Trends in dental care utilization and tooth loss among vulnerable adults in Nevada (2018-2024): a repeated cross-sectional analysis in the context of COVID-19 and medicaid coverage expansions.

BACKGROUND: Oral health disparities persist among adults with chronic conditions and structural barriers to care, including diabetes, disability, and residence in non-metropolitan areas. Recent Medicaid expansions in Nevada and COVID-19-related disruptions to dental service delivery provide important context for examining population-level trends in oral health care utilization and outcomes. METHODS: We used repeated cross-sectional data from the Nevada Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024 (N = 11,552) to examine trends in past-year dental visits an

Mercury and drought along the lower Carson river, Nevada: III. Effects on blood and organ biochemistry and histopathology of snowy egrets and Black-crowned night-herons on Lahontan reservoir, 2002-2006.

A 10-year study (1997-2006) was conducted to evaluate reproduction and health of aquatic birds in the Carson River Basin of northwestern Nevada (on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Natural Priorities List) due to high mercury (Hg) concentrations from past mining activities. This part of the study evaluated physiological associations with blood Hg in young snowy egrets (Egretta thula) and black-crowned night-herons (Nycticorax nycticorax), and organ biochemistry and histopathological effects in snowy egrets on Lahontan Reservoir (LR) from the period 2002-2006. SYMPOSIUM REPORT: An Evidence-Based Approach to IBS and CIC: Applying New Advances to Daily Practice: A Review of an Adjunct Clinical Symposium of the American College of Gastroenterology Meeting October 16, 2016 • Las Vegas, Nevada.

Many nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies are available to manage irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) regularly publishes reviews on IBS and CIC therapies. The most recent of these reviews was published by the ACG Task Force on the Management of Functional Bowel Disorders in 2014. The key objective of this review was to evaluate the efficacy of therapies for IBS or CIC compared with placebo or no treatment in randomized controlled trials. Evidence-based approaches to managing diarrhea-predominant IBS i

Queerest little city in the world: gay reno in the sixties.

This article is a history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in Reno, Nevada, during the 1960s. Despite prevalent beliefs that there was not a coherent LGBT community in Reno before Stonewall, my article shows the opposite. Linked by several LGBT-owned businesses and public places, Reno had a well-defined community that people knew about. The article also shows how Reno was looked at as a failing marginalized city throughout the 1960s and that this, in turn, allowed it to become a prime place for LGBT peoples to move and start gentrifying the area. The article also

Pursuing decarbonization along with national security: Assessing public support for the Thacker Pass lithium mine.

Decarbonization policies are being stymied by political conflict. Local communities might oppose decarbonization infrastructure such as solar farms, mines, or transmission lines if they view these projects as imposing high costs on them in relation to their benefits. To decarbonize, the automobile industry seeks to shift from the internal combustion engine to electric vehicles, which require lithium-based rechargeable batteries. In the United States, to meet the increasing lithium demand through domestic sources, there is a proposal for a lithium mine in Thacker Pass, Nevada, which faces stron

Effect of HIV reporting by name on use of HIV testing in publicly funded counseling and testing programs.

CONTEXT: Policies requiring confidential reporting by name to state health departments of persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have potential to cause some of them to avoid HIV testing. OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in use of HIV testing services at publicly funded HIV counseling and testing sites before and after the implementation of HIV reporting policies. DESIGN AND SETTING: Analysis of service provision data from 6 state health departments (Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, and Tennessee) 12 months before and 12 months after HIV reporting was int

Gestational Age and the Risk of Maternal Breast Cancer: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

There is limited evidence that the gestational age at delivery may influence the risk of maternal breast cancer. While extreme prematurity has been suggested to increase the risk, there seems to be no study available so far that investigates the due effects of a late delivery. This research aimed to identify the impact of both preterm and late deliveries on the risk of maternal breast cancer within a period of 5 years after birth. Our dataset was created by linking data from the Nevada Cancer Registry database (1995-2008) and the birth certificates issued by the Nevada State Health Division (1

Repeated patterns of reptile diversification in Western North America supported by the Northern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria coerulea).

Understanding the processes that shape genetic diversity by either promoting or preventing population divergence can help identify geographic areas that either facilitate or limit gene flow. Furthermore, broadly distributed species allow us to understand how biogeographic and ecogeographic transitions affect gene flow. We investigated these processes using genomic data in the Northern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria coerulea), which is widely distributed in Western North America across diverse ecoregions (California Floristic Province and Pacific Northwest) and mountain ranges (Sierra Nevada, Coasta

Gambling and pathological gambling among university students.

Students from six colleges and universities in five states in the U.S. (New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, and Nevada) were surveyed concerning their gambling behavior and the rate of pathological gambling. Type of gambling varied by state, with students in the northeast and Nevada gambling more than students in Oklahoma and Texas. Over 90% of males and 82% of females had gambled. One third of the males and 15% of females gambled once a week or more. Rates of pathological gambling ranged from 8% in New York to 4% in Nevada. The incidence of pathological gambling was high among males, Hispa

Prediction of fish and sediment mercury in streams using landscape variables and historical mining.

Widespread mercury (Hg) contamination of aquatic systems in the Sierra Nevada of California, U.S., is associated with historical use to enhance gold (Au) recovery by amalgamation. In areas affected by historical Au mining operations, including the western slope of the Sierra Nevada and downstream areas in northern California, such as San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River-San Joaquin River Delta, microbial conversion of Hg to methylmercury (MeHg) leads to bioaccumulation of MeHg in food webs, and increased risks to humans and wildlife. This study focused on developing a predictive model fo

Isolated Vascular Rings Are Common Cardiovascular Malformations.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the prevalence of isolated vascular rings in the general population of Southern Nevada. METHODS: We identified those prenatally and postnatally diagnosed with an isolated vascular ring between January 2014 and December 2021. We included only those with vascular or ligamentous structures completely encircling the trachea and esophagus. To investigate the prevalence of isolated vascular rings, we included only those with situs solitus, levocardia, and no significant intracardiac malformations. RESULTS: We identified 112 patients. Of the 112, 66 (59%) were female. The

Coccidioides genomes from low-incidence states reveal complex migration history across the western United States.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), caused by the fungal pathogen Coccidioides, is increasing in incidence across the western United States and parts of the Americas. However, genomic data from low-incidence regions remain scarce, limiting our understanding of the pathogen's dispersal and evolution. To address this gap, we prospectively collected Coccidioides-positive clinical isolates submitted to a national diagnostic laboratory between January 2023 and November 2024. We performed whole-genome sequencing on 27 clinical isolates from Utah, Colorado, and Nevada-states with no previously availab

A new species of tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) from the Death Valley ecosystem.

A new tiger beetle species, Cicindela timbisha Duran, Chambers, Nelson & Roman n. sp., of the tribe Cicindelini, is described from the Death Valley ecoregion of eastern California, USA. It is most similar to C. senilis G.Horn, 1866 but is distinguished on the basis of multiple morphological characteristics, including differences in maculations, chaetotaxy of the antennae and a statistically significant difference in body size (P<0.001). The new species also differs from C. senilis in that it is found in an isolated freshwater spring in an inland basin east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, where

Recounting Workforce: The Impact of Multi-licensure on Behavioral Health Provider Estimates.

Accurate behavioral health workforce estimates are essential for workforce planning, shortage designation, and policy development. However, workforce reports often rely on license counts rather than unique providers, which can inflate workforce estimates when clinicians hold multiple licenses. This study examined the prevalence and geographic distribution of multi-licensure among Nevada behavioral health providers and assessed its impact on workforce estimates. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using administrative licensure data from Nevada licensing boards for Marriage and Family Ther

Decreasing rate of inpatient pediatric bipolar disorder diagnosis between 2005 and 2015.

INTRODUCTION: The rate of bipolar disorder (BD) diagnosis in youth increased between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s in the U.S. and remained low in other countries. The discrepancy resulted in concerns regarding misdiagnosis of BD. However, the longitudinal trajectory of BD diagnosis subsequent to the mid-2000s was unclear. Therefore, the current study assessed longitudinal changes in the rate of inpatient BD diagnosis in the state of Nevada between 2005 and 2015. METHODS: Data included Medicaid administrative billing claims (n = 48,108 unique admissions) for youth 5-17 hospitalized at one of fi

LSTM-Based Recurrent Neural Network Predicts Influenza-Like-Illness in Variable Climate Zones.

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus is responsible for a recurrent, yearly epidemic in most temperate regions of the world. Flu has been responsible for a high disease burden in recent years, despite the confounding presence of SARS-CoV-2. However, the mechanisms behind seasonal variance in flu burden are not well understood. This study seeks to expand understanding of the impact of variable climate regions on seasonal flu trends. To that end, three climate regions have been selected. Each region represents a different ecological zone and provides different weather patterns. METHODS: A long short-ter
