Pre-Statistical Considerations for Harmonization of Cognitive Instruments: Harmonization of ARIC, CARDIA, CHS, FHS, MESA, and NOMAS.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses of individuals' cognitive data are increasing to investigate the biomedical, lifestyle, and sociocultural factors that influence cognitive decline and dementia risk. Pre-statistical harmonization of cognitive instruments is a critical methodological step for accurate cognitive data harmonization, yet specific approaches for this process are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To describe pre-statistical harmonization of cognitive instruments for an individual-level meta-analysis in the blood pressure and cognition (BP COG) study. METHODS: We identified cognitive instruments from si

Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution and Subclinical Cerebrovascular Disease in NOMAS (the Northern Manhattan Study).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. We hypothesized that long-term exposure to air pollution would be associated with magnetic resonance imaging markers of subclinical cerebrovascular disease. METHODS: Participants were 1075 stroke-free individuals aged ≥50 years drawn from the magnetic resonance imaging subcohort of the Northern Manhattan Study who had lived at the same residence for at least 2 years before magnetic resonance imaging. Cross-sectional associations between ambient air pollution

Delay-Energy-Aware Partial Offloading and Coupled Resource Allocation in Hybrid NOMA-MEC Networks: Derivations and Reproducible Evaluation.

This paper considers priority-aware partial computation offloading in an uplink mobile edge computing (MEC) network. Devices assigned to different groups occupy orthogonal subbands, whereas devices within each group use power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation. Task-input size determines the transmitted and processed workload, while queue backlog and application urgency determine the service weight. The Gaussian multiple-access-channel rate region is convex, but the complete allocation problem is not jointly convex in the adopted variables be

A retrospective clinical, multi-center cross-sectional study to assess the severity and sequela of Noma/Cancrum oris in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Noma is a disfiguring gangrenous disease of the orofacial tissue and predominantly affects malnourished children. The tissue gangrene or necrosis starts in the mouth and eventually spreads intra-orally with the destruction of soft and hard tissues. If not controlled, the natural course of the condition leads to a perforation through the skin of the face, creating a severe cosmetic and functional defect, which often affects the mid-facial structures. Furthermore, the course of the disease is fulminating, and without timely intervention, it is fatal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retro

[Noma and Burkitt disease; a particular association about three observations seen in the Teaching Hospital Center Yalgado Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso)].

Cancrum oris is a gangrenous stomatitis arising from a periodontal infection and leading to severe soft tissue and bone destruction. The pathology involves numerous factors including local thrombosis, vascularitis, necrotizing gingivitis, immunodeficiency, Gram negative and anaerobic infection. It is usually a disease of infants and malnourished children in tropical areas often occurring after a debilitating disease like measles [3]. Burkitt lymphoma is a highly aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma first described by Burkitt in 1958 in African children from areas holoendemic for malaria. It is the

Noma affected children from Niger have distinct oral microbial communities based on high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments.

We aim to understand the microbial ecology of noma (cancrum oris), a devastating ancient illness which causes severe facial disfigurement in>140,000 malnourished children every year. The cause of noma is still elusive. A chaotic mix of microbial infection, oral hygiene and weakened immune system likely contribute to the development of oral lesions. These lesions are a plausible entry point for unidentified microorganisms that trigger gangrenous facial infections. To catalog bacteria present in noma lesions and identify candidate noma-triggering organisms, we performed a cross-sectional sequenc

'I treat it but I don't know what this disease is': a qualitative study on noma (cancrum oris) and traditional healing in northwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Noma, a neglected disease mostly affecting children, with a 90% mortality rate if untreated, is an orofacial gangrene that disintegrates the tissues of the face in <1 wk. Noma can become inactive with early stage antibiotic treatment. Traditional healers, known as mai maganin gargajiya in Hausa, play an important role in the health system and provide care to noma patients. METHODS: We conducted 12 in-depth interviews with caretakers who were looking after noma patients admitted at the Noma Children's Hospital and 15 traditional healers in their home villages in Sokoto state, north

PSMB8 as a Core Target Mediating the Anti-Hepatocellular Carci-Noma Activity of Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) Extract in HepG2 Cells.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumour with a poor prognosis and few effective treatment options. Development of resistance to conventional therapies and occurrence of severe side effects highlight the urgent need for novel, low-toxicity interventions. Natural products are promising candidates for HCC drug development thanks to their multi-target activity and favourable safety profiles. Previous studies reported that Lingonberry extract, a bioactive natural product, inhibits proliferation of HepG2 cells. However, the key molecular targets and underlying anticancer mechanis

[KAP' (Knowledge Attitude Practices) survey of the population and health professionals regarding oral health and noma in 2012 in the Sahel region, Burkina Faso].

INTRODUCTION: Noma is a significant public health concern in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. To combat this issue, stakeholders have come together to develop a project based on the actual knowledge of local populations and medical professionals about the disease. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This descriptive study examines knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to noma and oral health in the Sahel region in 2012. RESULTS: Although the population is unfamiliar with the term "noma", they generally know the symptoms. However, knowledge of the causes of poor oral health is more confused. While t

An anatomical study of the skull, the dorsal and ventral nasal conchal bullae and paranasal sinuses in normal Noma horses: Computed tomographic anatomical and morphometric findings.

Noma horses have the smallest body size among native Japanese horses and are classified as pony breeds by their size. Additionally, the Japanese horse breeds are classified into a single lineage, which includes Mongolian horses. Great intraspecific differences reportedly exist in the head shapes of domesticated horses, which have been investigated in various horse breeds. The present study aimed to evaluate the size of the nasal conchal bullae, and the paranasal sinuses of Noma horses in relation to the skull dimensions using computed tomography. Reconstructed images of the heads of five adult

Blood Pressure and Later-Life Cognition in Hispanic and White Adults (BP-COG): A Pooled Cohort Analysis of ARIC, CARDIA, CHS, FOS, MESA, and NOMAS.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic differences in cognitive decline have been reported. Whether they can be explained by differences in systolic blood pressure (SBP) is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether cumulative mean SBP levels explain differences in cognitive decline between Hispanic and White individuals. METHODS: Pooled cohort study of individual participant data from six cohorts (1971-2017). The present study reports results on SBP and cognition among Hispanic and White individuals. Outcomes were changes in global cognition (GC) (primary), executive function (EF) (secondary), and memory standard

Physiotherapy and associated factors affecting mouth opening changes in noma patients during initial hospitalization at an MSF-supported hospital in Northwest Nigeria-A retrospective cohort study.

Noma is a rapidly progressing infection of the oral cavity, which can cause the disintegration of the cheek, nose and eye, in under a week. One of the most disabling sequelae is trismus, the restriction of mouth opening, which results in difficulties in speech, mastication, social feeding habits and maintenance of oral hygiene. Restriction of mouth opening among noma patients mostly begins during the transition between World Health Organisation (WHO) stage 3 (gangrene) and stage 4 (scarring) of the disease. This study aims to describe the impact of physiotherapy in noma patients hospitalised w

Design and optimization of highly reliable cognitive non-orthogonal multiple access communication systems.

In this paper, we consider a coexisting network of cellular transmission and device-to-device (D2D) communication, in which BS wants to communicate with far user, meanwhile, a D2D source desires to transmit information to a D2D destination. However, due to heavy shadowing or severe path loss, their direct links are not available. To cope with this problem, a relay is employed to assist the involved transmission. For such a relay-assisted spectrum sharing network, two transmission schemes are designed, i.e., multiple access broadcast NOMA (M-NOMA) scheme and time division broadcast NOMA (T-NOMA
