Managed care of cephalopods can be complicated by numerous factors including infectious and non-infectious disease, environmental stressors, and anatomic and physiological changes associated with senescence. The current report describes a unique case of nephrolithiasis in a senescent, >2 yr old female Pacific octopus Enteroctopus dofleini housed in a public aquarium. Clinical signs included generalized external pallor, inappetence progressing to anorexia, lethargy, and a slow healing mantle abrasion over a period of a year. Due to the animal's declining condition, humane euthanasia was elected

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between perirenal fat volume, which is one of the visceral fat measurements, and kidney stones.
METHODS: 169 patients admitted to our clinic between January 2018 and May 2021 were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups as Control Group and Unilateral Kidney Stone Group (88 patients with unilateral kidney stones). Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography scans were used to measure perirenal fat volume and the results were transferred to workstations. The total perirenal fat volumes in the bilateral kidneys of patients were compa

BACKGROUND: Nephrolithiasis is a classic indication for parathyroidectomy in primary hyperparathyroidism patients; however, the effects of parathyroidectomy on nephrolithiasis recurrence are not well studied. The aim was to determine effect of parathyroidectomy on time to first nephrolithiasis recurrence and recurrence rate per patient-years.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism and at least one episode of nephrolithiasis was performed. The patients were divided into observation, presurgery, and postsurgery groups. Endpoints were time to

Nephrolithiasis is a common urological disease and could be secondary to primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). PHPT is traditionally characterised with hypercalcaemia. Recently, a normocalcemic PHPT has been officially recognised at the International Workshops. Regarding this new phenotype, nephrolithiasis is frequently found in studies that evaluate low bone mass. However, until now, no study on aetiology of nephrolithiasis considered normocalcemic PHPT. Hypercalciuria related to PHPT is considered as an important risk factor of stone formation in hypercalcemic PHPT, but the precise relationshi

CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates an association between sialolithiasis and nephrolithiasis. The results call for more awareness of this association among physicians and patients with nephrolithiasis.
OBJECTIVE: Very few empirical studies have been conducted to explore the potential association between sialolithiasis and nephrolithiasis. As such, the association between sialolithiasis and nephrolithiasis still remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the possible association between sialolithiasis and nephrolithiasis using a population-based dataset.
METHODS: Using data from the Taiwa

Pyonephrosis is an uncommon disease that is associated with suppurative destruction of the renal parenchyma in adults. Upper urinary tract infection and obstruction play a role in its etiology. Immunosuppression from medications (steroids), diseases (diabetes mellitus, AIDS), and anatomic variations (pelvic kidney, horseshoe kidney) may also be risk factors for pyonephrosis. Fever, shivering, and flank pain are frequent clinical symptoms. On physical examination, a palpable abdominal mass may be associated with the hydronephrotic kidney. Septic shock and death can occur if the disorder is not

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes the relationship between nephrolithiasis, vascular disease and metabolic syndrome.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is increasing evidence that kidney stone formation is associated with a number of systemic problems including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and its components. Some of these associations are bidirectional. The reasons for these associations are not totally clear, but potential factors include metabolic responses associated with these disorders that promote a stone forming milieu in urine, environmental factors such as diet, oxidative s

BACKGROUND: The contribution of nephrolithiasis-related end-stage renal disease (ESRD) to patients requiring renal replacement therapy has never been specifically evaluated.
METHODS: Of the entire cohort of 1,391 consecutive patients who started maintenance dialysis therapy at our nephrology department between January 1989 and December 2000, a total of 45 patients (21 men) had renal stone disease as the cause of ESRD and constitute the study material. Type and cause of renal stone disease was determined in the 45 patients, as well as the change in prevalence of nephrolithiasis-related ESRD wi

Calcium oxalate (39%) and struvite (33%) were the predominant mineral types in canine nephroliths submitted to the Minnesota Urolith Center. Urate salts (12%) and calcium phosphate (2%) occurred less frequently. Provided they are not causing obstruction, struvite nephroliths may be dissolved with medical protocols. Although there are no dissolution protocols for nephroliths containing calcium, risk-benefit ratios should be considered before proceeding with surgery.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) might be characterized by either prevailing bone or renal stone patterns with different metabolic features. To explore the possibility of different hormonal patterns we studied 129 patients with PHP: 95 stone formers (SF) and 34 nonstone formers (NSF). Females prevailed over males in both groups. Severe and specific bone lesions were more evident in NSF than SF. Parathyroid gland histology displayed a prevalence of adenoma in NSF, whereas isolated hyperplasia prevailed in SF. SF had lower levels of serum Ca, urinary Ca, ALP and serum PTH than NSF. As expected

Effect of potassium-magnesium citrate on urinary biochemistry and crystallization of stone-forming salts was compared with that of potassium citrate at same dose of potassium in five normal subjects and five patients with calcium nephrolithiasis. Compared to the placebo phase, urinary pH rose significantly from 6.06 +/- 0.27 to 6.48 +/- 0.36 (mean +/- SD, p less than 0.0167) during treatment with potassium citrate (50 mEq/day for 7 days) and to 6.68 +/- 0.31 during therapy with potassium-magnesium citrate (containing 49 mEq K, 24.5 mEq Mg, and 73.5 mEq citrate per day). Urinary pH was signific

The use of percutaneous nephrostomies (PCNs) in 1456 patients (1660 kidneys) treated with extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was evaluated. In this group, 138 PCNs (130 patients) were performed in 133 kidneys. Forty-seven percent of PCNs were placed in patients with staghorn calculi; 24% were for stones in the renal pelvis, and 20% for ureteral stones. The most common indication for PCN was fever and obstruction (57%). In 15%, the indications were failure to decompress an obstructed system from a retrograde direction, clogged double-J ureteral stents, and perforation of the ureter. P

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a neurological disorder characterized by elevated intracranial pressure of unknown cause. Acetazolamide is widely used as the initial treatment option; however, previously published evidence suggests that this drug may also increase the risk of nephrolithiasis. The purpose of this study was to examine daily acetazolamide use and its relationship to nephrolithiasis and compare clinical presentation of IIH between those with and without nephrolithiasis.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study using patient data collected by the Intrac

INTRODUCTION: Nephrolithiasis is a frequent disease observed in 1 to 20 % of the general population. This disease predominates in male patients (2:1) and is characterized by a high rate of recurrences (about 50 %).
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 45-year old male patient who experienced during about ten years recurrent bilateral renal colic episodes due to brushite lithiasis. These stones were treated with multiple extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy sessions. A pyeloureteral junction syndrome predisposing to bulky stones formation has been put in evidence and required a pyeloplasty. A

Calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones are formed attached to Randall's plaques (RPs) or Randall's plugs. Mechanisms involved in the formation and growth are poorly understood. It is our hypothesis that stone formation is a form of pathological biomineralization or ectopic calcification. Pathological calcification and plaque formation in the body is triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the development of oxidative stress (OS). This review explores clinical and experimental data in support of ROS involvement in the formation of CaOx kidney stones. Under normal conditions the production

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter renal artery embolization is an effective and minimally invasive treatment option for acute renal bleeding. Early post-interventional complications include groin hematoma, incomplete embolization, coil misplacement and coil migration. Late complications are rare and mostly related to coil migration.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old woman with a history of recurrent stone disease and a lumbal meningomyelocele underwent bilateral open pyelolithotomy for bilateral staghorn calculi. Post-operatively, acute hemorrhage of the left kidney occurred and selective arterial coi

PURPOSE: To evaluate obstetric complications and birth outcome in pregnant women with nephrolithiasis.
METHODS: A retrospective population-based study comparing all pregnancies of women with and without nephrolithiasis between 1989 and 2010 was conducted. Clinical characteristics were compared, and the obstetric risk factors and labor complication were analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed in order to identify independent risk factors for nephrolithiasis.
RESULTS: During the study period, there were 219,656 deliveries, of which 195 women with nephrolithiasis wer

The prevalence of urolithiasis has been increasing for the past few decades in industrialized nations. Uric acid calculi account for a significant percentage of urinary stones. Certain risk factors may be involved in the pathogenesis of uric acid nephrolithiasis, including hyperuricosuria, low urinary volume, and persistently low urinary pH. Patients with medical conditions that promote profound hyperuricosuria are at high risk of developing uric acid calculi. These conditions include chronic diarrheal states; myeloproliferative disorders; insulin resistance, including diabetes mellitus; and m
