Enlargement of the cheeks may be due to a multitude of disorders, congenital, neoplastic, and in particular inflammatory. Congenital facial anomalies include cutaneous (and osseous) hemihypertrophy of the face and unilateral angiomatous malformations (e.g. Sturge-Weber-Krabbe Syndrome). Buccal enlargement due to dermal tumours include localized haemangiomas and lymphangiomas, lipomas and other benign connective tissue neoplasms, generalized disorders of the lymphatic or reticuloendothelial system including mycosis fungoides, reticulum cell sarcoma and other soft tissue malignancies, and cutane

Clear Cell Sarcoma (CCS) of soft tissue is a rare and highly malignant neoplasm primarily affecting young adults, often presenting in the deep soft tissues of the extremities. Despite morphological and immunophenotypic similarities to melanoma, CCS arises from connective tissues and is characterized by a distinct genetic hallmark: the EWSR1-ATF1 fusion resulting from t(12;22)(q13;q12) translocation. This genetic signature is absent in melanoma, making molecular diagnosis essential for accurate differentiation. Additionally, recent evidence highlights the utility of PRAME as an immunohistochemi

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a morphologically heterogeneous soft tissue and bone neoplasm, producing a paraneoplastic syndrome due to phosphate wasting. These tumors produce fibroblast growth factor 23, which is implicated in renal tubule phosphate loss. Medical records of patients seen from 1999 to 2013 with osteomalacia associated or not with a tumor were reviewed. Clinical and laboratory data, radiographic studies, and follow-up of 8 patients were tabulated. Histologic features and the immunoprofile of the tumors were analyzed. There were 208 patients with osteomalacia, but only

The deposition of calcium and phosphorous salts in the soft tissues can be classified into three categories: metastatic calcification, dystrophic calcification, and calcinosis. Metastatic calcification occurs when the calcium-phosphorous levels are elevated. The calcifications involve normal tissues. Associated disease include hyperparathyroidism, neoplasms, milk-alkali syndrome, hypervitaminosis D, and tumoral calcinosis. Dystrophic calcification occurs in the presence of normal metabolism in damaged or devitalized tissues. Disorders included in this classification are: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

UNLABELLED: Colorectal cancer may arise from any kind of tissue constituting normal wall of the large intestine, however, in majority of cases, it is of epithelial origin. Endocrine, mesenchymal neoplasms and non-granulomatic lymphomas belong to rarely occurring cancers of the large intestine. Mesenchymal neoplasms may derive from muscles, nervous system, fibrous connective tissue, fat tissue and from blood and lymphatic vessels. The paper presents 3 cases of non-epithelial neoplasms of the large intestine (myosarcoma and 2 myomas). All cancers concerned women older than 50 years (mean age 64.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are mesenchymal tumors composed of histologically, immunohistochemically, ultrastructurally, and genetically distinctive cells. PEComas have been described in different organs and are considered ubiquitous tumors. In this review we discuss recent informations related to PEComas in the genitourinary tract.

A desmoid tumour, also known as aggressive fibrous tumour or desmoid fibromatosis, is a rare, benign tumour originating from connective tissue cells. Desmoid tumours account for approximately 0.03+% of all neoplasms and less than 3+% of all soft tissue tumours. The estimated incidence in the general population is 2 to 4 cases per million people per year [1]. Desmoid tumours are characterised by aggressive growth but typically do not metastasize. They often occur in young adults and preferably affect specific body regions such as the abdomen, shoulder, chest, or extremities. The exact cause of

Juxtacortical or surface tumors of bone are neoplasms arising from or just outside the cortex, and are composed of different histologic types. Although the imaging appearances of these lesions have similarities to their intramedullary counterparts, their location alters their radiographic and MR characteristics, creating difficulties in diagnosis. Meanwhile, several non-neoplastic lesions, such as stress reaction/stress fracture and indolent infectious processes, compound the differential diagnosis. Neoplastic juxtacortical lesions of bone have been classified into five categories: cartilagino

Penile myointimoma is a rare, benign tumor occurring within the corpus spongiosum vasculature of the glans penis. Thus far, there have been twenty-three reported tumors in the literature. We present four additional tumors of this unique myointimal proliferation. Patients ranged in age from 20 to 68 years and presented with a firm mass on the glans penis. All four tumors displayed distinctive morphologic features consisting of a myointimal proliferation with plexiform architecture of bland myofibroblastic cells in a myxoid background in the corpus spongiosum vasculature. Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare, benign condition characterized histologically by increased numbers of eccrine elements, as well as numerous capillary channels. In most cases, EAH arises as a single lesion; however, multiple variants have been reported. We report a 35-year-old female patient with multiple, sudoriparous, subcutaneous nodules on the right foot, which showed typical histopathological findings of EAH, and vascular components of the tumor consisted of thin-walled dilated vascular spaces intermixed with spindle cells and some histiocytoid endothelial cells representing

A Belgian shepherd dog aged 4 years and 9 months was presented with acute onset of non-weight bearing lameness and stifle effusion of the left hind limb, caused by the deep form of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma originating in the deep musculature and fascia surrounding the stifle joint. The tumour progressed rapidly in the tissues along the femoral diaphysis with marked periosteal new bone formation. Cytology of a stifle joint aspirate revealed numerous large polygonal neoplastic cells with considerable anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. These cells were present in clusters, with cytoplasmic p

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) typically occurs in the abdomen but may also present at other sites. We report six cases of paratesticular DSRCT. The patients, who ranged in age from 17 to 37 (mean, 28) years, presented with a scrotal mass (five cases) or testicular pain (one case). Grossly, the tumors were white to tan and firm. Typically, they involved the paratesticular soft tissue, serosal surfaces and the epididymis near the junction with the rete testis. Microscopically, the tumors consisted of nests of mitotically active "small blue cells" with scant cytoplasm embedded in a

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Cystic pancreatic lesions (CPL) are diagnosed with increasing frequency. Because up to 60% of CPL are classified as malignant or premalignant, every CPL should be fully investigated and clarified. Serous CPL with low risk of malignancy must be differentiated from mucinous CPL with relevant potential malignancy (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm IPMN) and mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) as well as from harmless pseudocysts.
STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: Cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial ro

We describe the clinicopathologic features of four cases of ancient hematoma occurring in the tensor fascia lata and perifascial tissue that clinically and radiologically mimicked aggressive soft tissue neoplasms. The lesions arose in three men and one woman, aged between 31 and 61 years. In three cases, an injury to the affected site had been noted 18 months, 19 years, and 20 years beforehand, respectively. At presentation, these deep-seated and enlarging lesions were highly suggestive of soft tissue sarcomas. Three lesions were treated by excision of an intramuscular or perifascial mass; in

The differential diagnosis of soft tissue swellings encompasses a variety of benign, intermediate, low-grade malignant and high-grade neoplastic lesions in addition to tumor-like reactive processes. As treatment of these heterogeneous conditions varies greatly from conservative observation and simple local excision up to extensive radical surgical resection, treatment decisions are based mainly on a precise preoperative histological diagnosis on limited biopsy material. Even for clinically unequivocal sarcomas, the importance of the preoperative histological diagnosis has been increasingly emp

AIMS: Kinase fusion-positive soft tissue tumors represent an emerging, molecularly defined group of mesenchymal tumors with a wide morphologic spectrum and diverse activating kinases. Here, we present two cases of soft tissue tumors with novel LTK fusions.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Both cases presented as acral skin nodules (big toe and middle finger) in pediatric patients (17-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy). The tumors measured 2 and 3 cm in greatest dimension. Histologically, both cases exhibited bland-looking spindle cells infiltrating adipose tissue and accompanied by collagenous stroma. One

INTRODUCTION: Osteomalacia is associated with diffuse pain and multiple fractures and therefore, diagnosis and treatment of this condition are necessary. Clinicians should be aware of an uncommon mechanism of osteomalacia where hypophosphataemia is secondary to renal phosphaturia because of the production by a mesenchymal phosphaturic tumor of FGF-23. This tumor should be localized and removed to cure this tumor-induced osteomalacia.
OBSERVATION: A 70-year-old female patient was admitted to explore diffuse pain caused by multiple fractures secondary to osteomalacia. Despite vitamin D suppleme

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT) is a rare tumour occurring in bone and soft tissue that usually behaves in a benign manner. Elaboration of biologically active substances by this tumour gives rise to a paraneoplastic syndrome known as oncogenic osteomalacia, manifesting clinically as bone pain, generalized weakness and pathological fractures. Recognition of PMTMCT and its associated syndrome is important, as resection of the tumour in most instances results in prompt resolution of symptoms. Previously reported cases of this tumour have emphasized the con

In obese patients, lymphodystrophic tissue can create large masses that are microscopically indistinguishable from chronic lymphedema. This tissue can be disabling, especially in the lower extremities. The tissue is refractory to conservative therapy and is prone to cellulitis and abscess formation. The patients are regarded as being at high risk for surgical complications due to obesity and related illnesses. We report two cases of patients with lesions severely limiting walking. The two patients weighed 490 and 520 lb, respectively. One patient had hypertension and asthma; the other had arrh

As with other parts of the musculoskeletal system, the soft tissues of the foot can be affected by a wide variety of pathologic entities including trauma, congenital abnormalities, infections, and neoplastic disorders. While plain radiographs are usually the initial examination for evaluation of pathology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is critical to evaluate for abnormalities within the ligaments, tendons, and other nonosseous structures within the foot. The constellation of clinical and MRI findings often allows a relatively specific diagnosis to be rendered. This article discusses both b
