Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common ocular and periocular neoplasm of horses, typically arising from the limbus, third eyelid mucosa or mucocutaneous junctions of the upper and lower eyelids. Tumours are locally invasive, prone to recurrence and may rarely metastasize. Histological evaluation is required for definitive diagnosis and atypical SCC subtypes may be diagnostically challenging. Here we describe a clear cell SCC in the third eyelid of a 16-year-old female Quarter Horse. The red and invasive mass was surgically excised for histological evaluation. The lesion consisted of

Four closely related domestic shorthair kittens were investigated following the detection of abnormalities in their gait, difficulty opening their mouths and muscle hypertrophy. They walked with a stiff, stilted gait, with the stiffness reducing during exercise. Startling of the kittens resulted in hyperextension of the limbs and falling to lateral recumbency, or spasm of the orbicularis oculi muscle, prolonged prolapse of the nictitating membranes and flattening of the ears. One kitten was intermittently dysphonic. Endotracheal intubation of the anaesthetised kittens was difficult due to an i

The ocular penetration of topically applied [14C]-atenolol in the rabbit was determined by means of liquid scintillation counting. Only one eye was treated, the fellow eye serving as a control. Blood plasma levels were measured as well. The absolute amount of atenolol which penetrated the eye was very low, but a relatively high concentration was achieved in the tissues of the nictitating membrane. We could only detect an increase in the amount of atenolol with time in the aqueous humor. In all other ocular tissues, including iris and ciliary body, the atenolol level remained constant with time

A 2-year-old neutered male European short-haired cat was presented for a persistent discharge from the scar of previous left eye enucleation, performed 6 months prior by the referring veterinarian. A surgical exploration of the orbit was performed and retained nictitating membrane glandular and conjunctival tissues were removed. Eleven days later, the cat developed an orbital pneumatosis caused by retrograde movement of air through a patent nasolacrimal system and diagnosed by survey radiographic examination of the skull. Nasolacrimal system patency was assessed by dacryocystography performed

Systemic fungal diseases are important diagnostic considerations in all sick cats, particularly in cats with ocular symptoms. The most common ocular manifestation of these diseases is posterior uveitis (choroiditis); however, anterior uveitis is sometimes present and is usually secondary to the inflammation in the posterior segment. Occasionally, adnexal diseases such as blepharitis, inflammation of the nictitating membrane, and ocular discharge may be present in cats with systemic mycoses. The prognosis for cats with systemic fungal diseases has changed with the advent of the triazole antifun

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to establish normal ophthalmic parameters for selected diagnostic tests, and to describe the orbital anatomy and adnexal histology of the broad-snouted caiman.
METHOD: A total of 35 Caiman latirostris that were free of obvious ocular diseases were used to measure the parameters in this investigation. Ages ranged from 5 to 15 years. Ophthalmic diagnostic tests were conducted, including evaluation of tear production with Schirmer Tear test-1 (STT1), culture of the conjunctival bacterial flora, applanation tonometry, conjunctival cytology, nictiating membrane i

Two experiments were conducted in rabbits to examine the effects of ketamine (0, 100, and 200 mg/kg) on the acquisition and retention of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane response (NMR). Classical conditioning of the NMR was accomplished by pairing tone and light conditioned stimuli (CS) with paraorbital shock as the unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Experiment 1 assessed the effects of the drug on acquisition and retention of conditioned responses (CR) and determined the role of previous exposure to the experimental environment. Ketamine blocked the display of CR. However, data fro

Pempidine (1:2:2:6:6-pentamethylpiperidine) is a long-acting ganglion-blocking compound which is effective by mouth. By intravenous injection it has a similar potency to hexamethonium on the preganglionically stimulated nictitating membrane of the cat. The compound blocks the effects of intravenous nicotine and of peripheral vagal stimulation on the blood pressure; it also causes dilatation of the pupil after removal of the sympathetic innervation. On the guinea-pig ileum, the predominant effect of the compound is to inhibit nicotine contractions. Pempidine is well absorbed from the gastro-int

A 1-year-old, female spayed, domestic shorthair cat presented for blepharospasm of the right eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscopic examination showed focal corneal ulceration and presumptive keratomalacia of the right eye. Examination of the left eye was normal apart from a focal endothelial opacity. Within the first 24 h of medical management, the right eye developed marked corneal edema and globular anterior protrusion of the corneal surface consistent with feline acute corneal hydrops (FACH). Surgical management consisted of a bridge conjunctival graft, nictitating membrane flap, and temporary tars

Cherry eye is the common name for prolapse of the nictitans gland, a tear-producing gland situated under the third eyelid of dogs. Cherry eye is characterized by a red fleshy protuberance in the corner of the eye, resembling a cherry. This protrusion is a displacement of the normal gland of the third eyelid, thought to be caused by a defect in the connective tissue that secures the gland in place. Options for treatment may include anti-inflammatory medications in mild cases, but surgical replacement of the gland is usually indicated. Cherry eye is most often seen in dogs under the age of two y

Histologic examination revealed acid-fast organisms in a granulomatous lesion involving the cornea of an eye of a Maximilian's Parrot. Disseminated mycobacteriosis was also diagnosed. Antemortem attempts at determining the cause of the corneal lesion had been unsuccessful. Ocular involvement in birds with avian tuberculosis is uncommon. The corneal lesion in the parrot was likely initiated by a dysfunctional third eyelid.

Aquaporins (AQPs) function as water channels in many types of cells involved in fluid transport. More than 10 isoforms have been identified, and these are differentially expressed in many types of mammalian cells in the body. Six AQPs (AQP0, AQP1, AQP3, AQP4, AQP5, and AQP9) have been identified in the eyes of humans and/or rodents. The unique permeability characteristics and distribution of AQPs indicate their diverse roles in the regulation of water homeostasis in the eye. The aim of this study was to investigate the localisation of AQPs in normal canine eyes, with AQP0 protein expressed in

Aclacinomycin A, a new anthracycline antitumor antibiotic, was given to rabbits by single instillation or single intracutaneous injection and to guinea pigs by single subcutaneous or intramuscular injection to examine the irritative effect. Slight dilatation of blood vessel and swelling in the conjunctiva and nictitating membrane were observed in the eyes of rabbits given 1% solution. Edema in the bulbar conjunctiva, iris and cornea was histologically noted. Washing of the eyes after drug instillation prevented these damages. Subcutaneous and intracutaneous injections of 1% solution (0.2 ml) g

A 15-week-old Australian Labradoodle puppy was presented to The University of Queensland Small Animal Hospital for bilateral eyelid agenesis/coloboma and associated ocular complications. Enucleation of the left globe and repair of the right eyelid via a lip-to-lid transmucosal flap was performed. Given the subsequent development of prolapse of the gland of the nictitating membrane and a lack of vision of the right eye, enucleation of the right globe was then performed 2 months following the initial procedure. Both globes and a skin wedge from the right eye were submitted to The University of Q

Two dogs with previous parotid duct transpositions presented with unrelated ocular disease. In both cases, ophthalmic examination revealed the need for enucleation or exenteration. In case 1, systemic coccidioidomycosis was diagnosed with panuveitis and secondary glaucoma of the left eye. In this case, the parotid duct was ligated at the time of enucleation to stop salivary secretions. This dog encountered morbidity in the form of a sialocele that did not resolve for 11 months. In case 2, ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a discrete mass within the left medial orbit that was suspecte

Cimetidine produced a dose-dependent and reversible inhibition of contractions of the nictitating membrane elicited through stimulation of the preganglionic nerve supplying the superior cervical ganglion in the anaesthetized cat. Postganglionic nerve stimulation resulted in only a slight and variable inhibition of the contractions. Both hexamethonium and cimetidine also produced a dose-dependent and reversible fall in arterial blood pressure. The ganglion blocking activity of cimetidine was much weaker than that of hexamethonium; the ED50 ratio (cimetidine:hexamethonium) calculated from the cu
