Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Multinodular and vacuolated neuronal tumor (MVNT) is a benign neuronal tumor that is newly recognized as architectural appearance that may be related to ganglion cell tumors in 2016 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. Herein, we report a case of MVNT in a 60-year-old man with a thorough literature review. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old male was pointed out the presence of intracerebral neoplasm located in left frontal lobe by a comprehensive medical examination. We suspected dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors and proposed him to

SURGICAL AND SEIZURE TREATMENT OUTCOMES IN ADULT DYSEMBRYOPLASTIC NEUROEPITHELIAL TUMORS: A CASE SERIES.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are benign neoplasms classified in the category of glioneuronal tumors. The estimated incidence of DNETs is 0.03 per 100,000 person per year with the age peak in a range between 10 and 14 years, and decreasing dramatically with increasing age. They are seldom diagnosed in persons above 20 years of age, being a cause of tumor-related intractable epilepsy that begins in childhood or adolescence. They have been proven to be the second most common type of epileptogenic tumors in pediatric population. These rare tumors cause chronic drug-resistant par

Virchow-Robin spaces at MR imaging.

Virchow-Robin (VR) spaces surround the walls of vessels as they course from the subarachnoid space through the brain parenchyma. Small VR spaces appear in all age groups. With advancing age, VR spaces are found with increasing frequency and larger apparent sizes. At visual analysis, the signal intensity of VR spaces is identical to that of cerebrospinal fluid with all magnetic resonance imaging sequences. Dilated VR spaces typically occur in three characteristic locations: Type I VR spaces appear along the lenticulostriate arteries entering the basal ganglia through the anterior perforated sub

Nuclear CRX and FOXJ1 Expression Differentiates Non-Germ Cell Pineal Region Tumors and Supports the Ependymal Differentiation of Papillary Tumor of the Pineal Region.

Papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) is a neuroepithelial neoplasm first described in 2003. Despite the anatomic association of PTPR with the pineal gland, the features of these tumors resemble those of the ependymal circumventricular subcommissural organ (SCO) of the posterior third ventricle. Given the presumed distinct derivation of PTPR and pineal parenchymal tumors, we hypothesized that expression of lineage-specific transcription factors could distinguish these tumors and provide additional insight into the differentiation of PTPR. A broad series of pineal region samples was revie

Skin glomic tumors referred for local pain and cured by surgical removal.

BACKGROUND: Under the definition "glomus tumors" are often erroneously enclosed neoplasms that are absolutely unlike for origin, location, and behavior. Glomus tumors (GTs) are small but extremely painful skin tumors of mesenchymal origin. GTs derive from the neuromyoarterial glomus in adults of middle-age and are generally benign. Due to their small size, diagnosis is often difficult and patients harboring these tumors usually consult many physicians, including sometimes neurosurgeons. More familiar to neurosurgeons are neoplasms as glomus jugular, glomus vagale, and glomus tympanicum that in

Papillary glioneuronal tumor.

Tumors of mixed glioneuronal type are well recognized in the central nervous system. The most common examples of these lesions include gangliogliomas and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors. Recently, unusual examples of these lesions have been described, including the papillary glioneuronal tumor. This report describes a histologically similar-appearing lesion arising in the left parieto-occipital lobe of an 18-year-old man who presented with headaches and difficulties with vision. Imaging studies noted a large cystic neoplasm marked by a peripheral rim of enhancement. The patient underwe

Septal dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor: a comprehensive clinical, imaging, histopathologic, and molecular analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are uncommon neural tumors presenting most often in children and young adults and associated with intractable seizures. Rare midline neoplasms with similar histological features to those found in DNETs have been described near the septum pellucidum and termed "DNET-like neoplasms of the septum pellucidum." Due to their rarity, these tumors have been described in just a few reports and their genetic alterations sought only in small series. METHODS: We collected 20 of these tumors for a comprehensive study of their clinical, radiologic

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor located in pericallosal and intraventricular area in a child. Case report.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are frequently seen in children and young adults with intractable epilepsy, and are typically located in the temporal cortex. Extracortical location of DNET is a very rare occurrence. The authors report on a child with a unique extracortical location of DNET with an extensive involvement to the supracallosal cistern and callosum, septum pellucidum, and lateral ventricle ependyma. The authors discuss the radiological and pathological characteristics of the lesion and reiterate the difficulty in differentiating the histological characteristics of c

Immunohistochemical expression of glypican-3 in pediatric tumors: an analysis of 414 cases.

Glypican-3 (GPC3) is a proteoglycan thought to play an important role during development. Germline GPC3 mutations are seen in the rare Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome (SGBS), which predisposes patients to Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma, and neuroblastoma. While numerous adult tumors have been evaluated by immunohistochemistry for GPC3, no comprehensive assessment has been done in pediatric tumors. We therefore investigated GPC3 expression in 143 pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors and 271 non-CNS tumors. Among non-CNS tumors, GPC3 expression was seen in 9/9 (100%) hepatoblastomas, 4/6 (6

Transcriptomic profiling of nonneoplastic cortical tissues reveals epileptogenic mechanisms in dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors.

Low-grade dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) are a frequent cause of drug-refractory epilepsy. Molecular mechanisms underlying seizure generation in these tumors are poorly understood. This study was conducted to identify altered genes in nonneoplastic epileptogenic cortical tissues (ECTs) resected from DNT patients during electrocorticography (ECoG)-guided surgery. RNA sequencing (RNAseq) was used to determine the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in these high-spiking ECTs compared to non-epileptic controls. A total of 477 DEGs (180 upregulated; 297 downregulated) were observ

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor: A review of diagnosis and management with an illustrative case.

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumors (DLGNTs) are a rare indolent neoplasm described in the 2016 WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). We describe a case of an 11 year old boy who initially presented intermittent headache, low back pain and communicating hydrocephalus, misdiagnosed as having tuberculous meningitis. Further clinical deterioration with seizures was observed and follow-up MRI showed further aggravation of leptomeningeal enhancement in the basal cisterns. Biopsy of the brain and leptomeninges revealed a diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor. D

[Primary leptomeningeal gliomatosis treated with temozolomide: a case report].

A 35-year-old man was admitted to our department for loss of consciousness. CT and MRI revealed diffuse enhancement of the subarachnoid space surrounding the brainstem and the cerebellar sulci, without any parenchymal lesions in the brain or the spinal cord. Furthermore, gadolinium-enhanced MRI revealed a nodular lesion with heterogeneous enhancement in the right prepontine cistern, at the site from which a biopsy was obtained via right lateral suboccipital craniotomy on the day following admission. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed glioblastoma multiforme. Based

Gliomatosis cerebri (GC) or GC-like? A picture to be reconsidered in neuro-oncology based on large retrospective analysis of GC series.

INTRODUCTION: Gliomatosis cerebri (GC), defined until 2016 as a distinct astrocytic glioma entity, has been removed from the 2016 World Health Organization classification of tumors of the central nervous system. However, its identity is still debated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively present 122 patients, including a subgroup with histology confirmation (n = 75, cohort b). RESULTS: Radiological features showed extension limited to 3 lobes in 31%; bilateral, midline, and basal ganglia and subtentorial involvement in 95%, 52%, 84%, and 60%, respectively; and contrast enhancement in 59

Obstructive hydrocephalus due to a third ventricular neuroepithelial cyst.

Cysts occupying the third ventricle are rare lesions and may appear as an unusual cause of obstructive hydrocephalus. Various types of lesions occur in this location, and they generally have an arachnoidal, endodermal, or neuroepithelial origin. The authors present a case of acute hydrocephalus following minor trauma in a child due to cerebrospinal fluid outflow obstruction by a third ventricular cyst. Definitive diagnosis of this cystic lesion was possible only with contrast ventriculography and not routine computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. The investigation, treatment, and p

Tectal region papillary neuroglial tumour: a case report.

Papillary glioneuronal tumor (PGNT) is a rare central nervous system neoplasm. Of reported cases, the vast majority are located in the frontal and temporal lobes. We present the case of a 39-year-old male who presented with a one day history of gait disturbance following chemotherapy treatment for metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma. Following MRI of the head showed a tectal mass. Following an occipital interhemispheric craniotomy for tumor resection, final pathology was diagnostic of a papillary neuroglial tumor, WHO grade I. To the best or out knowledge this is the only report of it arising fro

Multifocal dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours associated with refractory epilepsy.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours (DNET) are a common cause of tumour-associated epilepsy, and are usually located in the temporal lobes. We present a case of multifocal DNETs in both infra- and supra-tentorial locations, in a 23-year-old man with a coincident Type I Chiari malformation, presenting with medically refractory focal seizures. The extensive anatomical distribution of the lesions suggests a genetic component in their tumourigenesis.

DNA methylation array analysis for diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor with conspicuous hypothalamic mass. A case report.

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT) is a rare glioneuronal neoplasm newly included in the 2016 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. Owing to the wide spectrum of its histopathological and radiological features, accurate diagnosis can be challenging. Recently, molecular testing including DNA methylation array has been introduced with the possibility of improving diagnostic accuracy and contributing to the subtyping especially for brain tumors with ambiguous histology. Two molecularly distinct subtypes of DLGNT have been reported: methyl

Infratentorial dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) associated with Arnold-Chiari malformation.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT), a benign neoplasm, is now a well recognized clinicopathological entity. We report the second case of DNT in the cerebellum occurring in a 20-year-old male presenting with ataxia. He also had Arnold-Chiari malformation of the adult type. Histologically the tumor was a "simple" DNT having the specific "glioneuronal" element, namely oligodendrocyte-like cells (OLCs), mucoid change and floating neurons (Purkinje cells). A striking feature was the perpendicular arrangement of the neuropil columns extending from the pial surface to white matter similar t
