Injuries to staff engaged in foot-and-mouth disease eradication in Japan.

BACKGROUND: In April 2010, a large-scale outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, a highly infectious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, was reported in Miyazaki prefecture in Japan. Many staff were dispatched to the epidemic area to undertake containment measures. Various injuries were reported among the dispatched staff. AIMS: To study the characteristics of injuries that occurred during containment measures and to identify the characteristics of those injured. METHODS: We analysed records of injuries that occurred among staff dispatched from national organizations and prefectures other t

Infectious risk for healthcare workers: evaluation and prevention.

Exposure to pathogenic agents is a major occupational risk factor in healthcare facilities. The most common pathogenic agents are human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In Italy, about 70-80% of all cases of exposure to biological agents result from injuries caused by needles or other sharp instruments used during healthcare procedures. These accidents place a high economic burden on healthcare facilities. Indeed, each event is estimated to cost around € 375. Various studies have shown that the adoption of needlestick-prevention devices reduces

Managing sharps injuries and other occupational exposures to HIV, HBV, and HCV in the dermatology office.

Dermatologists and their staff are at risk for needlestick injuries and exposures to body fluids. Despite the availability of treatment to reduce the risk of blood-borne infection, many exposures go unreported. This paper identifies current recommendations and the specific details for response to occupational exposures to HIV, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus in the dermatology office. Issues surrounding each virus are discussed individually, and a summary step-by-step algorithm of how to proceed in the event of an occupational exposure is presented. In addition, a focused Practice Imp

Occupational hazards to health care workers: diverse, ill-defined, and not fully appreciated.

Health care workers are challenged by an imposing group of occupational hazards. These hazards include exposure to ionizing radiation, stress, injury, infectious agents, and chemicals. The magnitude and diversity of these hazards are not fully appreciated. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic has created additional occupational hazards and has focused attention on the problem of occupational hazards to health care workers. Concern over the nosocomial transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus has contributed to efforts to implement universal infection control precautions and t

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Toward Needle Stick Injury Among Health Care Workers in Mogadishu Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSIs) remain a major occupational hazard among healthcare workers (HCWs), increasing the risk of exposure to blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although largely preventable, NSIs continue to occur frequently in fragile and resource-limited health systems, including Somalia. This study assessed healthcare workers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding NSIs in Mogadishu, Somalia, to identify existing gaps and inform occupational safety interventions. METHODS: A facilit

Laboratory-acquired malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, and toxoplasmosis.

Because of renewed interest in parasitic diseases, increasing numbers of persons in clinical and research laboratories have the potential for exposure to parasites and therefore are at risk for acquiring parasitic infections. In this review of laboratory-acquired parasitic infections, we concentrate on protozoan diseases that frequently have been reported to be laboratory acquired: malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis (American and African), and toxoplasmosis. These diseases can be severe, even fatal, and may be difficult to diagnose. Many laboratorians who have acquired these diseases did

Sharps injuries involving a sheathed needle.

Two dental nurses each sustained a sharps injury while attempting to remove the sheathed needle from a used dental local anaesthetic syringe. The needle had been bent inadvertently during use. Neither of the dental nurses were aware that the needle had perforated the side of the sheath during resheathing. This incident emphasises the need for constant vigilance during the disposal of sharps and for the routine avoidance of direct contact with sheathed or unsheathed needles and other sharps after use.

A descriptive analysis of occupational health exposures in an urban emergency medical services system: 2007-2009.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital providers are exposed to various infectious disease hazards. Examining specific infectious exposures would be useful in describing their current trends as well as guidance with appropriate protective measures an emergency medical services (EMS) system should consider. OBJECTIVE: To describe the types of infectious occupational health exposures and associated outcomes reported at an urban EMS system. METHODS: A retrospective review of all reported exposures was performed for a three-year period from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2009. Descriptive analysis was perf

Primary inoculation skin tuberculosis by accidental needle stick.

A 42-year-old female laboratory worker presented with a left index finger skin lesion after an accidental prick while handling samples of a cultural exam of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Surgical excision was performed and pathology analysis revealed a dermic chronic inflammatory process with no granulomas. Later, a non-painful lymphadenopathy appeared in the left axilla as well as brownish indurated skin lesions in the lower limbs consistent with erythema nodosum. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the lymph node revealed epithelioid granulomas, Langhans' multinucleated giant cells and the presen

Minimum infective dose of HIV for parenteral dosimetry.

The probability of HIV-1 transmission in a small blood exposure such as a needlestick injury or an unsafe medical injection has been estimated indirectly. Now that several comparable laboratory simulations have provided data on inoculum volumes for such exposures, the epidemiological evidence supporting these estimates can be validated and qualified using dosimetry. This review of data on infective titre, viral load and injection inoculum volume compares three approaches to HIV dosimetry. Agreement across the three approaches indicates that unsafe medical injections are several times more like

Sharps injuries in ophthalmic practice.

PURPOSE: Accidental sharps injuries are a potential route for transmission of blood-borne infection to healthcare workers. Ophthalmic staff in particular are at risk of sustaining such injuries due to the microsurgical nature of the speciality. Forthcoming European Union legislation aimed at reducing sharps injuries requires the development of risk-based sharps policy. The authors believe that this is the first study to assess the risks of sharps injuries and their management specific to ophthalmic practice within the European Union. METHODS: A retrospective review of all reported sharps inju

Clinical Application of a Safe Blood Sampling Device with an Indwelling Needle.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: The traditional indwelling needle catheter is hard and can only complete one puncture at a time. The safety and indwelling needle catheter is soft, with a large lumen, with high success rate of blood collection, and one puncture completes two operations, so it is of important value and significance to study the new safety and indwelling needle. To explore the clinical utility of a novel blood collection device with indwelling needle for blood collection among pediatric patients. METHODS: A total of 300 children who were admitted to the children's hospital from March to June 2020 w

[Cubital nerve injury].

One of the more frequently accomplished treatment job in the nursing profession is blood extraction. The preferred location is the elbow flection, in the cephalic or basilic veins. Puncture in one of those veins may produce a series of complications as described in every procedure handbook in print. One of them, very rare, is the punction of cubital nerve that may lead to serious consequences for the patient.

[Injuries from needles contaminated with hepatitis C virus: how high is the risk of seroconversion for medical personnel really?].

The risk of infection after injury with a needle contaminated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is thought to be about 3%, but this assumption is mainly based on studies published in the 1990's, which were limited by small sample sizes and insensitive HCV-RNA assays. We therefore investigated needle injuries at the Hannover Medical School over a period of 6 years and performed a systematic review of the literature identifying 22 studies with a total of 6,956 injuries with HCV contaminated needles. Between 2000 and 2005, 1,431 occupational injuries were reported at our institution and two-thirds wer

Accidental transmission of HCV and treatment with interferon.

Accidental transmission of contagious pathogens, especially hepatitis C virus (HCV), by needlestick or other means as an occupational hazard for medical staff is of concern. We retrospectively analysed cases of work-related accidental injury with pathogens such as hepatitis B virus (HBV), HCV, syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reported to the centres for disease control at 15 hospitals (total 5776 beds) in the Gunma prefecture, Japan, from December 1990 to August 1993 (24.7 months). There were 416 such cases (16.8 cases/month), with an incidence of 0.2-3.5 accidents per month per

The impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on outcome and practice in trauma: past, present and future.

Since the initial description of a concentrated outbreak of pneumocystis carnii pneumonia in 1981, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic has accounted for nearly 25 million deaths worldwide. This review focuses on estimations of prevalence by geographic region and identification of high-risk populations within each region, outcome for trauma patients with HIV and AIDS and risk management for health care workers who sustain occupational exposures. Trauma surgeons are more likely to encounter patients infected with HIV in geographic areas where
