Identifying predictors of neuropathic pain medication prescribing, adherence, and discontinuation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacoepidemiological studies show that large proportions of people with neuropathic pain are not prescribed the recommended medications, do not adhere well to these medications, and often discontinue the treatment within 6 months. Identifying what predicts these outcomes can inform a strategy to ensure that people with neuropathic pain are prescribed recommended medication and continue their treatment when appropriate. METHODS: We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify predictors of pain medication prescribing, adherence, and discontinuation in adults wit

Guideline-directed antihypertensive medication use among young adult participants with uncontrolled hypertension at enrollment in the MyHEART study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, heart failure and stroke. Lifestyle changes are recommended as first-line treatment for management of high blood pressure for young adults, when 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk score is < 10%. If lifestyle changes alone do not control blood pressure, then providers have access to four classes of first-line blood pressure lowering agents to treat hypertension, when other contra-indications are not present. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, retrospective, secondary analysis performed of the MyHEART trial on

Anxiolytic-hypnotic drugs: relationships between prescribing, abuse and suicide.

In 1978 the third largest Swedish city, Malmö, known to have the highest suicide frequency in the country, was found to have a higher prescription rate (defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 inhabitants per day) of anxiolytic-hypnotic drugs (AHD) than the country, the corresponding county, other counties, and other cities, including the largest (Stockholm) and second largest (Göteborg = Gothenburg) cities. Barbiturate prescribing in Malmö was 40% higher than in Stockholm and 90% higher than in Göteborg, and the frequency of suicide due to barbiturates was three-times higher than in Göteborg. A s

Trends Over Time in Antipsychotic Initiation at a Large Children's Health Care System.

Objectives: Antipsychotic prescribing in children and adolescents increased sharply beginning in the 1990s, but recent reports among Medicaid enrollees suggest declining trends. However, few studies have included both commercially and publicly insured patients or focused on trends in new antipsychotic medications in children without documented psychotic disorders or other indicated conditions. The objective of the study was to report trends in new antipsychotic prescribing for pediatric patients (age 3-17 years) in a large children's health care system. Methods: Data were abstracted from elect

Evaluation of Antipsychotic Reduction Efforts in Patients With Dementia in Veterans Health Administration Nursing Homes.

OBJECTIVE: The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) each created initiatives to reduce off-label use of antipsychotics in patients with dementia in nursing homes. Although CMS has reported antipsychotic reductions, the impact on prescribing of antipsychotic and other CNS-active medications in the VHA remains unclear. The authors evaluated national trends in antipsychotic and other CNS-active medication prescribing for nursing home patients with dementia in the VHA. METHODS: The study sample was all veterans with dementia residing in VHA

Trends in Co-Prescribing Opioids and Gabapentinoids Among Medicare Beneficiaries, 2017 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Co-prescribing opioids and gabapentinoids (GABA, gabapentin and pregabalin) is associated with increased risk of falls, fractures, opioid overdose and deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2016 and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019 recommended caution in such co-prescribing. A key step in updating policy and revising prescribing guidelines aimed at reducing opioid and GABA co-use and its associated consequences is a thorough understanding of the prescriber and the patient factors associated with co-use. We thus examined national trends and pat

Social prescribing within five European countries: a protocol of a cross-country qualitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing is an approach to addressing non-medical issues affecting people's health and well-being (eg, loneliness, housing or financial problems). It has gained international traction over recent years as complementary to medical care. A larger research project, comparing social prescribing across European countries, is considering how to tailor provision for the following groups: (a) LGBTIQ+persons, (b) refugees and first-generation immigrants and (c) older adults living alone. As part of this research, a qualitative study will address the question: What are the enabli

Nonsurgical Providers Provide the Majority of Postoperative Opioid Prescriptions After Hand Surgery.

Introduction The increased use of Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) websites has helped physicians to limit overlapping controlled substance prescriptions and help prevent opioid abuse. Many studies have investigated risk factors for prolonged opioid use after orthopedic surgery, but few studies have investigated who is prescribing opioids to postoperative patients. The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of medical providers prescribing opioids to hand surgery patients postoperatively. Methods Institutional Review Board approval was obtained prior to initiation of this

Non-Adherence to Antidepressant Treatment and Related Factors in a Region of Spain: A Population-Based Registry Study.

Antidepressants are a commonly prescribed psychotropic medication, and their use has increased in recent years. Medication non-adherence in patients with mental disorders is associated with worse health outcomes. A population-based registry study to assess antidepressant non-adherence during 2021 has been carried out. An indirect method based on the medication possession ratio (MPR) has been utilized. Patients with a MPR under 80% were classified as non-adherent. A multivariate logistic regression to identify non-adherence predictors has been used, considering sociodemographic (age, sex, insti

The prescribing of cardioprotective medications and the impact on survival for patients with peripheral artery disease that undergo intervention.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease guidelines recommend that patients with established peripheral artery disease (PAD) are prescribed antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, and antiplatelet medication to reduce cardiovascular ischaemic events. However, the prescribing of these medications for patients with PAD within New Zealand (NZ) remains undefined. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational cohort study of patients in the Midland region of NZ, that underwent PAD-related percutaneous and surgical intervention between 1st January 2010 and 31st December 2021. Patient level data was collected
