Sustainable healthcare education using cooperative simulation in developing nursing students' knowledge, attitude and skills: A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of sustainable healthcare education in improving nursing students' knowledge and attitudes has been demonstrated through short-term studies with pre-post test design. However, there is a need to study long-term retention of students' knowledge and attitudes, also their skills in achieving sustainable healthcare from the use to disposal of healthcare resources by providing a hands-on learning experience via simulation. AIM: This study investigated the effects of sustainable healthcare education using cooperative simulation on nursing baccalaureate students' sustai

Teaching Slow Clinical Observation Through Art: A Museum-Based Innovation in Undergraduate Nursing Education.

BACKGROUND & NEED FOR INNOVATION: Health professions education needs learning experiences that help students practise careful observation, evidence-based description, interpretive reasoning and attention to the human dimensions of illness. Undergraduate nursing education still needs clearly described, theory-informed and transferable museum-based models that move beyond cultural enrichment. GOAL OF INNOVATION: We designed a curriculum-embedded museum-based innovation for first-year nursing students. Its central contribution is a transferable sequence for slow, deliberate and dialogic observat

Beyond AI literacy to irreplaceable human capacities: What nursing education must teach in the AI era.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has prompted urgent calls for AI literacy in nursing education, yet literacy in operating AI tools is no longer a sufficient educational goal. As AI absorbs more routine cognitive and technical work, the more consequential question becomes which forms of human thinking grow more essential when AI is ubiquitous. This short communication argues that nursing education must deliberately cultivate the human capacities AI does not supply-clinical judgment, contextual interpretation, meaning-making, and, as its central focus, interdisciplinary creativity. These

Examining the factor structure of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) as a measure of victim response to the psychological pain of subtle workplace bullying.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Literature addressing victim-bully dynamics suggests that subtle bullying is prevalent in health care, both in practice and educational settings. The complex dynamics of workplace bullying complicate its assessment. The purpose was to investigate the factor structure of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) for modeling victim responses to subtle workplace bullying. METHODS: Nursing faculty members from multiple Midwestern universities (N = 116) completed the PCS online. RESULTS: The 3-factor PCS structure (i.e., Rumination, Helplessness, Magnification) developed to de

Nurse Educators' Perception of Their Role in Gun Violence Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Gun violence is a US public health concern leading to 132 deaths daily. However, little is known about nurse educators' perceived prevention responsibilities or curricular integration. PURPOSE: This study explored nurse educators' perceptions of their responsibilities related to gun violence prevention, including advocacy, research, clinical intervention, and education. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study used an anonymous online survey and snowball sampling. Nurse educators currently practicing in academic or clinical educational roles completed the 18-item Nursing

Piloting novel haptic devices for newborn simulation: Nurse practitioner and nurse simulationist perspectives and experiences.

In this study, we investigated nurse practitioner (NP) and nursing simulationist perspectives and experiences using novel wearable haptic devices for newborn simulation. This was a mixed methods pilot study including 12 participants (n = 12) at a large Southeastern university. Procedures included simulation stations where NP and nursing simulation faculty used a trainer manikin and mechanically engineered haptic devices to perceive sensations on the fingertips and hand (vibration and thermal). These devices were used to evaluate accurate assessment of simulated body temperature, femoral and br

Broadening their horizons: A rural and urban nursing student exchange program in primary care.

Educational strategies that allow students to experience patient care in both rural and urban settings are imperative to the recruitment and retention of nurses for medically underserved populations or health professional shortage areas. Two state schools of nursing (one urban-oriented and one rural-oriented) in the Mid-Atlantic region were awarded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) project funding to educate nursing students and registered nurses in community-based primary care settings. This article will discuss an innovative rural-urban baccalaureate nursing student exchange

BACKGROUND: As disasters occur with increasing frequency worldwide, enhancing the disaster response skills of nursing staff has become a crucial objective of nursing education. However, undergraduate nursing education currently lacks systematic disaster nursing training, resulting in students' inexperience and insufficient response capabilities. Therefore, it is essential to explore scientific and effective teaching methods to improve nursing students' overall disaster response competency. AIM: This study aimed to assess the current level of disaster nursing competencies among Chinese undergr

Nursing Leadership Implications for Clinical Placements in Corrections.

Clinical placements in correctional settings offer nursing students unique opportunities for learning mental health and community health concepts, including social justice, restorative justice and the impact of poverty and marginalization on health and life choices. Although there is some evidence to suggest that a small number of nursing programs use clinical placements in correctional settings, relatively little scholarly literature addresses nursing education in such settings, or the implications for nursing leadership when students do have an opportunity to learn in correctional settings.

Nursing Process Documentation and Use of Standardized Nursing Terminology (NANDA-I, NOC, NIC) in Undergraduate Nursing Students: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed-Methods Study.

INTRODUCTION: The nursing process (NP) is a framework for planning and documenting nursing care. Standardized nursing language (SNL), including NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC, supports consistent documentation and demonstrates nursing contributions to patient outcomes. Understanding students' use of NP and SNL is important for improving nursing education and care quality. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the quality of undergraduate nursing students' NP documentation, including the use of NANDA-I, NOC, and NIC, and explored perceived barriers to implementing NP and SNL in clinical practice. METHODS:

Transforming educator expectations in public health, nursing, and medicine: a two-phase survey on digital tools in education.

The digital transformation of healthcare education has accelerated significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting traditional, practice-oriented teaching towards digital methodologies. Before the pandemic, digital teaching was minimally adopted and lacked systematic strategies, especially in Germany’s higher education institutions. This study comprised two cross-sectional online surveys among university faculty in public health, nursing, and medicine—conducted in 2020 and 2021—with a total of 238 participants. The surveys explored the use of digital tools, satisfaction with digital teach
