Area-Level Factors of Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents in European Neighborhoods - a Systematic Review.

The WHO emphasizes the importance of taking area-level factors into account when formulating public health interventions. The aim of this systematic review was to identify which area-level factors are associated with children's dental caries in Europe and might therefore be a suitable starting point for public health interventions. We conducted a systematic review based on a search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library including all European studies on caries in children and their area-level factors published since the year 2000 in English or German. We included 39 studies and identi

Do Neighborhoods Matter? A Systematic Review of Modifiable Risk Factors for Obesity among Low Socio-Economic Status Black and Hispanic Children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity increases the risk of obesity and harmful comorbidities later in life. It is influenced by characteristics of a child's neighborhood, particularly among underserved groups. Our objective was to systematically review the evidence relating neighborhood environment and obesity risk among urban, low socioeconomic status (SES) Black and Hispanic children. METHODS: We included studies published from 1993 through early 2017 from PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Sociological Abstracts databases investigating relationships between empirically measured neighborhood char

Neighborhood Contexts and Healthcare Utilization in Patients with Breast Cancer Receiving Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Racialized economic segregation is linked to higher cancer-specific mortality; however, its impact on healthcare utilization (HCU) remains unclear. This study used the metric Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE) and evaluated the association between racial residential segregation (ICErace), racialized economic segregation (ICErace + income), and HCU among patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy. METHODS: Patients ≥18 years who received chemotherapy and surgical management for stage I to III breast cancer (2012-2020) were identified in the electronic health recor

Street-view vegetation, human mobility, and dengue fever: context-dependent risk in urban green spaces.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between urban vegetation and dengue risk remains unclear, partly because most studies rely on static residential exposure and coarse greenness measures. This study examined how street-view vegetation and human mobility jointly influence neighborhood-level dengue risk in Guangzhou, China. METHODS: We analyzed 1,054 communities in Guangzhou using 3,972 locally acquired dengue cases from 2015 to 2019. Street-view images were used to derive grass, plant, and tree cover, while Landsat imagery provided NDVI. Row-standardized origin-destination mobility networks were use

Unequal neighborhoods, unequal skills: Adaptive functioning and access to community resources.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between children's adaptive functioning and neighborhood resources - such as school quality, access to healthy food, green spaces, and housing quality - using a large, diverse clinical outpatient sample. METHOD: Pediatric outpatients (N = 6,942; age M = 10.44 years; 67.0% male; 50.3% White; 33.9% Medicaid), aged 1-18, who underwent neuropsychological or psychological evaluation were included if their caregiver completed the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, 3rd Edition (ABAS-3) and had a nationally normed Child Opportunity Index (COI) score, a composi

Impact of neighbourhood and environmental factors on the risk of incident cardiovascular disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: We aimed to study the association of five key neighbourhood exposures in large cohort studies and risk of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase from database inception to 20th October 2024. Included studies reported both incident (first-time) CVD diagnosis and neighbourhood exposures across five domains: retail environment, health services, physical environment, pollution, and neighbourhood deprivation. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed to estimate pooled risk o

Mexican-origin parent and child reported neighborhood factors and youth substance use.

BACKGROUND: Structural oppression affects health behaviors through residence in suboptimal neighborhoods and exposure to community violence. Youth and parents report perceptions of neighborhood factors that can affect youth substance use behaviors. Given that Latinx youth report higher levels of perceived community violence than other racial and ethnic groups, it is imperative to examine how youth- and parent-perceived neighborhood-level factors may relate to youth substance use. METHODS: Data were collected using clinical interviews with family triads (fathers, mothers, and youth) and parent

Types and cost of wellness services provided by a neighborhood-based academic nursing center.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased insurance coverage since 2010, racial and ethnic minorities in the United States still receive less medical care than White counterparts. The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing's Center for Community Programs, Innovation, and Scholarship (COMPASS Center) provides free wellness services, aiming to address healthcare disparities in the neighborhoods. OBJECTIVE: To delineate the types and cost of wellness services provided by the COMPASS Center. METHODS: The study employed a secondary analysis design, utilizing Qualtrics surveys to assess wellness service data from 20

Neighborhood environment associations with cognitive function and structural brain measures in older African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Since older adults spend significant time in their neighborhood environment, environmental factors such as neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, high racial segregation, low healthy food availability, low access to recreation, and minimal social engagement may have adverse effects on cognitive function and increase susceptibility to dementia. DNA methylation, which is associated with neighborhood characteristics as well as cognitive function and white matter hyperintensity (WMH), may act as a mediator between neighborhood characteristics and neurocognitive outcomes. METHODS: In

Neighborhood Deprivation and Risks of Autoimmune Disorders: A National Cohort Study in Sweden.

Background: No study to date, as far as we know, has analyzed the potential effect of neighborhood-level deprivation on autoimmune disorders (ADs), when adjusted for individual-level characteristics. Methods: A total of 5.4 million individuals from 8363 neighborhoods, comprising the whole Swedish population (ages 25-74 years), were followed for the period 1 January 2000, until admission due to diagnosis of ADs during the period of the study, or the conclusion of the study (31 December 2010). We used a neighborhood deprivation index, constructed from variables such as low education, low income,

Neighborhood, family, and subjective socioeconomic status: How do they relate to adolescent health?

This study investigated the role of neighborhood, family, and individual subjective socioeconomic status (SES) in predicting adolescent physical health and psychological characteristics. Three hundred fifteen adolescents completed assessments of blood pressure, cortisol, and body mass index (BMI). Results revealed that lower neighborhood SES was associated with higher BMI and lower basal cortisol levels and that these effects persisted after controlling for family SES. Both family SES and neighborhood SES predicted negative psychological characteristics and experiences such as hostility and di

Neighborhood social capital and achieved mobility of older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations of neighborhood social capital and mobility of older adults. METHOD: A community-based survey (Philadelphia, 2010) assessed mobility (Life-Space Assessment [LSA]; range = 0-104) of older adults (n = 675, census tracts = 256). Social capital was assessed for all adults interviewed from 2002-2010 (n = 13,822, census tracts = 374). Generalized estimating equations adjusted for individual- and neighborhood-level characteristics estimated mean differences and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in mobility by social capital tertiles. Neighborhoods can be sexist too: Hostile sexism and risk of intimate partner violence across city neighborhoods.

Hostile sexism reflects prejudices and hostile attitudes toward women that may justify and facilitate intimate partner violence (IPV). The present study aimed to measure and map hostile sexism attitudes at the neighborhood level, and analyzed whether neighborhood-level hostile sexism was associated with the risk of IPV across city neighborhoods (Valencia, Spain). We used geocoded data on IPV cases (N = 2,060) aggregated at the census block group level (N = 552). Informed by a social disorganization theoretical framework, neighborhood-level covariates included administrative data on sociodemogr

Neighborhood deprivation and childhood autism: a nationwide study from Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether there is an association between neighborhood deprivation and childhood autism, after accounting for family- and individual-level sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: An open cohort of all children aged 2-11 years was followed between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2010. Childhood residential locations were geocoded and classified according to neighborhood deprivation (an index of low education, low income, unemployment, and receipt of welfare assistance). Data were analyzed by multilevel logistic regression, with family- and individual-level characteristi

Cognability across adulthood: A qualitative investigation of neighborhoods and cognitive health behaviors.

While geographic variation in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) rates suggests that environmental factors are important in the development of dementia, understanding of specific neighborhood sites that impact dementia risk is limited, especially in early and mid adulthood. This paper extends Cognability to a life course perspective to conceptualize how neighborhoods may support cognitive health behaviors including physical activity, diet, cognitive stimulation, and socialization across adulthood. The Neighborhoods and Health at All Ages Study employed stationary and mobile inter

Neighborhood Social Determinants of Health Patterns and Youth Sports Participation: Evidence from the ABCD Study.

PURPOSE: Participation in sports contributes substantially to children's physical health, psychological well-being, and cognitive development. Despite national initiatives to increase youth sports participation, inequities remain. Socioeconomic disadvantage, racial and ethnic minority status, and other social determinants of health (SDOH) are associated with lower engagement. However, most research addresses isolated factors rather than cumulative neighborhood-level SDOH. This study identified neighborhood SDOH profiles and examined their associations with sports participation. METHODS: Basel

Built Environment Audits Across Space and Time for Estimating Time-Varying Exposures: Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood disinvestment, characterized by built environment disrepair and deterioration, has been linked to health behaviors and outcomes, including cancer survival. However, disinvestment temporal dynamics, including time-lagged exposure estimates among colorectal cancer (CRC) cases, remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe and validate a spatiotemporal neighborhood audit protocol using Google Street View imagery, develop and compare predictive spatiotemporal models of neighborhood disinvestment, and examine time-lagged associations between disinvestment a

Examining the link between housing characteristics and individual mental health within the context of socio-spatial inequality in China.

Housing is not only a fundamental necessity but also a critical investment that significantly impacts mental health. This study investigates the relationship between residential and financial housing attributes and depressive symptoms, with a focus on the moderating role of socio-spatial factors, particularly housing inequality. Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) and applying hierarchical linear modeling, the analysis compares the explanatory power of residential attributes (i.e., space, condition, and neighborhood environment) and financial attributes (i.e., tenure, quantit

The causal impact of urbanicity on neighbourhood psychosis prevalence.

There is considerable evidence of elevated psychosis rates in more urban settings. However, the urbanicity effect is confounded with other neighbourhood contextual effects, such as from deprivation and crime. To assess the nature of the underlying urbanicity effect, removing distorting effects of confounders, we consider a novel method to assessing causality in spatial applications: a propensity weight approach, with weights obtained by entropy optimization, and adjusting for the spatial overlap in the urbanicity effect via a bivariate exposure approach. The application is to the effect of urb
