Factors influencing recoverability of renal function after urinary diversion through percutaneous nephrostomy.

CONTEXT: Various factors predict recoverability of kidney function preoperatively. Placement of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) and measuring the differential creatinine clearance (diff. %CrCl) is still regarded as a simple and reliable method. AIMS: The aim was to evaluate correlation between renal cortical thickness (CT), hydronephrosis, intrapelvic pressure (IPP), PCN output, renal morphological factors such as length, width, echogenicity, corticomedullary differentiation (CMD), status of c/l kidney, and presence of infection which can predict recoverable function. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A p

Ureteral obstruction associated with prostate cancer: the outcome after ultrasonographic percutaneous nephrostomy.

We retrospectively reviewed the outcome of 28 prostate cancer patients with ureteral obstruction treated by percutaneous nephrostomy. The over-all survival was 60% at 1 year and 32% at 2 years. The 1 and 2 years survival rates of 13 patients with no prior hormonal therapy were 70 and 45%, respectively, while those of patients who had previously received hormonal therapy were 46 and 17% respectively. Of 10 patients who had severe renal failure before percutaneous nephrostomy (serum creatinine greater than or equal to 7 mg per dl), 8 had an adequate return of renal function (serum creatinine les

Percutaneous nephrostomy: its value in obstructive uropathy complicating carcinoma of cervix uterus.

Percutaneous nephrostomies (PCN) were performed in 25 patients with uterine cervical malignancy between November 1982 and December 1987 at the Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute. Group 1 consisted of eight patients with untreated disease; group 2 consisted of eight cases with recurrent tumour; and group 3 consisted of nine patients with obstructive uropathy related to previous treatment. Six patients in group 1 subsequently received radical radiotherapy, and two of them were alive and disease free (33%) ten months later. Further active treatment was only possible in two of the patient

Predictive factors for spontaneous dislodgement of percutaneous nephrostomies for malignant ureteral obstruction.

PURPOSE: To investigate the etiology of spontaneous percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) catheter dislodgements and evaluate factors potentially associated with these dislodgements, including muscle-to-fat composition and tissue characteristics of catheter traces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 92 patients (63 males, 29 females; mean age 63.9 ± 11.4 years, range 28-88) undergoing 151 PCN catheter replacements between January 2016 and June 2021 were analyzed. Patients were divided into Group 1 (prophylactic replacements every 3 months, n = 41) and Group 2 (at least one spontaneous dislodgement, n

Percutaneous Nephrostomy in the Treatment of Hydronephrosis in Renal Transplant Patients - Case Report.

Percutaneous nephrostomy is a first-line minimal invasive treatment option for ureteral obstruction following kidney transplantation, with high effectiveness and a low complication rate. Percutaneous nephrostomy might be used as a temporary salvage therapy, providing acute decompression of the kidney collecting system and preventing graft loss. It can also function as a permanent and sometimes only possible option in transplant patients with frequent recurrences of ureteral stenosis who either fail an open surgical reconstruction or who are not good candidates for these procedures. We present

Misplaced drainage tube inserted in the vein in a percutaneous nephrostomy: a case series.

Percutaneous nephrostomy is a critical procedure for establishing surgical pathways from the skin to the renal collecting system. The drainage tube involved in the procedure rarely deviates into the renal vein. Herein, we report three cases in which the related drainage tube was mistakenly inserted into the renal vein and inferior vena cava after the renal vein was injured during percutaneous nephrostomy. In the three cases, the nephrostomy tube and double-J tube were gradually withdrawn from the renal pelvis or renal calyces under computed tomography (CT) monitoring. In case 1, the fistula tu

Novel Coaxial Technique of Percutaneous Nephrostomy in Young Children: A Feasibility Study.

AIMS: The conventional Seldinger and trocar techniques of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) have inherent limitations in infants and younger children. We studied the role of a novel coaxial technique of PCN in children under the age of 5 years in comparison to the conventional techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-center feasibility trial based on 24 consecutive patients (n = 24 kidneys) under the age of 5 years, conducted over 12 months, substratified into Group I (n = 10): PCN with conventional Seldinger (n = 2) and trocar (n = 8) techniques and Group II (n = 14): PCN with propo

Tumor seeding of percutaneous nephrostomy tract from urothelial carcinoma of the kidney.

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the renal pelvis has been rarely shown to metastasize to the skin. Tumor seeding from iatrogenic procedures is a source of spreading of UC to the skin. We herein present a case of primary UC of the renal pelvis with spreading to the skin from a percutaneous nephrostomy tract.

[Percutaneous nephrostomy associated with extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy in the treatment of renoureteral lithiasis].

From a series of 5000 cases that had undergone extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy at the Hospital Clinico Quirúrgico "Hermanos Ameijeiras" from March, 1986 to April, 1988, 220 cases that required percutaneous nephrostomy due to obstructive hydronephrosis from stone fragments were studied. We analyzed the clinical, radiological and ultrasound features of these cases, as well as the criteria for performing percutaneous nephrostomy. We identified the risk factors that made the procedure necessary, particularly urinary tract infection. No important complications ascribable to the foregoing proc

The role of percutaneous nephrostomy in the management of obstructing candidiasis of the urinary tract in infants.

We report on 5 neonates with obstructive urinary tract candidiasis in whom percutaneous nephrostomy had a major role in management. The advantages of percutaneous nephrostomy in this setting include prompt drainage of the obstructed renal pelvis or ureter, direct access to obtain specimens from the renal pelvis to confirm the diagnosis, direct irrigation of the fungus balls with amphotericin B and an access route for fragmentation of fungus balls by guide wire manipulation. In 3 cases percutaneous placement of the nephrostomy tube was successful in obtaining and maintaining access to the renal

Percutaneous balloon catheter nephrostomy guided by ultrasound. Results of a new technique.

A new method for percutaneous nephrostomy is described. The renal pelvis is punctured guided by ultrasound and after dilatation of the tract a 10F silicone balloon catheter is inserted. The procedure was successful in 51 of 52 attempts (98%). The catheters were maintained from two to 150 days. Eight catheters slipped out unintended (16%) 27 to 86 days after the insertion. No serious complications were seen.
