Soft Tissue Aneurysmal Bone Cyst in the Sartorius Muscle of a 13-Year-Old Boy Mimicking Myositis Ossificans: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: A soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst is an extremely rare tumor. The objective of the article is to present the clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of a very unusual neoplasm of soft tissues. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old male patient presented a painful, mobile, and rapidly growing mass on the posteromedial aspect of his left knee. Imaging studies revealed a mass that arose from the medial surface of the distal sartorius muscle, with extension to the subcutaneous fat tissue. It was a well-circumscribed solid tumor with a peripheral rim calcification on plain film,

Cancer cachexia.

Cancer cachexia is a complex syndrome that includes host tissue wasting, anorexia, asthenia, and abnormal host intermediary metabolism. It is present in approximately 50% of cancer patients during treatment and nearly 100% of treated cancer patients at death. Cachexia has a detrimental impact on cancer therapy. The central problem of cancer cachexia is that energy balance is not maintained, and the host has a relative hypophagia which results in host tissue wasting. The tumor by its nature and obligate growth can continue to consume glucose, amino acids, and lipids at the expense of the host.

Induction of nitric oxide synthase in colonic smooth muscle from patients with toxic megacolon.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Colonic inflammation may lead to motility disturbances, including severe atony. Nitric oxide is released by inflamed tissue and induces smooth muscle relaxation. The aim of this study was to analyze NO generation pathways in colonic tissue from patients who had ulcerative colitis with or without toxic megacolon and in tumor-free samples from patients with colonic neoplasm. METHODS: Enzymatic activity was determined by transformation of [14C]arginine to [14C]citrulline in mucosa and muscular layer samples. Immunostaining of tissue sections with antibody against inducible NO

Benign mesenchymoma of the mediastinum: a case report.

Benign mesenchymoma is an uncommon tumor containing at least two or more differentiated mesenchymal elements in addition to fibrous tissue. The case we presented here is a 60-year-old male who suffered from a superior posterior mediastinal mesenchymal tumor composed predominantly of mature adipose tissue separated by fascicular bundles of spindle cells admixed with cartilage and osseous tissue. The spindle cells were confirmed to be smooth muscle in nature by trichrome Masson stain and immunohistochemical studies, providing a picture consistent with that of benign mesenchymoma. Complete remova

Primary intracranial intraventricular leiomyoma: a literature review.

Leiomyomas, benign tumors of well-differentiated smooth muscle and vascular collagenous tissue, usually occur in the uterus but can develop wherever smooth muscle is present. Primary intracranial leiomyomas are rare tumors. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with a primary intraventricular leiomyoma. She consulted us for headache, dizziness, and black spots in her vision. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) disclosed a mass rooted in the posterior septum pellucidum. The tumor was totally excised by the senior author with no residual seen on intraoperative MRI. Pathological examination show

Angiogenic polypoid proliferation adjacent to ileal carcinoid tumors: a nonspecific finding related to mucosal prolapse.

Case reports have highlighted angiogenic polypoid proliferation in the mucosa adjacent to ileal carcinoid tumors, describing them as granulation tissue polyposis and florid angiogenesis. Some authors have proposed that the ileal carcinoid tumors themselves produce growth factors that cause the change. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of angiogenic polypoid proliferation in a large cohort of resected ileal carcinoid tumors compared with control groups. Search of the Cleveland Clinic and Summa Health System pathology files (1985 to 1999) yielded 65 resected ileal carcinoi

Cavernous hemangioma--uncommon presentation in zygomatic bone.

Hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms characterized by an abnormal proliferation of blood vessels. They may occur in any vascularized tissue including skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and bone. Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all osseous tumors. The most frequent sites are the calvaria and the vertebral column. Involvement of the facial bones is rare and occurs most commonly in the maxilla, mandible, and nasal bones. In literature, only 20 cases of zygomatic involvement have been reported. We report a case of an intraosseous hemangioma of the zygoma wi

Complete resection of a large phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour by chest wall resection and reconstruction.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour is an extremely rare mesenchymal neoplasm of bone or soft tissue. It is associated with paraneoplastic oncogenic osteomalacia through secretion of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) which inhibits renal proximal tubule phosphate re-uptake. We report a case of a 36-year-old woman with a large chest wall tumour completely excised by extensive chest wall resection and reconstruction with polypropylene mesh-methylmethacrylate composite and pedicled muscle flaps.

Soft-tissue perineurioma in a 20-year-old patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1): report of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Perineurioma is a rare benign soft-tissue tumor composed of cells showing differentiation toward the perineurial cells of the nerve sheath. Although mutations in the neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) gene have been documented in this tumor, there is no known association between perineuriomas and type 1 or 2 NF. METHODS: This is the first report of a case of soft-tissue perineurioma occurring in a patient with NF1. RESULTS: Histopathologic examination revealed a 2.0-cm well-circumscribed, spindle-cell neoplasm with slender, elongated, bipolar, wavy cytoplasmic processes and wavy, elongate

Granular cell tumor of the biliary tree. A report of two cases and a review of the literature.

Granular cell tumors are relatively uncommon soft tissue tumors usually presenting in the skin and subcutaneous tissues or tongue, although many sites have been described. Two cases arising in the extrahepatic biliary tree are described, and the previously reported cases of this rare presentation are reviewed. These tumors may mimic sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma clinically, and occasionally histologically, in this relatively young group of patients. The histogenesis appears to be related to Schwann cells as in granular cell tumors of other sites, evidenced by histologic, immuno

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF THE LESIONS ASSOCIATED WITH IRON STORAGE DISEASE IN CAPTIVE EGYPTIAN FRUIT BATS (ROUSETTUS AEGYPTIACUS).

Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) are one of many species within zoologic collections that frequently develop iron storage disease. The goals of this retrospective multi-institutional study were to determine the tissue distribution of iron storage in captive adult Egyptian fruit bats and the incidence of intercurrent neoplasia and infection, which may be directly or indirectly related to iron overload. Tissue sections from 83 adult Egyptian fruit bats were histologically evaluated by using tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, trichrome, and Prussian blue techniques. Th

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours: an immunohistochemical study of 165 cases.

The phenotype of 165 gastrointestinal stromal tumours was studied by immunohistochemistry. In each case the phenotype was compared to the histological diagnosis. The phenotype was muscle in 49 tumours (30%), neural in 18 (11%), histiocytic in 20 (12%) and mixed in five (3%); 68 tumours (41%) were positive for vimentin only, four tumours had no markers and one tumour was positive for keratin only. Histologically, the tumours were classified as smooth muscle, probably smooth muscle, probably nerve sheath tumours or tumours of undetermined differentiation. In 30 histologically unequivocal muscle

Medial rectus muscle myositis as an atypical presentation of mucosa-associated lymphatic tissue lymphoma: a case report.

Here we describe the rare case of a 55-year-old man with medial rectus muscle myositis as an atypical presentation of non-Hodgkin B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoma (MALT). Pathology and immunohistochemistry of the affected muscle confirmed the diagnosis of a neoplasm. The primary etiology of orbital myositis is Graves' ophthalmopathy, but several other diseases may cause this clinical presentation. Therefore, the neoplastic causes must be eliminated from the differential diagnoses. non-Hodgkin B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoma is the most common histological type of lymphoma in the orbit, with
