INTRODUCTION: Sturge-Weber syndrome and encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) are neurocutaneous syndromes with unique presentations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-month-old male presented with focal seizures that progressed to medically refractory focal epilepsy. He had no ocular or cutaneous findings. Imaging demonstrated complex, transdural leptomeningeal enhancement suspicious for pial angiomatosis. Electroencephalogram showed focal seizures from the right posterior region. Sturge-Weber syndrome without cutaneous manifestations was suspected. Following right posterior disconnection surger

Neurocutaneous syndromes constitute a large and complex group of diseases in which recent medical advances, particularly in the field of molecular biology and genetics, have afforded a deeper understanding of the way in which these diseases originate. In this article, we review the advances concerning pathogenic mechanisms. First, we discuss the malformations disorders of the central nervous system associated with skin disorders, which range from spinal and/or cranial dysraphism with skin lesions to fustrated forms of malformations of the neural tube, such us membranous aplasia cutis. Neurocut

The neurocutaneous diseases are a loosely bound group of clinical entities that were initially considered to have dysplastic and/or neoplastic changes of the nervous system and skin, though other organ systems are frequently involved. During the last several decades a variety of additional diseases have been included in this disease category despite their not having any known cutaneous abnormality. The major neurocutaneous syndromes are considered in this review.

The bifunctional homooligomeric enzyme Δ1 -pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) and its encoding gene ALDH18A1 were associated with disease in 1998. Two siblings who presented paradoxical hyperammonemia (alleviated by protein), mental disability, short stature, cataracts, cutis laxa, and joint laxity, were found to carry biallelic ALDH18A1 mutations. They showed biochemical indications of decreased ornithine/proline synthesis, agreeing with the role of P5CS in the biosynthesis of these amino acids. Of 32 patients reported with this neurocutaneous syndrome, 21 familial ones hosted homozygo

A 4 1/2-year-old girl with incontinentia pigmenti developed acute-onset hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery. Many neurocutaneous syndromes have been linked to ischemic stroke syndromes. Incontinentia pigmenti has not been associated with stroke syndromes in the past; however, this report illustrates that the patient and her mother, who also has incontinentia pigmenti, may have had similar ischemic stroke events.

This article explores three neurocutaneous syndromes (NCSs), i.e. genetic disorders producing developmental abnormalities of the skin and an increased risk of neurological complications. In this review, different aspects of ataxia telangiectasia, Menkes kinky hair disease and neurocutaneous melanosis are examined: clinical features, genetic defect, mutation spectrum, pathogenesis, and neurobiological basis; indications for clinical practice are also provided to the readers. The aim of this review is to stress the importance of cooperation among dermatologists, neurologists and psychiatrists, i

Fishman syndrome, also known as encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL), is a rare, congenital neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by unilateral skin, eye, and brain abnormalities. Epileptic seizures and developmental delay are usually present. We report the clinical, radiological, and, for the first time, neurophysiological findings in a 24-year-old woman diagnosed with ECCL who was evaluated for epilepsy surgery. Functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed transfer of memory and language functions to the nonaffected hemisphere, providing evidence that functional reorganization and r

A boy, born to first cousin parents of Algerian origin, first presented at the age of 9 years with growth failure, mental retardation, and dysmorphic facies. Progressive vitiligo developed from the age of 12 and distal duplication of the urethra was later recognised. The basis of this syndrome remains to be determined; autoimmune disease, chromosomal breakage syndromes, and other neurocutaneous syndromes have been excluded.

The considerable variety of diseases involving both the skin and the peripheral or central nervous system is due to the developmental relationship between skin and nervous system. Diseases of the nervous system resulting in skin changes comprise disorders of nails, hair, sweat and sebaceous glands as well as neuropathic ulcers in various manifestations. Neurocutaneous syndromes (phacomatoses) are nevoid systemic diseases comprising neurofibromatoses, tuberose sclerosis, ataxia telangiectasia, nevoid angiomatoses and other neurocutaneous disorders. Polytopic disorders of the skin and nervous sy

The case of a 21-year-old woman who was affected by both encephalofacial angiomatosis (Sturge-Weber syndrome) and neurocutaneous melanosis is reported. Her signs and symptoms consisted of an interesting overlap of the characteristics of these two neurocutaneous syndromes with glaucoma, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, mental retardation and vascular and melanotic skin lesions observed throughout her course. The clinical diagnosis presented considerable difficulties. The simultaneous occurrence of these two disorders has not been previously reported and this is the first reported case where the cutaneo

An unusual retinal manifestation of arteriovenous communications is reported in a case showing a combination of Sturge-Weber and Kippel-Trenaunay syndromes. The arteriovenous communications are thought to be similar to those seen in the limbs in Parkes-Weber syndrome. This retinal finding indicates that the three syndromes are intricately related to each other and may be an incomplete manifestation of a single pathophysiologic entity which may be named neurocutaneous angiomatosis.

Phakomatoses, also known as neurocutaneous disorders, comprise a vast number of entities that predominantly affect structures originated from the ectoderm such as the central nervous system and the skin, but also the mesoderm, particularly the vascular system. Extensive literature exists about the most common phakomatoses, namely neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, von Hippel-Lindau and Sturge-Weber syndrome. However, recent developments in the understanding of the molecular underpinnings of less common phakomatoses have sparked interest in these disorders. In this article, we review the cl

Neurocutaneous disorders represent a heterogeneous group of conditions affecting the skin (with pigmentary/vascular abnormalities, hamartomas or tumors) and the central and peripheral nervous systems. In recent years, besides the well-known neurocutaneous diseases (e.g., the different forms of neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis complex, Sturge-Weber syndrome and mosaic pigmentary/hamartomatous disorders), new distinctive syndromes have been characterized, extending our knowledge on the spectrum of these conditions. The concurrent presence of pigmentary abnormalities (both of the hypo- and h

The Dutch ophthalmologist, Jan van der Hoeve, first introduced the terms phakoma/phakomata (from the old Greek word "ϕαχοσ" = lentil, spot, lens-shaped) to define similar retinal lesions recorded in tuberous sclerosis (1920) and in neurofibromatosis (1923). He later applied this concept: (a) to similar lesions in other organs (e.g. brain, heart and kidneys) (1932) and (b) to other disorders (i.e. von Hippel-Lindau disease and Sturge-Weber syndrome) (1933), and coined the term phakomatoses. At the same time, the American neurologist Paul Ivan Yakovlev and psychiatrist Riley H. Guthrie (1931) es

Sparse, brittle, sulphur-deficient hair is an excellent marker for several autosomal recessive neurocutaneous syndromes. The term 'trichothiodystrophy' is commonly used in publications on such syndromes and the best characterized trichothiodystrophy syndrome is associated with skin photosensitivity and intellectual impairment. Patients with these three cardinal signs usually have an underlying DNA repair defect. Here we describe clinical and laboratory findings in two patients with trichothiodystrophy and defective DNA repair alongside findings in three other cases who have different trichothi

A 56-year-old woman with many unusual manifestations of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome is described. In addition to retinal hemangioblastomas, pheochromocytoma, renal cell carcinoma, and multiple organ cysts, she had a cerebellar astrocytoma, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis, and a metastatic calcitonin-secreting islet cell carcinoma. This case report documents the first example of a metastatic islet cell tumor in a patient with von Hippel-Lindau disease. The possible relationship between this disorder, the other neurocutaneous syndromes, and the multiple endocr
