Insulin: discovery and controversy.

During the first two decades of the 20th century, several investigators prepared extracts of pancreas that were often successful in lowering blood sugar and reducing glycosuria in test animals. However, they were unable to remove impurities, and toxic reactions prevented its use in humans with diabetes. In the spring of 1921, Frederick G. Banting, a young Ontario orthopedic surgeon, was given laboratory space by J.J.R. Macleod, the head of physiology at the University of Toronto, to investigate the function of the pancreatic islets. A student assistant, Charles Best, and an allotment of dogs w

The efforts of WHO and Pugwash to eliminate chemical and biological weapons--a memoir.

The World Health Organization and the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (Nobel Peace Prize 1995) have been involved in questions concerning chemical and biological arms since the early 1950s. This memoir reviews a number of milestones in the efforts of these organizations to achieve the elimination of these weapons through international treaties effectively monitored and enforced for adherence to their provisions. It also highlights a number of outstanding personalities who were involved in the efforts to establish and implement the two major treaties now in effect, the Biologic

A Nobel Pursuit May Not Run like Clockwork.

Living in rural Maine, Jeffrey Hall's own rhythm has been thrown upside down after he received a very unexpected call one morning on the award of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Together with Michael Rosbash and Mike Young, they were recognized "for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm." Cell editor Marta Koch caught up with Jeff on a calm Sunday morning, when electricity at his house had just returned after recent storms. Annotated excerpts from their chat about behavior, misbehavior, and the challenges and joys of working with fruit fl

Rudolph Weigl (1883-1957)--a scientist in Poland in wartime plus ratio quam vis.

Rudolph Weigl gained a high estimation for his spectacular invention of the first efficient vaccine against typhus fever. Although born a German native speaker, he changed into a great Pole with Polish education and upbringing in a patriotic atmosphere. His scientific career developed in the Universities of Lvov, Cracow and Poznan. For him, academic employment was a constant exploration of practical truths and a response to human needs, and this remained a deep obligation during his lifetime. His vaccine saved millions, particularly during World War II. Despite many nominations, he was never a

Artemisinin anti-malarial drugs in China.

Discovered by Youyou Tu, one of the 2015 Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine, together with many other Chinese scientists, artemisinin, artemether and artesunate, as well as other artemisinins, have brought the global anti-malarial treatment to a new era, saving millions of lives all around the world for the past 40 years. The discoveries of artemisinins were carried out beginning from the 1970s, a special period in China, by hundreds of scientists all together under the "whole nation" system. This article focusing on medicinal chemistry research, briefly introduced the discovery and

Helicobacter pylori research: historical insights and future directions.

Helicobacter pylori leads to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. With increasing issues of antibiotic resistance and changing epidemiology of this pathogen, new approaches are needed for effective management. In 1984, Dr Barry Marshall and Dr Robin Warren reported the association of Helicobacter pylori with peptic ulcers in The Lancet--a discovery that earned them the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005--but what progress have we made since then? Here, we have invited three international experts to give their insights into the advances in H. pylori research ov

Pioneers in Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.

"If we are not careful, we soon will be in the post-antibiotic era, and for some patients and some microbes we are already there"- Tom Friedan Antibiotics revolutionized medicine in the 20th century. The era of antibacterial chemotherapy began in 1907 with the discovery of arsphenamine, first synthesized by Alferd Bertheim and Paul Ehrlich in 1907, used to treat syphilis. The first systemically active antibiotic, Prontosil was discovered in 1933 by Gerhard Domagk, for which he was awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize. Fleming's accidental discovery and isolation of penicillin in September 1928 marked

The yellow fever vaccine: a history.

After failed attempts at producing bacteria-based vaccines, the discovery of a viral agent causing yellow fever and its isolation in monkeys opened new avenues of research. Subsequent advances were the attenuation of the virus in mice and later in tissue culture; the creation of the seed lot system to avoid spontaneous mutations; the ability to produce the vaccine on a large scale in eggs; and the removal of dangerous contaminants. An important person in the story is Max Theiler, who was Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale from 1964-67, and whose work on virus attenuation creat

Frederick G Banting (1891-1941): A Pioneer in Diabetes Treatment.

The discovery of insulin by Frederick G Banting and his colleagues in 1921 marked a pivotal moment in medical history. Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1891, Banting's childhood was impacted by the death of his closest friend, Jane, who died of diabetes mellitus at a young age. This personal tragedy profoundly influenced him to choose a career in medicine and fueled his determination to find a cure for diabetes. This journey led to the discovery of Insulin with the help of Charles H Best and John JR Macleod, resulting in a Nobel Prize for this work. Their discoveries set the stage for advancements

Christiaan Eijkman. First bacteriologist at Utrecht University, Nobel laureate for his work on vitamins.

One century ago, Christiaan Eijkman was appointed Professor of Bacteriology at the Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Despite his appointment to teach bacteriology, Christiaan Eijkman made his main contribution to medical science not in bacteriology but in nutrition. He discovered that Beri-Beri was not an infection but a nutritient deficiency (later called vitamin-deficiency) and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1929 for these observations. These landmark studies were made in the former Dutch East Indies. Interestingly, the results of his studies were presented in the Dutch langu

Monoclonal antibodies in the prehybridoma era: a brief historical perspective and personal reminiscence.

Emil von Behring, an immunologist, received the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901 for his studies on serum therapy of diphtheria. Seventeen Nobel Prizes have been awarded to scientists for their work in immunology and related disciplines. E. Metchnikoff and P. Ehrlich were pioneers who became associated with cellular and humoral theories of immunity, respectively. Almroth Wright described opsonins and was a vigorous advocate of vaccine therapy for bacterial diseases. He was an influential scientist and mentor who served as the model for Bernard Shaw's play, The Doctor's Dilem

100 Years since Robert Barany's visit to the Zaragoza medical faculty.

In December 1923, a twelve-day course took place at the University of Zaragoza, specifically at the Faculty of Medicine, given by Professor Róbert Bárány, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1914 for his discoveries on the vestibular apparatus. Professor Robert Bárány came to the faculty at the invitation of Professor Victor Fairén through the University Exchange programme. This course consisted of four lectures and twelve lessons a day in which he presented his knowledge of the physiopathology of the vestibule and cerebellum, as well as practical demonstrations of the physical exa

Homage to Rita Levi-Montalcini, the queen of modern neuroscience.

The first cell growth factor, nerve growth factor (NGF), was discovered by Rita Levi-Montalcini (RLM) in the early 1950s. Originally identified as neurite outgrowth-stimulating factor, later studies revealed that non-neuronal cells, including immune cells, endothelial cells, cardiomyocytes, pancreatic beta cells, prostate epithelial and adipose tissue cells, were also targets for and/or sources of NGF. Nerve growth factor is well recognised as mediating multiple biological phenomena, ranging from the neurotrophic through immunotrophic and epitheliotrophic to metabotrophic effects. Consequently

Why Alexis Carrel, later Nobel laureate, left France for the United States: A reappraisal.

The life of Alexis Carrel, recipient of the 1912 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, is closely linked to Lourdes and the religious tensions that marked twentieth-century France. In 1902, he traveled to Lourdes. Upon his return, his account of the cure of Marie Bailly-a twenty-three-year-old woman suffering from peritonitis according to several physicians-caused a scandal in French academic circles. His Chief of Surgery subsequently dismissed him. In 1904, he went into exile in Canada, then the United States, where he established connections with Charles Claude Guthrie, Hervey Cushing and S
