Eighteen cases of solid fibrous tumors of the visceral pleura are studied. The series includes neoplasms of various sizes removed during the last 17 years at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Most tumors showed consistent gross and light microscopic features, such as encapsulation, preservation of pedicle, origin from visceral pleura, predominance of spindle cells with more or less hyalinized stroma, little or no pleomorphism or mitotic activity and no infiltration of the underlying lung. No sex predominance or relation to environmental pollutants was noted. Peak incidence was in the 6th decade of lif

Only 5% of pleural neoplasms are fibrous tumors of the pleura, which typically develop from sub-mesothelial mesenchymal tissue of the visceral pleura. These tumors often behave clinically benignly, and when they are larger than 15 cm or occupy more than 40% of the hemithorax, they are referred to as "giant" tumors. Surgical excision is the gold standard treatment, although intra-operative bleeding is one of the major complications. In this case report, we discuss a 39-year-old female patient with a large homogeneous enhancing mass of soft tissue density in the right lower hemithorax with syste

RATIONALE: Well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor (WDPMT) is an uncommon, slow-growing neoplasm that is often an incidental finding in the peritoneum of women of reproductive age. It can be misdiagnosed as malignant mesothelioma on routine histology, potentially leading to unnecessary aggressive therapy. The role of modern molecular techniques in resolving this diagnostic dilemma and guiding conservative management warrants emphasis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 32-year-old woman presented with vague abdominal discomfort. Imaging revealed bilateral ovarian cysts and significant pelvic free fl

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB) is a major cause of bacterial bloodstream infections (BSIs), associated with high morbidity and mortality. The risk and prognostic factors for BSIs caused by clonally transmitted A. baumannii ST2, carrying armA, blaOXA-23 and blaOXA-66, remain unclear.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 97 hospitalized patients with A. baumannii BSI (January 2019-May 2022). Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis characterized the strains. Clinical data were reviewed to identify risk factors for secondary BSIs, A. baumannii BSIs wit

Malignant mesothelioma with deciduoid features (MMWDF) is a recently characterized morphologic variant of epithelioid malignant mesothelioma, which frequently is misdiagnosed as peritoneal deciduosis or florid mesothelial hyperplasia. We report on the cytological, histological, immunohistochemical, and autopsy findings of a case of MMWDF arising in the pericardium of a 71-yr-old female patient. Cytology showed large, polygonal to round cells with pale to bright, eosinophilic cytoplasm, occasionally showing xantomatous pattern, containing a pleomorphic and vesicular nucleus with a single promin

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive neoplasm that originates from the mesothelial cells lining the parietal peritoneum or visceral peritoneum and extensively spreads within the abdominal cavity. It is a rare malignancy characterized by an insidious onset and poor prognosis. We present the case of a 79-year-old Caucasian male who experienced escalating abdominal pain for six weeks and acute abdominal distension. His medical history was significant for hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hypercholesterolemia, and prior coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)

Studies have demonstrated that many reproductive disorders can compromise the binding pattern of glycosidic residues, mainly in cows and sows. In the current study, the binding pattern of lectins was characterised and compared in normal and pathological ovaries of bitches. Fourteen biotinylated lectins (BSA-1B, Con-A, DBA, LCA, PHA-E, PHA-L, PNA, RCA-1, SBA, SJA, STA, WGA, s-WGA, UEA-1) were used. In ovaries without lesions, the predominant staining for RCA-1 was observed in the zona pellucida (ZP) of initial follicles, in the oocytes of primordial and primary follicles, and in the artery wall

INTRODUCTION: Syndromic polydactyly is often associated with an increased cancer risk. However, limited data exist regarding nonsyndromic polydactyly and its associated risk of subsequent malignancy. Therefore, our purpose was to investigate differences in rates of both malignant and benign neoplasms among pediatric patients diagnosed with nonsyndromic polydactyly compared with matched controls.
METHODS: The TriNetX US Collaborative Network database was queried using ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes to identify patients aged 10 and younger diagnosed with any form of polydactyly. Patients were then divi

Adenomatoid tumors are relatively uncommon benign neoplasms of mesothelial origin, usually occurring in the male and female genital tracts. Rare extragenital adenomatoid tumors have been identified in the adrenal glands, heart, mesentery, pleura, and lymph nodes. In the adrenal gland, adenomatoid tumors may pose a diagnostic challenge. The differential diagnosis includes adrenocortical carcinoma and metastatic carcinoma, especially signet ring cell carcinoma. Because of its glandular pattern, an adenomatoid tumor may be confused with an adenocarcinoma. We present 3 cases of adrenal adenomatoid

Tumors and tumorlike lesions that secondarily involve the mesothelial or submesothelial layers of the peritoneum are a diverse group of disorders that range in biologic behavior from benign to highly malignant. The anatomy of peritoneal ligaments and mesenteries and the normal circulation of peritoneal fluid dictate location and distribution of these diseases within the peritoneal cavity. Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the most common secondary tumor to affect the peritoneal cavity. When it arises from carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract or ovary, the prognosis is grave. However, when low-g

A solitary fibrous tumor is a neoplasm generally arising from the mesothelial surfaces of the pleura and mesothelium. In this paper, we describe three cases of rare solitary fibrous tumors arising from the orbit and discuss the management of the tumors, including diagnosis and treatment. All three cases were treated by surgical resection and showed satisfactory aesthetic and functional results. For a definitive diagnosis, immunohistochemical staining for proteins such as vimentin, CD34 and bcl-2 and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining for identifying the morphological characteristics of spind

Bladder leiomyoma is a rare benign mesothelial tumor that is more commonly reported in women. Most patients present with frequent urination or obstructive urinary symptoms. Here, we portray a 50-year-old woman who presented to the clinic with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Imaging showed a lobulated mass at the posterior aspect of the urinary bladder. The pathology of the surgery demonstrated a benign mesenchymal neoplasm composed of interlacing bundles of smooth muscle fibers with a whirling pattern, which eventually confirmed bladder leiomyoma. Although this tumor is benign, it can be

Mesothelin (MSLN) is a protein expressed in the mesothelial cell lining of the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium; its biological functions in normal cells are still unknown. Experimental studies using knockout mice have suggested that this molecule does not play an important role in development and reproduction. In contrast, it has been observed that this molecule is produced in abnormal amounts in several malignant neoplasms, such as mesotheliomas and pancreatic adenocarcinomas. Many molecular studies have also demonstrated that mesothelin is overexpressed in HSOCs. Here, we discuss the cur

The adverse pulmonary effects of asbestos are well accepted in scientific circles. However, the extrapulmonary consequences of asbestos exposure are not as clearly defined. In this review the potential for asbestos to produce diseases of the peritoneum, immune, gastrointestinal (GIT), and reproductive systems are explored as evidenced in published, peer-reviewed literature. Several hundred epidemiological, in vivo, and in vitro publications analyzing the extrapulmonary effects of asbestos were used as sources to arrive at the conclusions and to establish areas needing further study. In order t

The histological diagnosis of pleural epithelioid mesothelioma can be difficult in the case of rare variants or in the definition of neoplasm origin in patients with previous or concomitant tumours. Currently, several immunohistochemical reactions are available in the surgical pathologist's armamentarium that allow us to obtain a more sensitive and specific diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma. However, in some cases, the final interpretation remains inconclusive. Historically, ultrastructural examination has represented a useful tool for the definition of the mesothelial nature of neop

INTRODUCTION: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a malignant of mesodermal neoplasm and arises from multipotential mesothelial or subserosal cells of the pleura, pericardium and peritoneum.
CASE: A seventy five year-old male patient was admitted with chest and lower limb pain. He was a heavy smoker and exposed to environmental asbestos in his childhood. PET-CT scans showed multiple pathological FDG uptakes in lungs and other organs. Biopsies performed from lung and anterior thigh muscles were reported as epitheloid type malignant pleural mesothelioma.
DISCUSSION: We emphasize that unexp

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma is a rare tumour that arise from the mesothelial cells of the pleura and in recent time the incidence of this disease is rising. Because of the implications for management and therapy, it is important to assess the accurate staging. 18F-fluorodeoxiglucose Positron Emission Tomography (18F-FDG PET) is become a useful tool in the diagnosis of many neoplasms, such as Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma. In particular it has been shown to be useful in the evaluation of the extent of pleural disease, in the establishment of lymph node involvement, in the evaluation of tumo

BRCA-associated protein 1 (BAP1) has emerged as a promising biomarker for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Loss of BAP1 expression can occur by a variety of mechanisms, but reports on incidence are variable and the clinical significance is unclear. In order to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic significance of BAP1, we constructed a tissue microarray consisting of 111 MPM cases and performed BAP1 immunohistochemistry. BAP1 was lost in 77% of epithelioid cases (n=58) but was retained in all sarcomatoid cases (n=10); 49% of biphasic cases showed loss (n=43), and BAP1-negative cases d

Malignant mesothelioma can be difficult to distinguish from other malignancies, particularly non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs), without immunohistochemistry. However, conventional markers of mesothelial lineage all have variable degrees of cross-reactivity with other neoplasms, including NSCLCs, necessitating the use of multiple mesothelioma and carcinoma markers in every case for accurate diagnosis. A recently described monoclonal HEG homolog 1 (HEG1) antibody was proposed to be a specific marker for mesothelioma. Here we performed a large scale assessment of the SKM9-2 HEG1 antibody us

BACKGROUND: Military personnel may have potential exposures to carcinogens during their military careers. However, the generalizability of causal evidence between occupational exposures and cancer outcomes in military personnel is limited. This study aims to describe the epidemiology cause-specific cancer mortality in still serving and released Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel recruited between 1976 and 2012.
METHODS: Data came from the Canadian Forces Cancer and Mortality Study II (CF CAMS II), a record-linkage study of approximately 228,685 CAF Regular Force personnel and Reservists. S
