Humor and other communication preferences in physician-patient encounters.

In light of recent evidence suggesting the importance of communication in the health care setting, an instrument to measure communication style preferences was developed. This reliable and content-valid paper-and-pencil measure consisted of six scenarios depicting physician-patient interactions, each followed by four potential verbal responses from the physician. The four responses, representing four communications styles--humor, hostility, reassurance, and neutrality--were ranked by respondents according to their preferences. Among both physicians and consumers, reassuring responses were the

Fidgeting and first impressions: The impact of nonverbal cues on personality perception.

Fidgeting is a pervasive nonverbal behavior that occurs across diverse social contexts and populations. While prior research has explored the role of fidgeting as an indicator of internal states such as anxiety or engagement, limited research has examined how observers interpret fidgeting behaviors when forming personality impressions of others. This preregistered study investigates the impact of fidgeting on personality trait attributions using the HEXACO-PI-R. In a between-subjects design, a U.S Prolific sample of 388 participants were randomly assigned to view a short video (avg. 56.25 s) o

Using bodily postures in the treatment of anorexia nervosa: Effects of power posing on interoception and affective states.

OBJECTIVE: Power posing involves the adoption of an expansive bodily posture. This study examined whether power posing could benefit individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and women with normal weight in regards to interoceptive ability and affective states. METHOD: Participants included 50 inpatients and outpatients with AN as well as 51 normal-weight women. Interoceptive accuracy (IAcc), measured by the heartbeat tracking task and interoceptive sensibility (IS), measured by confidence ratings, were assessed at baseline, after a single power posing session and after 1 week of daily training.

Responding to Other People's Direct Gaze: Alterations in Gaze Behavior in Infants at Risk for Autism Occur on Very Short Timescales.

Atypical gaze processing has been reported in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Here we explored how infants at risk for ASD respond behaviorally to others' direct gaze. We assessed 10-month-olds with a sibling with ASD (high risk group; n = 61) and a control group (n = 18) during interaction with an adult. Eye-tracking revealed less looking at the adult in the high risk group during 300-1000 ms after the adult initiated direct gaze: a short alteration that is likely to go unnoticed by the naked eye. Data aggregated over longer segments (the traditional eye-tracking approach) show

Amygdala lesions in rhesus macaques decrease attention to threat.

Evidence from animal and human studies has suggested that the amygdala plays a role in detecting threat and in directing attention to the eyes. Nevertheless, there has been no systematic investigation of whether the amygdala specifically facilitates attention to the eyes or whether other features can also drive attention via amygdala processing. The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of amygdala lesions in rhesus monkeys on attentional capture by specific facial features, as well as gaze patterns and changes in pupil dilation during free viewing. Here we show reduced attentio

Arresting and convicting the innocent: the potential role of an "inappropriate" emotional display in the accused.

Research from both simulated and actual jurors has demonstrated that the defendant's emotional display can influence legal decisions. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the influence of the defendant's emotional display, and to consider the potential role of suspect and defendant emotion in wrongful convictions. It is possible that the lack of "appropriate" emotion during questioning or interrogation may lead investigators to create a mind-set that the suspect is the guilty party; as a result, they may be less inclined to investigate other leads. During a trial, the

How the gaze of others influences object processing.

An aspect of gaze processing, which so far has been given little attention, is the influence that intentional gaze processing can have on object processing. Converging evidence from behavioural neuroscience and developmental psychology strongly suggests that objects falling under the gaze of others acquire properties that they would not display if not looked at. Specifically, observing another person gazing at an object enriches that object of motor, affective and status properties that go beyond its chemical or physical structure. A conceptual analysis of available evidence leads to the concl

Recent developments in the application of the nonverbal learning disabilities model.

Since the original work of Myklebust et al., the concept of a syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) has undergone considerable development and expansion, most notably in the work of Rourke. These authors have proposed a model of white matter dysfunction, predominantly in the right cerebral hemisphere, which is thought to underlie the cognitive and behavioral impairments seen in individuals with NLD. Recent research has focused on assessing the applicability of Rourke's conceptualization of the NLD syndrome and the white matter model to various neurologic, neurodevelopmental, and ge

Factor structure of the Motivation Assessment Scale for persons with mental retardation.

The rating scale used to assess the motivators of maladaptive behaviors in persons with mental retardation was the Motivation Assessment Scale. In the current study, we validated the factor structure of the scale on a sample of 118 subjects with predominately severe or profound mental retardation. They exhibited deviant behaviors such as self-injurious and tantrum behavior, aggression, and passivity. The results of the factor analysis with varimax rotation validated the assumptions of the developers of the scale that the motivators could be grouped into sensory, escape, attention, and tangible

Reading the Social Clock: Analyzing Nonverbal Coordination Dynamics in Casual Chat and Conflict.

While temporal coordination of nonverbal behaviors is considered crucial for successful communication, the underlying behavioral phenomena are poorly understood, and it remains unclear how coordination dynamics adapt to different social task demands. This study explores changes in interpersonal synchrony as dyads transition from a casual getting-acquainted conversation to a hierarchical conflict resolution task. Using full-body motion capture, we compared temporal alignment patterns in movement activity, head orientation, and body posture of 66 dyads interacting in both conditions. Results sho

Early socio-communicative forms and functions in typical Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe neurological disorder characterized by a developmental regression in motor and speech-language domains. There is, however, limited research on socio-communicative development of affected children before the onset of regression. We analyzed audio-video recordings made by parents of six 9- to 12-month old girls later diagnosed with typical RTT, applying the Inventory of Potential Communicative Acts (IPCA) to identify early communicative forms and functions. Each girl used at least one communicative form (e.g., body movement, eye gaze, or vocalizations) to gain att

Neuropsychology of autism.

Childhood autism is a syndrome characterized by a triad of abnormalities in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and imaginative activity. It is clinically heterogeneous, however, and probably represents a family of syndromes, each of which is the result of a different but related type of brain dysfunction. So far, there is no direct evidence for involvement of particular brain systems, although analogies to other disorders in humans and experimental animals do allow some plausible hypotheses.

Investigation into the communication that takes place between nurses and patients during chemotherapy.

This study used the medium of videotaping to investigate the verbal and nonverbal communication that takes place between nurses and patients during chemotherapy administration. Eight chemotherapy sessions were video recorded and then analyzed for emerging themes. In addition, the videotapes were used in a reflective process with nurses. The findings showed that nurses were efficient in communicating about the physical and medical care of patients but were hesitant in exploring emotional issues. This study highlights the focus on physical symptoms and side effects by nurses in this setting. It

Effects of facial biofeedback on hypomimia, emotion recognition, and affect in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Facial expressions are a core component of emotions and nonverbal social communication. Therefore, hypomimia as secondary symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) has adverse effects like social impairment, stigmatization, under-diagnosis and under-treatment of depression, and a generally lower quality of life. Beside unspecific dopaminergic treatment, specific treatment options for hypomimia in PD are rarely investigated. This quasi-randomized controlled trial evaluated the short-term effects of facial electromyogram (EMG) based biofeedback to enhance facial expression and emotion reco
