Nematode dermatitis due to Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode that primarily infects Canidae. The adult parasites are found in the pulmonary arterial circulation and the right side of the heart. The most common clinical sign is respiratory dysfunction. Bleeding, neurological, ocular, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders are also reported. Skin lesions are very unusual. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: This report describes a nematode dermatitis due to A. vasorum infection. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of a dog infected with this parasite that initially presented with skin

Mucosal immune responses following intestinal nematode infection.

In most natural environments, the large majority of mammals harbour parasitic helminths that often live as adults within the intestine for prolonged periods (1-2 years). Although these organisms have been eradicated to a large extent within westernized human populations, those living within rural areas of developing countries continue to suffer from high infection rates. Indeed, recent estimates indicate that approximately 2.5 billion people worldwide, mainly children, currently suffer from infection with intestinal helminths (also known as geohelminths and soil-transmitted helminths) . Identification of genes responding to nematode infection in red grouse.

The identification of genes involved in a host's response to parasite infection provides both a means for understanding the pathways involved in immune defence and a target for examining host-parasite co-evolution. Most studies rely on a candidate gene approach derived from model systems to identify gene targets of interest, and there have been a dearth of studies geared towards providing a holistic overview of immune response from natural populations. We carried out an experiment in a natural population of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) to manipulate levels of Trichostrongylus tenuis p

Intestinal nematode infection ameliorates experimental colitis in mice.

Epidemiological studies suggest that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is common in developed countries and rare in countries where intestinal nematode infections are common. T cells are critical in many immune responses, including those associated with IBD and nematode infection. Among the distinct T helper (Th) cell subsets, Th1-type immune response is predominantly associated with Crohn's disease, while many nematode infections generate a strong Th2 response. The reciprocal cross regulation between Th1 and Th2 cells suggests that generation of a Th2 response by nematodes could prevent or red

Interleukin-12 promotes a chronic intestinal nematode infection.

Resistance and susceptibility to the intestinal parasite Trichuris muris has been shown to be due to a dominant T helper 2 (Th2) and a dominant Th1 response, respectively. The factors determining the initial polarization of the immune response remain largely unresolved, although the cytokine environment at the time of antigen presentation clearly plays an essential role. Interleukin (IL)-12, a cytokine produced mainly by macrophages, dendritic cells, and other monocytes has been shown to be important in driving a strong Th1 response by stimulating the production of interferon (IFN)-gamma from

Prevalence and diversity of gastro-intestinal nematode infections in British cattle and implications for biosecurity.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) can impact on cattle health and welfare as well as cause economic losses associated with lower productivity but are often overlooked by farmers as a sub-clinical issue. Infections are routinely controlled with prophylactic use of anthelmintics but resistance to the available products has been reported. The prevalence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in cattle GIN is advancing in certain species, making control more challenging. This study shows the current prevalence and diversity of GIN populations in British commercial cattle herds and the extent of infection

Effect of fall-grazed sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) on gastrointestinal nematode infections of growing goats.

High prevalence of anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in goats has increased pressure to find effective, alternative non-synthetic control methods, one of which is adding forage of the high condensed tannin (CT) legume sericea lespedeza (SL; Lespedeza cuneata) to the animal's diet. Previous work has demonstrated good efficacy of dried SL (hay, pellets) against small ruminant GIN, but information is lacking on consumption of fresh SL, particularly during the late summer-autumn period in the southern USA when perennial warm-season grass pastures are often low in quality. Evaluation of the efficacy of pyrantel-oxantel for the treatment of soil-transmitted nematode infections.

A randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy of pyrantel-oxantel (10 mg/kg) with mebendazole (500 mg) was performed on 1329 schoolchildren aged 6-9 years on Pemba Island in September-October 2000 to evaluate alternative single-dose drugs for regular treatment of intestinal nematode infections. Both mebendazole and pyrantel-oxantel were very effective in eliminating Ascaris lumbricoides infection, inducing cure rates of more than 96% and reducing the mean egg counts by more than 95%. Both drugs had a moderate efficacy against Trichuris trichiura infection, but pyrantel-oxantel had a hig

A comparison of sampling methods with respect to cattle-visiting Muscidae and their nematode infections.

Cattle-visiting Muscidae were sampled with a handnet from a blood-smeared Masonite panel as well as grazing heifers and dairy cows in south-central Sweden. All flies were examined in search of nematodes. Only Musca autumnalis was infected with nematodes (Parafilaria bovicola, Thelazia spp. and Heterotylenchus autumnalis). The only mixed infections found involved P. bovicola and Thelazia spp. Most M. autumnalis infected with P. bovicola and Thelazia spp. were found during the two first months of the grazing season, whereas the prevalence of specimens infected with H. autumnalis remained about t

Gastric nematode co-infections and redescription of Neoterranova serrata in Arapaima gigas from Central Amazon.

In the Amazon region, Arapaima gigas holds significant gastronomic and cultural value compared to other fish species due to its large size. This fish is home to various helminth species that parasitise primarily its gastrointestinal organs. During the 2023 dry season, a total of 60 gastrointestinal organs from A. gigas specimens were collected from a fisheries management program conducted by local residents within the Mamirauá Reserve. For gastric parasitological analysis, each organ was separated in containers, and the parasites were recovered, washed, and fixed in 70% alcohol for analysis by

A review of the epidemiology and control of gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle in Zimbabwe.

In this review, the main gastrointestinal nematodes infecting cattle in Zimbabwe and the epidemiological factors influencing their occurrence are reviewed and discussed. Nineteen gastrointestinal nematode species that belong to seven families have been found to occur in cattle in Zimbabwe. The main genera reported to date are Cooperia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Oesophagostomum and the dominant species are Cooperia pectinata, Cooperia punctata, Haemonchus placei and Trichostrongylus axei. The mixed infection by several species from the genera is the cause of parasitic gastroenteritis in
