PURPOSE: To report a case of scleral melting noted 16 years after pterygium excision with postoperative adjuvant topical Mitomycin C (MMC).
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: A 61-year-old Malay gentleman underwent right nasal pterygium excision using bare sclera technique followed by topical MMC 0.1% for a week, 16 years ago. He was noted to have a right nasal scleral thinning with calcified plaque and granuloma. He was successfully treated conservatively without further progression of the scleral melting.
CONCLUSION: Long-term complication of pterygium excision with adjuvant topical Mitomycin

Three children, treated with dactinomycin and vincristine without radiotherapy showed hepatic toxicity consistent with diagnostic criteria for hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD). Two patients were affected with Wilms' tumor and the third with malignant fibromatosis. The clinical manifestations of VOD were mild and regressed in all patients after supportive therapy. Treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM) is briefly reviewed, available treatments are compared, and treatment guidelines are presented. The most effective strategy is treatment of the underlying malignancy. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Mitomycin C (MMC) is used in the prevention of upper airway stenosis. However, the efficacy of MMC is still debatable, and the potential complications of MMC use have been scarcely reported. We evaluated the efficacy and early complications of MMC in a wound model of the subglottis.

BACKGROUND: HCV is the main causative agent of chronic liver disease, which could progress to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. By using a recently developed genome-length HCV RNA replication reporter assay system, we found that hydroxyurea (HU), an inhibitor of DNA synthesis, inhibited HCV RNA replication.
METHODS: To test the hypothesis that HU suppresses HCV replication in humans, we conducted a Phase I trial involving Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and investigated the safety and effectiveness of a 4-week course of oral HU.

The effect of ribavirin on the growth and replication of La Crosse virus was examined. The data suggest that low concentrations of ribavirin have a marked effect on the initial steps of La Crosse virus transcription. The therapeutic potential of ribavirin in the treatment of human California encephalitis serotype infections is discussed in light of these findings.

In this investigation, xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) fibroblasts, XP12BE, were uv-irradiated and then incubated with cytosine arabinoside and hydroxyurea for 4 hr to inhibit the polymerase step of DNA excision repair. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification was used to detect cytomegalovirus (CMV) in tissue culture and in urine specimens from newborns. Synthetic oligonucleotide primer pairs were used to amplify DNA from the major immediate-early and the late antigen genes of CMV. Amplified products were detected by gel electrophoresis and by dot-blot hybridization with oligonucleotide probes.
