Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of uterine cervix is a rare variant of cervical carcinoma with features of high aggressiveness. It is difficult to manage these tumors. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and its prognosis is generally poor. The present report describes a 65 year old woman who presented with postmenopausal bleeding and had a friable polypoidal growth hanging from the cervix. Microscopic examination of the growth showed features of small cell carcinoma. Neuroendocrine cellular characteristics were assessed by using antibodies against neuron specific enolase. The case

BACKGROUND: The association of pancreatitis with neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas is uncommon, whereas its association with exocrine pancreatic cancer is well recognized. Since the latter, but not the islet cell tumor, is thought to originate within the ductal system, it is not surprising that pancreatitis is less likely to result from the islet cell tumor. The senior author has recently noted that the first recognizable indication of an islet cell carcinoma may be one or more discrete attacks of acute pancreatitis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Acute pancreatitis, resulting from an islet cell tu

We report a case of neuroendocrine cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. The patient was a 70-year-old man, complaining of pollakisuria. Cystoscopy and computerized tomography revealed a nonpapillary tumor. The tumor was removed by transurethral resection. Because of muscular invasion (T2) and histological grade, total cystectomy and ileal conduit were carried out. Examination of the resected specimen indicated pathological TO. He rejected our proposal to have chemotherapy. Twelve months post-operatively he was alive without recurrence.

Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin (Merkel cell tumor), a rare malignancy originating from the skin, has only been established in the recent years. It has a main predilection on the skin in the head and neck region with an obvious tendency of local recurrence and early metastasis. Histopathologically, it resembles the neuroendocrine carcinoma from other sites of the body in morphology, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructure. Diagnosis of this tumor is quite difficult. Based upon two of our cases as verified by electron microscopy and/or immunohistochemistry, the clinical and patholo

INTRODUCTION: TROP2 antibody-drug conjugates have shown promising anti-tumour activity, but neither the activity of these agents nor TROP2 expression has been well studied in pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), a rare and aggressive cancer type. We aimed to (i) determine the prevalence of TROP2 immunoreactivity in LCNEC; (ii) assess whether TROP2 immunoreactivity in LCNEC is related to RB1 loss on IHC or to the presence of NSCLC or SCLC components and (iii) determine whether TROP2 immunoreactivity in LCNEC has prognostic significance.
METHODS: TROP2 immunohistochemistry was

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is a disorder characterized by neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, tumorlets and tumors, manifesting as lung nodules, chronic cough, and airflow obstruction. Often misdiagnosed as asthma, DIPNECH lies at the cross-section of oncology, obstructive airway disease and interstitial lung disease. With the increasing use of CT scans leading to higher rates of lung nodule detection, it is important for clinicians to be familiar with DIPNECH.
RECENT FINDINGS: The evidence base in DIPNECH is sparse and limited to re

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is a rare, chronic condition that predominantly affects women over the age of 60.
CURRENT KNOWLEDGE: DIPNECH combines non-specific clinical signs (chronic cough, dyspnea), bronchial obstruction on PFT and signs suggestive of bronchiolitis on chest CT associated with nodules and multiple micronodules. The diagnosis is most often histological, associating neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, tumorlets and, inconsistently, carcinoid tumors and constrictive bronchiolitis.
PROSPECTS: There are currently no recommenda

UNLABELLED: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder is an extremely rare tumour with aggressive behaviour and a bad prognosis. Here, we report a case of a 65-year-old lady suspected of carcinoma of the gallbladder and underwent extended cholecystectomy. The histopathology report revealed neuroendocrine carcinoma of a large cell type of gall bladder infiltrating the liver and three periportal and pericholedochal lymph nodes. She had an uneventful perioperative period and was doing good till 6 months of follow-up. The only potentially curative treatment for large cell neuroendocri

The treatment of mixed large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is less studied due to its low incidence. However, the presence of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion gene is rare in such tumours, ALK inhibitors may represent a promising therapeutic option instead of cytostatic therapy. Routine chest X-ray and then computed tomography (CT) examination revealed a pulmonary tumour in a 52-year-old asymptomatic woman. The neoplasm was removed by lobectomy. Histological examination confirmed papillary predominant lung adenocarcinoma. The patient was treated with postoperative chemotherapy and irrad

Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the vagina is a very rare disease. We present a case study of a 52-year-old female who presented to the hospital with complaints of urinary dribbling, burning micturition, pain, and per vaginal bleeding for three to four months. A firm globular mass of approximately 5-6 cm was felt in the anterior vaginal wall per speculum examination. Diagnosis of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma was made with tissue biopsy and immunohistochemistry. Diagnostic imaging (MRI, positron emission tomography (PET)-CT) plays a vital role in reaching the diagnosis and

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) of the ureter is a rare malignant tumor originating from the metaplasia of urothelial cells. This report presents a case of ureteral SCNEC that was preliminarily disclosed by computed tomography; thereafter, transabdominal ultrasonography, transrectal ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance urography were performed to characterize the mass.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine endometrium is extremely rare and found in <1% of all primary endometrial carcinomas. We report a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium detected in a 65-year-old woman and focus our attention on the main imaging features. The low apparent diffusion coefficient value and high maximum standardized uptake value for neuroendocrine cancer serve to distinguish this cancer from endometrial cancer.

A 76-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for refractory diarrhea with a poor antidiarrheal effect. Chest and abdominal computed tomography revealed a 24×22-mm mass in the left upper lobe of lung and multiple masses in the liver. Urine 5-Hydroxy indol acetic acid was markedly elevated. A liver biopsy revealed large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with serotonin production, suggestive of a lung origin, and a lung biopsy revealed combined large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, we made a definitive diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome caused by large-cell neur

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant salivary gland tumor characterized by tumor cells displaying acinar features. Usually presenting as a slow-growing tumor, ACC, however, may show dedifferentiation to a higher grade including neuroendocrine carcinoma. In addition, ACC may rarely show focal neuroendocrine differentiation without any frank evidence of neuroendocrine carcinoma. We describe such a case of ACC of the parotid gland in a 65-year-old female, which showed neuroendocrine differentiation. The diagnostic clues, immunohistochemistry panel, and prognostic and treatment aspects are a

INTRODUCTION: Only a few large-scale studies have focused on large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, a rare type of pulmonary malignancy, and uniform diagnostic criteria and standardized treatments are lacking. This study aimed to assess the treatment outcomes and factors influencing patients' prognosis with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma.
METHODS: The data of 55 patients with pathologically confirmed large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, treated at our hospital from January 2013 to January 2018, were collected. Relationships between clinical characteristics, diagnoses, treatment outcomes, a

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNC) is one of the rarest types of bladder cancer occurring in <1%. Either pure or mixed with another component, it remains one of the most aggressive types of bladder cancer. We report a case of LCNC of the bladder with an adenocarcinomatous component. The patient was a 64-year-old smoker male, who presented for the first time with dysuria and hematuria. A bladder tumor invading the anterior and right lateral bladder walls was discovered, without any secondary localizations. Tumor biopsy showed an LCNC with adenocarcinomatous components. The patient was t

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma(SCNC) of larynx is very rare. Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas constitute less than 0.5% of all laryngeal cancers. Tumor can occur in any laryngeal subsite, while the supraglottis is the most common. Patients usually complaint with hoarseness and neck mass. The diagnosis of this kind of carcinomas relies strictly on histopathological examination and immunohistochemical testing. The prognosis of laryngeal SCNC is generally poor. Here, we report a case of a 55-year-old-male patient who presented with a poorly differentiated SCNC of the supraglottic

The ureter is an extremely rare site for small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. We present a case of this disease in a patient who presented without urological symptoms. The multidisciplinary team proposed nephroureterectomy (if fit) or watchful waiting as management. After discussion with the patient a decision in favour of watchful waiting was made. We report her case including a review of the literature, and emphasise that although small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas can be very aggressive, they can remain asymptomatic.
