Key stakeholders' perspectives of illicit drug use and associated harms in the Northern Territory of Australia.

BACKGROUND: In the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia, there are significant evidence gaps about illicit drug use and harms, despite having established monitoring and reporting systems. This paper reports on illicit drug use, associated harms, contributing factors, service needs and priorities in the NT from the perspective and experiences of key stakeholders engaged in providing services for, or advocating on behalf of, people who use illicit drugs in the NT. METHODS: Face-to-face and online qualitative interviews were conducted with stakeholders across urban and remote locations in the NT

Adherence to Treatment Guidelines in Heart Failure Patients in the Top End Region of Northern Territory.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and recurrent hospitalisations, particularly in the Indigenous Australians of the Northern Territory. In remote Northern Australia, the epidemiology is less clear but anecdotal evidence suggests it may be worse. In addition, some anecdotal evidence suggests that prognostic pharmacological therapy could also be underutilised. Minimal HF data exists in the remote and Indigenous settings, making this study unique. METHODS: A retrospective cohort review of pharmacological management of 99 patients from 1 January

An outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul gastroenteritis after attending a school camp in the Northern Territory, Australia.

An outbreak of salmonellosis occurred following attendance at a school camp between 5 and 8 August 2014 in a remote area of the Northern Territory, Australia. We conducted a retrospective cohort study via telephone interviews, using a structured questionnaire that recorded symptoms and exposures to foods and activities during the camp. A case was anyone with laboratory confirmed Salmonella Saintpaul infection or a clinically compatible illness after attending the camp. Environmental health officers from the Environmental Health Branch undertook an investigation and collected water and environm

Invasive group A streptococcal infection in the Northern Territory, Australia: case report and review of the literature.

The increasing incidence of invasive group A streptococcus has been well documented in the temperate climates of North America, Europe and the United Kingdom. Studies also suggest that there are high rates of invasive group A streptococcus infection within the indigenous population of Northern Australia. This review article presents the case of infant Aboriginal twins with invasive group A streptococcal infection complicated by streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, highlighting both the severity and high transmissibility of invasive group A streptococcal disease. We review the epidemiology of gr

A 17-Year Descriptive Analysis of Firework-Related Eye Injuries on Territory Day in Northern Australia.

OBJECTIVE: Territory Day is celebrated annually on 1st July in the Northern Territory, the only time and place in Australia with unrestricted access to fireworks. While fireworks contribute to the festive atmosphere, they also pose significant risks, particularly to ocular health. This study investigates the incidence, injury types, and outcomes of firework-related eye injuries on Territory Day for the last 17 years. METHODS: Retrospective case series of firework-related eye injuries from 2008 to 2024 presenting to top end hospitals on Territory Day, with 24th July used as a comparison day. D

Echinococcus granulosus in the Northern Territory, Australia: hydatid disease reported in beef cattle from the region.

Hydatid disease in beef cattle has been reported to be widespread throughout Australia, but cattle bred and raised in the Northern Territory were previously believed to be free of the disease. Between 2010 and 2016, 1061 cattle from the Northern Territory were slaughtered at a New South Wales abattoir and inspected for hydatid disease. The proportion of cattle reported infected with hydatid disease was 3.5%. Individual cattle identification numbers indicated that the cattle included in the study had most likely remained within the Northern Territory from birth until immediately prior to slaugh

Preliminary studies of the water contamination in settlements located near the uranium mining territory in Northern Kazakhstan.

Uranium mining has heightened the risk of metal and radionuclide contamination in groundwater resources. Water contamination is a significant global environmental and public health issue, with wide-ranging impacts on ecosystems and human communities. The purpose of this study is to present the preliminary results of these studies, examining the contamination levels in water sources within settlements near uranium mines. In samples of water selected from a well of Kvartsitka, total alpha and beta activity exceeds the intervention level for drinking water. Radon concentrations in groundwater fro

Case Report: Catastrophic Effects of Using Cannabis Via Bucket Bong in Top End Northern Territory of Australia.

The prevalence of cannabis usage is increasing worldwide, including among both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The long-term effects of cannabis use on the lungs are well-known. However, the acute adverse effects on the lungs are sparsely reported. There are different ways in which cannabis can be inhaled, such as smoking or through a water vaporizing method known as a "bong." An improvised innovative bong device that is commonly used in Northern Australia, called a "bucket bong," uses water and air pressure to assist in cannabis inhalation. In this report, we describe three patient

Binaural processing and phonological awareness in Australian Indigenous children from the Northern Territory: A community based study.

OBJECTIVE: Research has found that otitis media (OM) is highly prevalent in Australian Indigenous children, and repeated bouts of OM is often associated with minimal-to-moderate hearing loss. However, what is not yet clear is the extent to which OM with hearing loss impacts auditory signal processing specifically, but also binaural listening, listening in noise, and the potential impact on phonological awareness (PA) - an important, emergent literacy skill. The goal of this study was to determine whether auditory abilities, especially binaural processing, were associated with PA in children fr

Gambling, housing conditions, community contexts and child health in remote indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Recent government reports have identified gambling, along with alcohol abuse, drug abuse and pornography, as contributing to child neglect and abuse in Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory (NT). These reports also identify gaps in empirical evidence upon which to base sound policy. To address this shortfall, data from ten remote Indigenous communities was analysed to determine the relationship between gambling problems, housing conditions, community contexts and child health in indigenous communities. METHODS: Logistic regression was used to assess associations between

Anthropogenic ecological change and impacts on mosquito breeding and control strategies in salt-marshes, Northern Territory, Australia.

Darwin, in the tropical north of Australia, is subject to high numbers of mosquitoes and several mosquito-borne diseases. Many of Darwin's residential areas were built in close proximity to tidally influenced swamps, where long-term storm-water run-off from nearby residences into these swamps has led to anthropogenic induced ecological change. When natural wet-dry cycles were disrupted, bare mud-flats and mangroves were transformed into perennial fresh to brackish-water reed swamps. Reed swamps provided year-round breeding habitat for many mosquito species, such that mosquito abundance was les

Transition of pediatric patients with bronchiectasis to adult medical care in the Northern Territory: A retrospective chart audit.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiectasis is increasingly being recognized to exist in all settings with a high burden of disease seen in First Nations populations. With increasing numbers of pediatric patients with chronic illnesses surviving into adulthood, there is more awareness on examining the transition from pediatric to adult medical care services. We undertook a retrospective medical chart audit to describe what processes, timeframes, and supports were in place for the transition of young people (≥14 years) with bronchiectasis from pediatric to adult services in the Northern Territory (NT), Australi

An outbreak of leptospirosis associated with cattle workers during the wet season, in the Northern Territory of Australia, 2021.

An outbreak of leptospirosis occurred in the Top End of the Northern Territory, Australia, during the wet season in early 2021. There were 14 outbreak cases; most were male (12/14; 86%) and non-Indigenous (13/14; 93%) with a median age of 22 years (range 19-52 years). We conducted a descriptive case series to investigate the outbreak. We determined that the outbreak was most likely due to higher than usual rainfall in a workplace with exposure to cattle, heightened by wearing clothing and footwear which offered little protection, with limited use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Increas
