Cutaneous neurofibromas (cNFs) are benign tumors of the skin that affect >95% of adults with neurofibromatosis type 1. Despite their benign histology, cNFs can significantly impact QOL due to disfigurement, pain, and pruritus. There are no approved therapies for cNFs. Existing treatments are limited to surgery or laser-based treatments that have had mixed success and cannot be readily applied to a large number of tumors. We review cNF treatment options that are currently available and under investigation, discuss the regulatory considerations specific to cNFs, and propose strategies to improve

Neurofibroma (NF) rarely arises in the retropharyngeal space (RPS) of patients with or without Neurofibromatosis type I (NF-I). The diffuse subtype of NF (DNF) is characterized by an infiltrative growth pattern and typically involves the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the head and neck. We describe the clinic-pathologic features of a DNF involving the RPS of an adult without NF-I. To date, this subtype of NF has never been reported at this site.

Metastatic deposits are the most common cause of pleural masses, solitary or multiple. Primary pleural neoplasms are rare entities that are occasionally encountered. Of these, the tumors of neurogenic origin are exceedingly rare with only a few cases reported in the literature. We describe a case of an isolated neurofibroma involving the pleura in a 23-year-old male patient, who underwent CT and MRI scans of the thorax as part of the initial investigations. The final diagnosis was clinched by a CT-guided biopsy of the lesion.

Plexiform neurofibromas are congenital peripheral nerve sheath tumors characteristic of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-a frequent neurocutaneous disorder caused by mutations of the NF1 tumor suppressor gene. Since plexiform neurofibromas are a major cause of the burden of disease and may also progress to malignancy, many efforts have been undertaken to find a cure for these tumors. However, neither surgery nor medication has so far produced a breakthrough therapeutic success. Recently, a clinical phase I study reported significant shrinkage of plexiform neurofibromas following treatment with t

Isolated neurofibromas in the absence of systemic neurofibromatosis are known as solitary or localized neurofibromas. When present in the orbit, these lesions may appear clinically and radiographically similar to other tumors, complicating diagnosis and management. Key radiographic signs may guide clinicians to the correct diagnosis when the presentation and patient demographic data obfuscate the disease entity. We present a case of a large multi-lobulated neurofibroma misdiagnosed as a lymphangioma. A brief review of these tumors emphasizing key radiographic features is also included.

Neurofibroma, a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor, usually appears together with café-au-lait spots, iris nodules, and other tumors within the scope of neurofibromatosis von Recklinghausen type 1 tumors. A solitary neurofibroma of the eyelid is relatively rare. In this case report, we present a 39-year-old woman who had a lesion on the eyelid crease, previously treated as a chalazion. Due to persistent wound crusting, the lesion was excised above the tarsus. Pathological examination revealed a solitary neurofibroma. The patient did not have other clinical symptoms of neurofibromatosis, and

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromas are benign nerve sheath tumors that usually affect peripheral nerves and are related to neurofibromatosis type 1; however, they have not been described as a cause of intraparenchymal brain tumor.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of intracranial myxoid neurofibroma in a 19-year-old female patient manifested as an intense and progressive cephalea, followed by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phonophobia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an extant, expansive left frontoparietal parafalcine/parasagittal tumor. Histopathologic examination dete

We report an extremely rare case of intramastoid neurofibroma. A mass with destruction of the mastoid bone of a 51-year-old woman was examined with computed tomography. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an ill-defined soft tissue mass with the opacification of mastoid air cells that had a mass effect in the same area. The patient underwent left subtotal temporal bone resection, and histological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the lesion to be a neurofibroma. Given that similar imaging features of neurofibroma have been reported previously elsewhere in the head/neck

Dumbbell-shaped swellings in neurofibroma have been commonly described in the spine, thorax, cranial cavity, and pelvis; however, dumbbell-shaped swellings in the peripheries are rare. Here, we report a dumbbell-shaped neurofibroma over the pinna in an 18-year-old female patient, its successful surgical management, and its association with Hashimoto thyroiditis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first ever case to be reported of a dumbbell-shaped neurofibroma over the external ear and only the fourth case of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) to be associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis.

We describe a premature neonate with an extensive plexiform neurofibroma. Prenatal ultrasound at 32 weeks of gestation was normal. Postnatal examination was significant for a palpable left neck mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head demonstrated a mass involving the left cavernous sinus with spreading to the left orbital region. MRI of the neck was positive for extensive adenopathy, left more than right, with extension into the deep face region and infratemporal fossa on the left side. MRI of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis demonstrated a mass extending from the superior mediastinum

Neurofibroma is a benign tumour derived from the neural sheaths of peripheral nerves and composed of Schwann cells, fibroblast-like cells and intermediate cells. The usual clinical presentation of an oral neurofibroma is swelling. A 62-year-old woman was referred to our department of otorhinolaryngology with irritation and dysaesthesia of the lateral aspect of the tongue. The only finding was a slightly red area from which a biopsy was taken. The macroscopic findings observed by the surgeon were consistent with normal tongue tissue. The histopathological examination showed a small, rounded tum

The neurofibroma is a benign tumor of neural origin, not frequently located in the oral cavity, and, especially, extremely rare in the soft palate. When it occurs solitarily, it is a spontaneous tumor without any internal manifestations. We report a case of an isolated neurofibroma of the soft palate not associated with von Recklinghausen disease.

A 15-year-old, spayed, female poodle dog was presented for evaluation of a mass of tissue prolapsed from the vulva. The dog had been hysterectomized when it was 5 years old. A vaginal mass had been removed approximately 10 months before presentation. Haematological and serum biochemistry analyses demonstrated mild leucocytosis and glycaemia. A vaginal smear was predominantly made up of parabasal cells and intermediate cells with no neoplastic cells. Thoracal and abdominal radiographic findings were unremarkable. The ovaries could not be identified using abdominal ultrasonography. A midline exp

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of the disease is 1/3000 newborns; it is more frequent in men than in women with a 3:1 ratio in all races. Genitourinary tract neurofibromas usually arise from the pelvic and bladder nerves, and the prostatic plexus. Bladder is the most frequently affected organ of the urinary tract; bladder neurofibromatosis may present as a diffuse infiltrative process or an isolated neurofibroma. Bladder neurofibromas arise from nervous ganglia of the bladder wall and stain positive for protein S-100 and type IV collagen with immunohistochemical techniques.

Schwannomas are well-circumscribed ovoid masses that most commonly present in the superior orbit. Although it may be difficult to differentiate these benign masses from other orbital tumors on radiologic imaging, the CT and, in particular, the MR imaging characteristics can sometimes point to the diagnosis of a nerve sheath tumor. A definitive diagnosis can be made through correlation with histopathologic findings, however. In most cases, schwannomas have low malignant potential, and with total excision, recurrence is rare.

Neurofibromas are a hallmark of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). They are usually benign and rarely present in the thyroid gland region. There is a suspected association between NF1 and intramedullary thyroid carcinoma and there is a well-known association between NF1 and pheochromocytoma. Here, we present a 55-year-old man with typical symptoms of NF1, whose course was complicated by a neurofibroma of the thyroid gland. His clinical spectrum of symptoms included bilateral cataract established before the age of 35 years, quadriparesis and an intrathoracic mass. The patient died because of abdom

Tumors of nervous origin in the retroperitoneum are rare without specific symptoms which diagnosis is usually very difficult. The authors report a case of an asymptomatic patient with two benign retroperitoneal neurofibromas, one of them calcified and located near the inferior pole of the left kidney; the other tumor was closely adhered to the pancreatic tail in the supramesocolic region. Both were resected with appropriated surgical margins. The histopathologic and immunohistochemical studies established the correct diagnosis of the lesions. The authors comment the diagnostic tests of these t
