Solitary Extramedullary Plasmacytoma of the Orbital Apex and Dura Masquerading as Idiopathic Inflammation.

This is a retrospective case description of a single female patient found to have a primary solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the orbital apex and temporal/parietal dura. These monoclonal plasma cell neoplasms account for fewer than 5% of plasma cell neoplasms. Although most commonly found in the head and neck, orbital and dural solitary extramedullary plasmacytomas are extremely uncommon. The authors present a case of an extramedullary plasmacytoma involving both of these structures in a middle-age otherwise healthy female to highlight this rare entity and elucidate current treatment mo

The morphology, immunohistochemistry, and incidence of hematopoietic neoplasms in mice and rats.

Hematopoietic neoplasms in the rodent may be classified into lymphoid or nonlymphoid neoplasms. Lymphoid neoplasms include the following morphologic types: follicular center cell, lymphoblast (lymphocytic), immunoblast, plasma cell, and large granular lymphocyte (LGL). Nonlymphoid hematopoietic neoplasms include histiocytic sarcoma, granulocytic leukemia, erythroid leukemia, and mast cell tumors. Most types of hematopoietic neoplasms, exclusive of LGL lymphoma (leukemia), are more common in mice than in rats. Specific strains of mice have a hematopoietic tumor incidence of more than 50% in age

Crystal-storing histiocytosis and associated marginal zone lymphoma with extensive plasmacytic differentiation.

Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH) is a non-neoplastic histiocytic proliferation that results from the intra-lysosomal accumulation of immunoglobulins as crystals. CSH is frequently associated with various B-cell lymphomas or plasma cell neoplasms. CSH can potentially obscure underlying lymphoproliferative neoplasms. This association should always be considered and the tissue should be carefully evaluated.

2016 US lymphoid malignancy statistics by World Health Organization subtypes.

Collectively, lymphoid neoplasms are the fourth most common cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The authors provide contemporary lymphoid neoplasm statistics by subtype based on the 2008 World Health Organization classifications, including the most current US incidence and survival data. Presented for the first time are estimates of the total numbers of US lymphoid neoplasm cases by subtype as well as a detailed evaluation of incidence and survival statistics. In 2016, 136,960 new lymphoid neoplasms are expected. Overall lymphoma incidence rates have declin

Fine-needle Aspiration Cytology to Identify a Rare Mimicker of Breast Cancer: Plasma Cell Mastitis.

There are rare benign diseases that can mimic malignant breast neoplasms in the clinical exam and in mammography. We evaluated the contribution of an accessible procedure to most clinicians, the fine-needle aspiration cytology, to identify a rare mimicker of malignant breast neoplasms. A type 2 diabetic 85-year-old female presented with a 6-month history of a left breast lump. The physical exam and mammography were compatible with breast cancer. Nevertheless, after fine-needle aspiration cytology, the diagnosis was plasma cell mastitis. Once this rare diagnosis was established, the tumor was e

Expression of the activating receptor, NKp46 (CD335), in human natural killer and T-cell neoplasia.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the expression of CD335 (NKp46), an activation receptor that is selectively expressed on natural killer (NK) cells. METHODS: We assessed CD335's potential utility as a diagnostic marker in 657 cases by flow cytometry and 410 cases by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: We observed that CD335 was highly specific for NK cells in nonneoplastic tissues. Moreover, 61 (90%) of 68 of NK cell neoplasms demonstrated CD335 expression, whereas B-cell, myelomonocytic, and plasma cell neoplasms lacked expression. Notably, 16 (20%) of 82 mature T-cell neoplasms, particularly T-cell larg

A case of transient monoclonal plasma cell aberrancy following respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination.

Plasma cell neoplasms include a spectrum of disorders ranging from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance to multiple myeloma, defined by clonal plasma cell proliferation and production of monoclonal immunoglobulins. However, transient monoclonal plasma cell expansions without neoplastic features are rarely documented. Herein, we report a 77-year-old female patient with a history of stage IVa high-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary who was found to have leukocytosis and 22% circulating monoclonal plasma cells during routine preoperative testing, 4 days after receiving the RSV vacc

The application of monoclonal antibodies to the characterization and diagnosis of lymphoid neoplasms: a review of recent studies.

Twenty-three T-cell neoplasms were divided, according to their reactivity with the OKT monoclonal antibodies as follows: Fourteen neoplasms of diverse histopathology expressed the OKT3+ OKT4+ phenotype, commonly associated with the helper T-cell subset; seven histologically similar lymphoblastic neoplasms expressed diverse phenotypes consistent with various stages of intrathymic differentiation and two neoplasms expressed the uncommon OKT3+ OKT10+ phenotype. Thus, T-cell neoplasms are divisible into phenotypes that correspond to normal stages of T-cell differentiation and functionally distinct

Extraosseous plasmacytoma with an aggressive course occurring solely in the CNS.

Extraosseous (extramedullary) plasmacytoma is a relatively indolent neoplasm that constitutes 3-5% of all plasma cell neoplasms. Rare cases have been reported to truly occur in the CNS and not as an extension from a nasal lesion. EBV expression in plasma cell neoplasms has been reported in very few cases that are mainly post-transplant or occurring in severely immunosuppressed patients. We report a case of extraosseous plasmacytoma with an aggressive course in an HIV-positive individual that occurred solely in the CNS, showing EBV expression by in situ hybridization, and presenting as an intra

Immunophenotypic profile of plasma cell leukemia: a retrospective study in a reference cancer center in India and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is a rare but aggressive subtype of plasma cell dyscrasia. It is known to present with highly variable morphological features and may mimic with other lymphoid neoplasms. Multicolor flow cytometry (MFC) with availability of newer markers is highly useful in the diagnosis of the plasma cell leukemia. We present an immunophenotypic profile in ten cases of PCL along with their clinical and laboratory findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied immunophenotypic profile of 10 cases of plasma cell leukemia (out of 4615 cases of hematolymphoid n

[Plasma-cell granuloma of the sigmoid colon concomitant with adenocarcinoma of the cecum. Viewpoint for debate, literature review on pseudotumors, idiopathic colitis and cancer].

A case of colonic pseudotumor, causing intestinal occlusion, concomitant with a caecum neoplasia is reported. A male 69 years old was referred to our Institution for colic abdominal pain: colonoscopy aborted because of an insuperable sigma stenosis; diagnostic enema confirmed the sigmoid stenosis, originally advised as neoplastic. As operation, the sigmoid tumor appeared accompanied with enlarged draining lymph nodes and peritoneal sac was disseminated of miliary-like whity granules. Hystological examination showed a plasma-cell granuloma with nodular and peritoneal chronic inflammatory reacti

Extramedullary plasmacytoma in the carotid space: Expanding the differential diagnosis.

Plasma cell neoplasms have been classified into various types, with a range of clinical and radiological presentations. Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a subset of plasma cell neoplasms which presents as an isolated non-osseous soft tissue mass. Though carotid space neoplasms are commonly encountered, EMP in the carotid space is rare and seldom considered in the initial differential diagnosis of a carotid space mass. These tumors can be treated by surgery or radiotherapy. On the other hand, the commonly encountered tumors in the carotid space are treated surgically. Also, it is mandatory

An unusual presentation of multiple myeloma with unilateral sudden vision loss: A case report.

RATIONALE: Plasma cell neoplasms are categorized by neoplastic proliferation of a single clone of plasma cells which produce a monoclonal immunoglobulin. Plasma cell neoplasms can present as a solitary plasmacytoma or as multiple myeloma. Both of them can progress to multiple myeloma. Once a diagnosis of plasmacytoma has been made, thorough examinations should be carried out for identifying the disease entity. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: Herein, we describe an extraordinary rare case of multiple myeloma with initial presentation of a left sphenoid neoplasm resulting in left-sided headache

Using cell-free RNA to identify B- and T-cell clonality for diagnosis and monitoring of B- and T-cell neoplasms.

Cell-free RNA (cfRNA) is emerging as a supplemental approach for liquid biopsy (LBx). Given that lymphoid cells and plasma cells express substantial quantities of immunoglobulin (Ig) and T-cell receptor (TCR) RNA, we investigated the utility of using cfRNA for detecting B-cell and T-cell clonality in LBxs. Using next-generation sequencing (NGS) of cfRNA, we clonotyped Igs and TCRs in LBx samples from patients with B-cell neoplasm, T-cell neoplasm, myeloid neoplasm and solid tumors alongside cancer-free individuals. To establish a clonality cutoff, we clonotyped tissue RNA from patients with co

Case report: gastric plasmacytoma resistant to radiation therapy.

Plasma cell neoplasms are a group of diseases involving the malignant proliferation of plasma cells. One common type of plasma cell neoplasm is multiple myeloma, which typically occurs diffusely in the bone marrow. It can manifest with a variety of presentations, including bone pain, fractures, anemia, infection, hypercalcemia, and renal failure. A less common type of plasma cell neoplasm is the solitary plasmacytoma, which is a local proliferation of plasma cells in the bone or extramedullary tissues. They rarely recur after local radiation therapy. An 83-year-old woman was noted on routine la

Interphase FISH in plasma cell dyscrasia: increase in abnormality detection with plasma cell enrichment.

Historically, cytogenetic studies of plasma cell neoplasms have been hampered by the fact that terminally differentiated plasma cells do not proliferate well in vitro. Although the use of interphase FISH (iFISH) has greatly improved the ability to detect cytogenetic abnormalities, cases with low numbers of neoplastic cells often do not demonstrate abnormalities. Using a four-assay, nine-probe iFISH panel, we compared the abnormality detection rate for overnight unstimulated bone marrow cultures (ONC) to that for plasma-cell enriched fractions obtained with use of CD138-coated immunomagnetic be

Immunohistochemical studies of beta-hexosaminidase in neoplastic and normal tissues with monoclonal antibodies.

A total of 87 human specimens with 10 histological types of primary neoplasm were studied immunohistochemically with monoclonal antibodies specific for beta-hexosaminidase (Hex). High levels of Hex were found in malignant neoplasms of the skin, cervix, colorectum and in benign as well as neoplastic plasma cells, while no activity was detected in normal epidermis, normal colorectal epithelium or benign naevi. The strongest immunohistochemical reaction was revealed in tumor cells of malignant melanoma. Adenomas and adenocarcinomas of the colorectum showed high levels of Hex with a basal pattern

Plasma Cell Leukemia With Spindle-Cell Morphology and CD22 Positivity on Flow Cytometry.

Plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is a rare and aggressive form of plasma cell neoplasm, defined by the presence of 5% or more circulating plasma cells in peripheral blood in patients diagnosed with plasma cell myeloma. The spindle-cell morphology in PCL is an exceptionally rare feature, adding diagnostic complexity. This case involves a 56-year-old female with PCL, showing elongated spindle-shaped plasma cells in the peripheral blood smear. Bone marrow aspirate and core biopsy confirmed the spindle morphology and extensive atypical plasma cell infiltration, with minimal trilineage hematopoiesis. Flo
