Experiential Avoidance and Rumination in Parents of Children on Cancer Treatment: Relationships with Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Symptoms of Depression.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey study to investigate whether there is a relationship between experiential avoidance (EA), rumination, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and symptoms of depression, in parents of children on cancer treatment. Data from 79 parents (55 mothers) of 79 children with a median of three months since their cancer diagnosis were included in cross-sectional analyses. EA and rumination were positively correlated with PTSS and symptoms of depression. EA and rumination did not provide incremental explained variance in PTSS over and above that explained by symptoms

The psychological impact of COVID-19 pandemic on patients with neuroendocrine tumors: Between resilience and vulnerability.

The COVID-19 pandemic has added another layer of complexity to the fears of patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Little is known regarding the psychological impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on patients with gastroenteropancreatic or bronchopulmonary (BP) NETs. We longitudinally surveyed the mental symptoms and concerns of NET patients during the plateau phase of the first (W1) and second epidemic waves (W2) in Italy. Seven specific constructs (depression, anxiety, stress, health-related quality of life, NET-related quality of life, patient-physician relationship, psychological distress)

Experience in the diagnosis of headaches that start in elderly people.

The diagnoses of the 193 patients aged 65 and over who attended the service of neurology in the past 15 years with de novo headache as their initial and main symptom were specifically analysed. Headaches beginning in elderly people represented only 5.4% of headaches in all ages, whereas 12.1% of the population in this health area was 65 or over. Head pain appeared more often in women (63%), although post-traumatic, cluster, and benign cough headaches were almost restricted to men. Tension type headache (83 patients, 43% of the aged patients) and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (36, 19%) were t

CT observation of rib abnormalities: spectrum of findings.

The CT studies in 63 patients in which rib abnormality was identified or excluded were retrospectively analyzed. The CT features were detailed and correlated with other available radiographic findings as well as clinical data. Contiguous spread of tumor to rib or metastasis to rib characteristically showed subtle or complete segmental lytic rib destruction. An accompanying extrapleural soft tissue mass was frequently seen with metastatic disease and myeloma. In nine patients CT showed rib destruction that had been obscured on chest radiography by heart, diaphragm, mass, or pleural effusion. Ot

Predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder following cancer.

This study investigated the predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a diagnosis of cancer. Individuals who were recently diagnosed with 1st onset head and neck or lung malignancy (N = 82) were assessed within 1 month of diagnosis for acute stress disorder (ASD) and other psychological responses including depression; individuals were reassessed (N = 63) for PTSD 6 months following their cancer diagnosis. At the initial assessment ASD was diagnosed in 28% of participants, and 22% met criteria for PTSD at 6-months follow-up. Peritraumatic dissociative symptoms at the time of

Post-traumatic stress disorder impairs CD8+ T cell-dependent anti-tumor immune responses by downregulating thiamine.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe and chronic psychiatric condition. However, whether PTSD influences tumor immunity remains poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that PTSD promotes the growth of subcutaneous transplant tumors in mice, an effect that can be reversed by anti-CD8 antibody treatment. Furthermore, we found that PTSD downregulates serum thiamine levels, which mediates the tumor-promoting effects observed in PTSD mice. In vitro, thiamine enhances CD8+ T cell activation and cytotoxic function. Mechanistically, thiamine augments tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cyc

A longitudinal investigation of posttraumatic growth and its associated factors among head and neck cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic growth (PTG) may improve well-being among cancer survivors, but a longitudinal study addressing head and neck cancer (HNC) is lacking. This longitudinal study examined PTG trends and determined the associations of physical symptoms and complications, as well as sociodemographic and tumor characteristics on PTG over time among HNC survivors. METHODS: Participants completed the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer's "Quality of Life Questionnaire-Head and Neck 35" module (EORTC-QLQ-H&N-35) and "Posttraumatic Growth Inventory-Short Form" (PTGI-SF) d

Changes in cerebellar functional connectivity and autonomic regulation in cancer patients treated with the Neuro Emotional Technique for traumatic stress symptoms.

PURPOSE: A growing number of research studies have implicated the cerebellum in emotional processing and regulation, especially with regard to negative emotional memories. However, there currently are no studies showing functional changes in the cerebellum as a result of treatment for traumatic stress symptoms. The Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is an intervention designed to help improve symptoms related to traumatic stress using an integrative approach that combines emotional, cognitive, and motor processing, with a particular focus on autonomic nervous system regulation. In this study, we

Stress and Response to Treatment: Insights From a Pilot Study Using a 4-week Contemplative Self-Healing Meditation Intervention for Posttraumatic Stress in Breast Cancer.

Along with symptoms of anxiety and depression, many breast cancer survivors experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that may worsen in the setting of other stressful life events. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate whether a 4-week version of our Contemplative Self-Healing program would have different effects in reducing PTSD symptoms between breast cancer survivors with or without chronic stress at baseline. PTSD symptoms were measured using the Impact of Events scale (IES). A linear mixed model analysis was used to evaluate within patients changes in IES score. Re

Delayed Diagnosis of TSH-Secreting Adenoma Attributed to Worsening Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in a Military Veteran Because of Provider Anchoring Bias.

INTRODUCTION: Anchoring bias occurs when clinicians hold on to previously known information about a patient, with failure to consider the full realm of possibilities to explain new findings. We present a case of delayed diagnosis of thyroid-stimulating-hormone-secreting pituitary adenoma (TSHoma), a rare disorder, in a military veteran whose symptoms were misconstrued as being caused from worsening of his prior diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anchoring bias in this case led to 2-year delay in the correct diagnosis. METHODS: The clinical, laboratory, radiologic, and patholo

Post-traumatic stress disorder, resilience and cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer: A moderated network analysis.

PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and debilitating symptom among breast cancer survivors, often co-occurring with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Psychological resilience may attenuate this association, but the mechanisms and symptom-level dynamics remain unclear. METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis of 285 breast cancer survivors, validated self-report measures of PTSD symptoms, resilience, and CRF were completed. We applied moderated network analysis to map item-level interrelations, followed by Johnson-Neyman probing of significant moderation pathways. Finally,

Cognitive Mechanisms Explaining the Relationship Between Post-Traumatic Stress and Post-Traumatic Growth in Survivors of Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The ability to derive growth from a traumatic event, such as a cancer diagnosis, can facilitate effective adaptation to the challenges associated with cancer survivorship. OBJECTIVE: In two studies, we investigated the possible cognitive mechanisms explaining the relationship between post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth in female survivors of breast cancer. Specifically, Study 1 examined the role of interpretation bias, and Study 2 examined the role of cognitive restructuring of trauma. METHODS: In Study 1, 113 participants completed questionnaires assessing stress- an

Prevalence of trauma history and symptoms in patients who have received vaginal brachytherapy as part of their endometrial cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal brachytherapy (VBT) is an essential component of curative intent treatment for many patients with endometrial cancer. The prevalence of trauma history in this population is unknown and important to understand considering VBT requires patients to have an instrument vaginally inserted while in the vulnerable lithotomy position. We aim to identify patients treated with intracavitary VBT and collect survey data to assess trauma endpoints. METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with endometrial cancer who underwent intracavitary VBT at our institution between 01/2017 an

Psychosocial factors related to posttraumatic growth in breast cancer survivors: a review.

In this article, we reviewed quantitative studies regarding psychosocial factors associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG) in patients with breast cancer to elucidate our understanding of a model of PTG process. PsycInfo, Embase, Medline, Web of Knowledge were used for the search. Only quantitative, English written studies that used the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) measure administered to breast cancer patients were included. The initial search yielded 90 publications. Of those, 22 studies satisfied inclusion criteria and formed the basis of the review. Personality traits (e.g., opti
