Computer-aided hepatocellular carcinoma detection on the hepatobiliary phase of gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging using a convolutional neural network: Feasibility evaluation with multi-sequence data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on liver MRI needs analysis of multi-sequence images. However, developing computer-aided detection (CAD) for every single sequence requires considerable time and labor for image segmentation. Therefore, we developed CAD for HCC on the hepatobiliary phase (HBP) of gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and evaluated its feasibility on multi-sequence, multi-unit, and multi-center data. METHODS: Patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and surgery for HCC

Real-time computer-aided diagnosis of focal pancreatic masses from endoscopic ultrasound imaging based on a hybrid convolutional and long short-term memory neural network model.

Differential diagnosis of focal pancreatic masses is based on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA/FNB). Several imaging techniques (i.e. gray-scale, color Doppler, contrast-enhancement and elastography) are used for differential diagnosis. However, diagnosis remains highly operator dependent. To address this problem, machine learning algorithms (MLA) can generate an automatic computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) by analyzing a large number of clinical images in real-time. We aimed to develop a MLA to characterize focal pancreatic masses during the EUS procedure.

Towards a precise test for malaria diagnosis in the Brazilian Amazon: comparison among field microscopy, a rapid diagnostic test, nested PCR, and a computational expert system based on artificial neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Accurate malaria diagnosis is mandatory for the treatment and management of severe cases. Moreover, individuals with asymptomatic malaria are not usually screened by health care facilities, which further complicates disease control efforts. The present study compared the performances of a malaria rapid diagnosis test (RDT), the thick blood smear method and nested PCR for the diagnosis of symptomatic malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. In addition, an innovative computational approach was tested for the diagnosis of asymptomatic malaria. METHODS: The study was divided in two parts. Fo

Computer-Assisted Annotation of Digital H&E/SOX10 Dual Stains Generates High-Performing Convolutional Neural Network for Calculating Tumor Burden in H&E-Stained Cutaneous Melanoma.

Deep learning for the analysis of H&E stains requires a large annotated training set. This may form a labor-intensive task involving highly skilled pathologists. We aimed to optimize and evaluate computer-assisted annotation based on digital dual stains of the same tissue section. H&E stains of primary and metastatic melanoma (N = 77) were digitized, re-stained with SOX10, and re-scanned. Because images were aligned, annotations of SOX10 image analysis were directly transferred to H&E stains of the training set. Based on 1,221,367 annotated nuclei, a convolutional neural network for calculatin

Classification of patients on the basis of otoneurological data by using Kohonen networks.

Machine learning methods such as neural networks, decision trees and genetic algorithms can be useful to aid in the classification of patients. We tested Kohonen artificial neural networks, which are known to be effective for classification tasks. Our sample included patients with six different diseases. The Kohonen network algorithm recognized the four largest groups reliably, but the two smallest groups were too small for the method. Neural networks seem to be promising for the computer-aided classification of otoneurological patients provided that the number of patients used is sufficiently

A quantifier-reversal approximation paradigm for recurrent neural networks.

Classical neural network approximation results take the form: for every function f and every error tolerance ϵ > 0, one constructs a neural network whose architecture and weights depend on ϵ. This paper introduces a fundamentally different approximation paradigm that reverses this quantifier order. For each target function f, we construct a single recurrent neural network (RNN) with fixed topology and fixed weights that approximates f to within any prescribed tolerance ϵ > 0 when run for sufficiently many time steps. The key mechanism enabling this quantifier reversal is temporal computation c

Rolling bearing fault diagnosis method based on dual attention multi-scale convolutional network.

To address the significant decline in the accuracy of rolling bearing fault diagnosis under variable working conditions and strong noise, which is caused by feature distribution shift and fault feature submersion, this paper proposes a bearing fault diagnosis method based on the Dual Attention Multi-Scale Convolutional Neural Network (DAMSCNN). First, a parallel multi-scale convolution module with multiple kernel sizes extracts fault features under different receptive fields, overcoming the limitation of fixed receptive fields in single-scale convolution. Second, a cascaded channel-spatial dua

Qualitative similarities and differences in visual object representations between brains and deep networks.

Deep neural networks have revolutionized computer vision, and their object representations across layers match coarsely with visual cortical areas in the brain. However, whether these representations exhibit qualitative patterns seen in human perception or brain representations remains unresolved. Here, we recast well-known perceptual and neural phenomena in terms of distance comparisons, and ask whether they are present in feedforward deep neural networks trained for object recognition. Some phenomena were present in randomly initialized networks, such as the global advantage effect, sparsene

Graph convolutional network for predicting abnormal grain growth in Monte Carlo simulations of microstructural evolution.

Recent developments in graph neural networks show promise for predicting the occurrence of abnormal grain growth, which has been a particularly challenging area of research due to its apparent stochastic nature. In this study, we generate a large dataset of Monte Carlo simulations of abnormal grain growth. We train simple graph convolution networks to predict which initial microstructures will exhibit abnormal grain growth, and compare the results to a standard computer vision approach for the same task. The graph neural network outperformed the computer vision method and achieved 73% predicti

SSA-KD: Self-structure-aware knowledge distillation for convolutional neural networks.

Knowledge Distillation has achieved great success in model compression for convolutional neural networks. However, the selection of the student model usually relies on universal small structures, which leads to plentiful incompatibility and inefficiency, i.e., the student model cannot be customized adaptively in terms of specified datasets and tasks. In this paper, we propose a self-structure-aware knowledge distillation to obtain the student model by personalizing the teacher model, namely, we first formulate a sub-network from the original teacher model, and then conduct the knowledge distil

An intelligent sparse approximate inverse selection method based on convolutional neural networks.

As a class of preconditioners, sparse approximate inverses (SAIs) have been proven to be effective in accelerating the convergence of iterative methods. However, given the wide variety of available preconditioners, determining how to select the most suitable one for a specific iterative solver remains a central challenge in scientific computing. In the past decade, the rapid development and widespread adoption of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have inspired new perspectives for tackling this challenge. When applying CNNs to the parallel construction of SAIs, three key issues must be addr

Factors Influencing the Emergence of Dependency Length Minimization in Neural Agent Simulations.

Given various grammatical options, language users prefer the word order choice that reduces the overall length of syntactic dependencies, a principle known as dependency length minimization (DLM). The origins of this preference remain an open question, particularly whether it originates from constraints on efficient information processing. Computational simulations provide a powerful approach to identifying the factors influencing the emergence of linguistic phenomena. However, previous simulations of DLM have not examined realistic interaction contexts and have produced mixed results. The pre

Explainable hybrid multi-branch CNN-ViT-GNN framework for robust hibiscus leaf disease classification.

Early and reliable diagnosis of hibiscus leaf diseases is critical to protect horticultural yield. Yet, it remains challenging under real-time field conditions where uncontrolled lighting, clutter, and the non-contiguous nature of pathological symptoms blur diagnostic cues. To address these challenges, we introduce CNN-FusionViT-GNN. This explainable hybrid multi-branch framework synergizes the fine-grained texture extraction of a DenseNet201 backbone, the global contextual modeling of a Vision Transformer (ViT), and the relational reasoning of a Graph Neural Network (GNN). The model is traine

Visionary neural networks: a graph-based approach to ocular disease analysis.

In recent years, the science of ophthalmology has seen substantial developments, with an increasing demand for precise and comprehensive diagnosis. Traditional detection approaches sometimes fail to reflect the complicated interactions between diverse eye disorders. To tackle this issue, we present "Visionary Neural Networks," an innovative approach that uses the power of graph-based architectures to give a comprehensive solution for ocular disease analysis, such as cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and normal eyes. The proposed approach incorporates detailed features essential for dis

Improving ADME Prediction with Multitask Graph Neural Networks and Assessing Explainability in Lead Optimization.

Early evaluation of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties is crucial for streamlining drug development. Traditional in vivo and in vitro approaches are often expensive. Moreover, during lead optimization, these methods rely heavily on the expertise of specialists, leading to efficiency challenges. Consequently, in silico methods for ADME prediction are attracting increasing attention. However, existing in silico methods face two major issues: a decline in predictive performance caused by limited ADME data and a lack of clarity regarding the rationale for lead op

Recurrent neural chemical reaction networks trained to switch dynamical behaviours through learned bifurcations.

Both natural and synthetic chemical systems not only exhibit a range of non-trivial dynamics, but also transition between qualitatively different dynamical behaviours as environmental parameters change. Such transitions are called bifurcations. Here, we show that recurrent neural chemical reaction networks (RNCRNs), a class of chemical reaction networks based on recurrent artificial neural networks that can be trained to reproduce a given dynamical behaviour, can also be trained to exhibit bifurcations. First, we show that RNCRNs can inherit some bifurcations defined by smooth ordinary differe

TraNce: Type-aware hypergraph neural network with biological mediators for drug repositioning.

Computational drug repositioning (DR) accelerates pharmaceutical discovery by identifying novel therapeutic indications for approved drugs. Recently, to capture higher-order biological interactions, hypergraph-based DR approaches are proposed. Nevertheless, existing studies exclusively rely on drug and disease similarity networks, or drug-disease association network, to construct hypergraph structures, while neglecting other diverse biological mediators. Furthermore, conventional hypergraph neural networks (HGNNs) encounter the intractable type-agnostic aggregation challenge, wherein heterogen
