BACKGROUND: Cashew nut allergy is increasing globally and may cause cross-allergic reactions to seed kernels from botanically related plants, including citrus.
CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her twenties with a known nut allergy developed anaphylaxis after consuming a sports drink containing citrus-derived pectin. Skin prick testing revealed reactions to the sports drink (6 mm), lemon seed (14 mm), citrus pectin (6 mm), cashew (16 mm) and pistachio (11 mm). Serum-specific IgE testing confirmed sensitisation to storage proteins in cashew and other nuts, including Ana o 3, Cor a 9, Cor a 14, Jug

Allergy to tree nuts has grown widespread among patients, specifically in the pediatric population, in recent years. In this review, we evaluate and summarize the literature specific to development and treatment of tree nut allergy. The cause of tree nut allergy, such as most food allergies, is unknown; there are theories regarding maternal dietary factors as well as sensitization related to cross-reactivity to peanut allergens. The gold standard for the diagnosis of tree nut allergy is the double-blind, placebo-controlled, oral food challenge; however, simpler and more cost-effective diagnost

Background: Tree nut (TN) allergies are the most common cause of fatal anaphylaxis and generally are ongoing food allergies throughout life. Objective: To investigate the predicting factors for TN anaphylaxis in children. Methods: Children with TN allergy were divided into anaphylactic and nonanaphylactic groups, those who had an anaphylactic reaction with at least one type of TN and those with any type of reaction other than anaphylaxis with TNs, respectively. Children with TN allergies were evaluated for the predictors of anaphylaxis by using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Result

BackgroundDespite its high prevalence, relatively little is known about the characteristics of patients with multiple tree-nut allergies.MethodsPatients (n=60, aged 4-15 years), recruited for a multiple food (tree nuts, peanut, milk, egg, soy, sesame, and wheat) oral immunotherapy (OIT) study, filled a questionnaire on their initial allergy evaluation. Medical records were reviewed. At OIT enrollment (median interval, 7.5 years), patients underwent oral food challenges (OFCs) to foods still eliminated.ResultsThere was significantly less evidence for eliminating tree nuts compared with other fo

Peanut nut and tree nut allergy are characterised by IgE mediated reactions to nut proteins. Nut allergy is a global disease. Limited epidemiological data suggest varying prevalence in different geographical areas. Primary nut allergy affects over 2% of children and 0.5% of adults in the UK. Infants with severe eczema and/or egg allergy have a higher risk of peanut allergy. Primary nut allergy presents most commonly in the first five years of life, often after the first known ingestion with typical rapid onset IgE-mediated symptoms. The clinical diagnosis of primary nut allergy can be made by

BACKGROUND: A cross-sectional, descriptive, questionnaire-based survey was conducted in Toulouse schools to determine the prevalence of food allergies among schoolchildren.
OBJECTIVES: The first goal of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of food allergies. The second goal was to determine the main characteristics of the allergies.
METHODS: The questionnaires (3500) were distributed in 150 classes in eight schools. The return rate was 77.6% (2716).
RESULTS: Of the 192 (7.0%) questionnaires with a 'Yes' response (report of a food allergy), 182 were retained as reporting true food aller

BACKGROUND: In food allergy, eliciting doses (EDs) of foods on a population level can improve risk management and labeling strategies for the food industry and regulatory authorities. Previously, data available for walnut were unsuitable to determine EDs.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine EDs for walnut allergic adults and to compare with previously established threshold data for peanut and tree nuts.
METHODS: Prospectively, adult subjects with a suspected walnut allergy underwent a low-dose double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge. Individual no observed and low

Adverse reactions to foods may sometimes cause symptoms from the respiratory tract, including bronchial obstruction and rhinitis. The true prevalence is not known. In adults, it has been estimated to be about 1% of asthmatic patients or less. This would correspond to a prevalence of about 2-4 in 10,000 of the general population. The prevalence in children is higher, as IgE mediated food allergy is more common in this age group than in adults. The most common foods causing immunologically mediated reactions include milk, egg, fish, crustaceans, nuts, wheat, soy, peanut, peas and other legumes.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for diagnosing food allergy is the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge. Diagnostic food-specific IgE levels might assist in diagnosing food allergies and circumventing the need for food challenges.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of food-specific IgE measurements for identifying symptomatic peanut, tree nut, and seed allergies and to augment what is known about the relationships among these foods.
METHODS: Patients referred for suspected peanut or tree nut allergies answered a questionnaire about their perceived foo

The allergens associated with cashew food allergy have not been well-characterized. We sought to identify the major allergens in cashew nut by performing IgE immunoblots to dissociated and reduced or nonreduced cashew protein extracts, followed by sequencing of the peptides of interest. Sera from 15 subjects with life-threatening reactions to cashews and 8 subjects who tolerate cashews but have life-threatening reactions to other tree nuts were compared. An aqueous cashew protein extract containing albumin/globulin was separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS

BACKGROUND: Several cross-reacting proteins have been identified as responsible of the co-occurrence of pollinosis and plant-derived food allergy. This association has been mainly described in the birch-apple syndrome but other pollens such as Olea europaea and other fruits may also contain homologous proteins.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between sensitization to allergens of Olea europaea pollen and confirmed plant-derived food allergy, in addition to investigate if any pattern of clinical hypersensitivity of food allergy reaction (oral allergy syndrome (OAS) or anaphylaxis) and/

BACKGROUND: Poppy seed (PS) can be a cause of severe allergic reactions, especially in individuals with concurrent allergy to tree nuts and other seeds, but diagnostic criteria and sensitization patterns are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of PS extract and individual allergens in diagnosing PS allergy and their cross-reactivities with tree nuts and buckwheat.
METHODS: Our retrospective study included 36 PS-sensitized patients; 10 with a positive and 26 with a negative oral food challenge (OFC). We identified individual PS allergens and compared the diagnostic performance of specific

BACKGROUND: Allergy to tree nuts, like hazelnuts, ranks among the most frequently observed food allergies. These allergies can start at early childhood and are, in contrast to other food allergies, not always outgrown by the patient. Tree nut allergy is frequently associated with severe reactions. Diagnosis partially relies on in vivo testing by means of a skin prick test (SPT) using commercially available SPT reagents.
METHODS: Protein and allergen composition of nine commercial SPT solutions was evaluated using standard protein detection methods and specific immunoassays for measurement of

In medical literature, there are many cases reported of anaphylaxis due to fruits, before or after allergic reactions to latex. We present two atopic patients, with allergy to latex (by clinical history, positive skin test and RAST). Both patients showed a positive skin test and RAST to fruits (banana, kiwi, avocado and chestnut), but clinically caused no symptoms.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the prevalence of walnut allergies has been increasing worldwide; however, the trends and clinical characteristics of walnut-induced anaphylaxis remain unclear. Herein, we evaluated the changes in the incidence of walnut-induced anaphylaxis and assessed patient characteristics and symptoms.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients who visited the pediatric emergency departments (ED) at three institutions due to food-induced anaphylaxis between 2011 and 2021 in Japan. Changes in the proportions of each causative food over 11 years were evaluated using th

BACKGROUND: Peanuts and tree nuts frequently cause severe allergic reactions. Nut avoidance is the key treatment, and accurate identification of nuts is essential for successful avoidance.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the age at which nut-allergic and nonallergic children can accurately identify various nuts and whether nut-allergic children can identify nuts they should avoid.
METHODS: A "nut box" was constructed containing samples of 11 common nuts and pine nuts. Nut-allergic and nonallergic children were asked to identify the nuts, and their responses were compared and correlated by age. Nut-

A patient is described with the bird-egg syndrome who experienced an anaphylactic reaction after eating some of her parrot's food (pine nuts: Pinus pinea). Specific IgE against this nut and another pine nut (P. cembra) was demonstrated by RAST. Cross-reactivity between these botanically related seeds was shown by RAST inhibition. Besides avian antigens, bird food antigens should be taken into consideration when symptoms of allergy occur on exposure to birds.
