and long-term results and tactics to
