Giant cell tumor of soft tissue of the colon: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: A giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign neoplasm characterized by mixture of mononuclear cells and multinucleated cells. A GCT of soft tissue (GCT-ST) is developed in various extraosseous sites, but GCT-ST of the gastrointestinal tract is very rare. GCT-ST usually has a benign course, but rare cases reported malignant potential of the tumor. Therefore, complete resection is required to prevent local recurrence or distant metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old woman was admitted for follow-up colonoscopy who underwent the colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) of a la

Diagnosis and surgical management of an extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the brachial plexus in a Belgian shepherd dog.

An 11-year-old Belgian shepherd presented with progressive right thoracic limb lameness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a brachial plexus neoplasm and cytology was suggestive of a sarcoma. The patient underwent forequarter amputation and hemilaminectomy of the fifth cervical to first thoracic vertebrae with nerve root transection. Histopathology confirmed extraskeletal osteosarcoma. Twelve months post-operatively, the dog was exercising normally, and computed tomography did not identify local recurrence or metastatic disease. This is the first recorded case of cani

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the upper eyelid].

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare epithelial malignancy, which tends to grow slowly. ACC is an intractable neoplasm due to its ability to invade perineural spaces. Local recurrence after excision is not unusual. ACC most commonly arises in the lacrimal gland. Very rarely, ACC originates from accessory lacrimal gland tissue. Here, we present a patient with a large ACC of the central upper eyelid, which had been misdiagnosed and treated as a chalazion without histological examination. Its origin most likely is an accessory lacrimal gland.

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the eyelid.

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the eyelid that often masquerades as a chalazion, blepharitis, or blepharoconjunctivitis. Controversy exists as to the proper mode of therapy for patients with a tumor confined to the eyelid. We believe that wide local excision (5 to 6 mm of normal tissue) with frozen section analysis and eyelid reconstruction is the preferred treatment. Only 1 of 11 patients had a recurrence with this technique. No regional or distant metastasis has occurred in an average of 68 months of follow-up.

[Rescue operations of the recurrent nasal and paranasal sinus neoplasms].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the symptoms, factors relating to recurrences, the styles of the rescue operation and the reconstructive methods of the surgical defects in patients with recurrent nasal and paranasal sinus neoplasms. METHODS: Excluding the primary neoplasm, only patients with recurrent tumors and suitable for rescue operations entered the group. Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the survival probability. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients receiving rescue operations from 1993 to 2002 who met the above inclusion criteria were reviewed. The age ranged from 13 - 66 years. All the pa

Clinical, Morphologic, and Molecular Features of MAP3K8 Rearranged Spitz Neoplasms: A Retrospective Study Documenting That Bonafide Spitz Melanomas Are Rare.

Previous studies regarding the clinical behavior of Spitz neoplasms lack genomic characterization. We aim to assess our hypothesis that most MAP3K8 Spitz neoplasms are indolent despite MAP3K8 being the single most common driver of Spitz melanoma. Further, we aim to identify genomic features associated with aggressive behavior and to better characterize the morphology of these cases. We analyzed the outcomes of MAP3K8 Spitz neoplasms. We also performed a meta-analysis of the outcomes of MAP3K8 Spitz from the literature. Morphologic features were compared with other variants of Spitz using a Stu

Recurrent sebaceous gland carcinoma of eyelid previously diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma: case report.

Sebaceous gland carcinoma (SGC) of the eyelid is a highly malignant neoplasm that arises from the meibomian glands, glands of Zeis, and sebaceous glands of the skin. The characteristics of this disease are high recurrence rate, significant metastatic potential, and notable mortality rate, which are quite different from basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with the history of left lower eyelid BCC (diagnosed 9 years ago), who had left parotid lymph nodes metastases and local recurrence twice. The chief complaint during visit was a left upper eyelid swelling mass

Primary vulvar and vaginal extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor: diagnostic confirmation with CD99 immunostaining and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction.

Two cases of extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor arising in unusual, superficial sites are reported. One tumor involved the vaginal wall of a 35-year-old woman, and the other neoplasm arose in the dermis of the vulva in a 28-year-old woman. The tumors showed characteristic microscopic features of Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor with nodular monotonous proliferations of undifferentiated, small, round, hyperchromatic cells with a low mitotic index. Rare rosette-like formations were apparent only in the vulvar neoplasm. The tumors displayed intense immun

Targeted DNA Sequencing Reveals Patterns of Local Progression in the Pancreatic Remnant Following Resection of Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN) of the Pancreas.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize patterns of local progression following resection for pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) using targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS). BACKGROUND: Progression of neoplastic disease in the remnant pancreas following resection of IPMN may include development of a new IPMN or ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, it is not clear whether this progression represents recurrence of the same neoplasm or an independent second neoplasm. METHODS: Targeted-NGS on genes commonly mutated in IPMN and PDAC was performed on tumo

Postoperative recurrence of an IPMN of the pancreas with a fistula to the stomach.

We report on a case of a 74 year old man who was diagnosed with a recurrence of non-invasive carcinoma of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (non-invasive IPMN) by postoperative gastroscopy (GS). A pylorus preserving pancreatico duodenectomy for IPMN in the pancreatic head was performed. A histopathological study revealed non-invasive adenocarcinoma. At first, the local recurrence of the tumor around the superior mesenteric artery circumference was diagnosed and disappeared with gemcitabine. Later, the GS showed the elevated lesion with mucin hypersecretion in the remnant stomach. The les

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the breast: A case study.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a superficial mesenchymal neoplasm that originates from the dermal fibroblasts and tends to be locally aggressive. Although infrequent, it is one of the most common cutaneous sarcomas. It mainly affects young and middle-aged patients 20 to 50 years old. Any area of skin may be involved, but the most common sites of presentation are the trunk and extremities. DFSP of the breast is extremely rare. It classically presents as a nodular, exophytic, cutaneous mass, though initially it can manifest as a flat plague and can show persistent but slow growth for

Desmoid fibromatosis in the foot: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Desmoid fibromatosis is a rare benign neoplasm arising from musculoaponeurotic structures with the potential to infiltrate local tissues and recur locally. While the commonly affected regions are the shoulder, chest wall and back, thigh, head and neck, localization in the foot is rare and only a few cases have been reported. Deep-seated lesions of foot tend to spread along the fascia and nerve or tendon sheaths. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of a 41-year-old female with a 3 years history of a slowly enlarging painful mass in the right foot. DIAGNOSES: Desmoid fibromatosis wa

Early local recurrence of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the hypopharynx in a young adult: a case report and literature review.

Well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS), also termed atypical lipomatous tumor, is a low-grade malignant adipocytic neoplasm characterized by indolent growth, limited metastatic potential, and a propensity for local recurrence. Primary WDLPS arising in the hypopharyngeal region is exceptionally rare, particularly in young adults, and may clinically mimic benign submucosal lesions. We report the case of a 24-year-old man who presented with a one-month history of persistent foreign body sensation in the throat. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a smooth submucosal mass arising from the left hypopha

[Value of colonoscopy in tumor after-care after colorectal carcinoma].

The significance of colonoscopic follow up is discussed controversially. Colonoscopy after resection of colorectal cancer offers the possibility of direct inspection and to take biopsies for the early detection of local recurrence or additional neoplasms. In a retrospective study we examined the benefit of regular colonoscopies. Between 1/1995 and 4/1996 237 colonoscopies were performed on 164 patients after resection of colorectal cancer. The evaluation was done due to the stage of the primary tumor, the age of the patients, the time after operation and the number of previous colonoscopies. 5

Resection of a recurrent solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas after duodenal sparing pancreaticoduodenectomy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Solid Pseudopapillary Neoplasm (SPN) is a rare pancreatic neoplasm with low malignant potential and a relative indolent course. Complete resection of the SPN is curative for most cases and has a high survival rate. Recurrences, though rare, can still occur despite adequate resection. Pancreaticoduodenectomy is commonly performed to treat pancreatic head SPNs. In recent years, duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) has been reported as a less radical and acceptable alternative. CASE PRESENTATION: We are reporting a case of 26-year old female who presented with a 7

ADENOMYOEPITHELIOMA WITH CARCINOMA; EPITHELIAL-MYOEPITHELIAL CARCINOMA WITH EARLY PULMONARY METASTASIS.

Adenomyoepithelioma (AME) is a rare variant of breast neoplasm. It is a biphasic tumour characterized by small epithelial-lined spaces with inner luminal cells and outer of abluminal (myoepithelial) cells. Either - or both - of these two cells may rarely undergo malignant transformation. We present a case of a 61-year-old lady who arbored a mass in her right breast. She presented with few left sided pulmonary nodules as well and was initially diagnosed with extensive DCIS on core biopsy. Lung biopsy of nodule was diagnosed as epithelial myoepithelial neoplasm. Ultimately, modified radical mast
