Do we need personalized recommendations for infants at risk of developing disease?

Current nutrition recommendations, directed towards populations, are based on estimated average nutrient requirements for a target population and intend to meet the needs of most individuals within that population. They also aim at preventing common diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. For infants with specific genetic polymorphisms, e.g. some inborn errors of metabolism, adherence to current recommendations will cause disease symptoms and they need personalized nutrition recommendations. Some other monogenic polymorphisms, e.g. adult hypolactasia, are common but with

Nutrigenetic determinants of neural tube defects in India.

JUSTIFICATION: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the commonest birth defects with a high incidence in India. However, few studies have systematically looked into the etio-pathogeneis of NTDs, which mainly includes nutritional deficiencies and genetic predisposition. Efforts are afoot for universal food fortification with folic acid in the hope of preventing NTDs, without factual evidence of folate deficiency in the target population. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We conducted a review of Indian literature on NTDs focusing on the role of folate and vitamin B12 nutrition and common genetic polymorp

A nutrigenetic precision approach for the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing 3 (PNPLA3) rs738409 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is one of the major genetic determinant of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and is strongly regulated by changes in energy balance and dietary factors. We aimed to investigate the association between the PNPLA3 rs738409 SNP, nutrient intake and NAFLD severity. METHOD: PNPLA3-rs738409 SNP was genotyped in 181 patients with NAFLD who completed the EPIC Food Frequency Questionnaire. Liver steatosis was evaluated by Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) (Fibroscan

Proposing FDA consideration for the treatment and prophylaxis of opioid and psychostimulant abuse to incorporate the induction of DNA guided dopamine homeostasis: Anti-reward deficiency restoration solution (ARDS).

BACKGROUND: In face of an American opioid/psychostimulant crisis with overdose fatalities, due, in part, to the COVOD 19 pandemic, we are proposing a paradigm shift in response. Currently, The FDA has approved pharmaceuticals for the treatment of opioids, alcohol, and nicotine but not for psychostimulants or even cannabis. PROPOSITION: To respond to the deadly overdose issue globally, we are proposing that the FDA embrace, for the treatment and prophylaxis of opioid and psychostimulant abuse, induction of DNA-guided, dopamine homeostasis. We refer to this novel therapeutic target as the Anti-

Genomics in Personalized Nutrition: Can You "Eat for Your Genes"?

Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data are now quickly and inexpensively acquired, raising the prospect of creating personalized dietary recommendations based on an individual's genetic variability at multiple SNPs. However, relatively little is known about most specific gene-diet interactions, and many molecular and clinical phenotypes of interest (e.g., body mass index [BMI]) involve multiple genes. In this review, we discuss direct to consumer genetic testing (DTC-GT) and the current potential for precision nutrition based on an individual's genetic data. We review important

[Current challenges of nutrition applied research: ¿person or population?].

During the last half of the 20th century, Nutrition has evolved in a quick way based on the knowledge of both basic sciences as Biochemistry and Physiology and applied sciences as Epidemiology and Public Health. In that period the nutritional requirements for different population groups grouped by sex, age and physiological conditions have been established. However, in spite of the enormous knowledge in food and nutritional sciences, malnutrition by nutrient deficiencies (protein-energy undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies) and by excess of nutrient intake (overweight and obesity) con

Photoperiod as a neuroendocrine regulator: A review on pineal-melatonin signaling and physiological plasticity in poultry.

Photoperiod, the cyclical exposure to light and darkness, is a master regulator of neuroendocrine function in poultry, primarily via the pineal-melatonin axis. The pineal gland translates photic cues into rhythmic melatonin secretion, which synchronizes circadian and seasonal biological processes, linking environmental signals to systemic homeostasis. This review systematically explores pineal-melatonin signaling network, highlighting its pivotal role in regulating reproduction, growth, metabolic homeostasis, immune competence, and stress resilience. Mechanistically, melatonin modulates core c

Neurogenetic and epigenetic correlates of adolescent predisposition to and risk for addictive behaviors as a function of prefrontal cortex dysregulation.

As addiction professionals, we are becoming increasingly concerned about preteenagers and young adults' involvement with substance abuse as a way of relieving stress and anger. The turbulent underdeveloped central nervous system, especially in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), provides impetus to not only continue important neuroimaging studies in both human and animal models, but also to encourage preventive measures and cautions embraced by governmental and social media outlets. It is well known that before people reach their 20s, PFC development is undergoing significant changes and, as such, hi

Nutritional solutions for appetite regulation in livestock and poultry: A review.

The regulation of appetite in livestock and poultry is a complex process that involves the integration of central and peripheral physiological mechanisms. The process is regulated by nutritional, environmental, and genetic factors. This review synthesises current understanding of the neuroendocrine and gut-brain axis pathways that regulate appetite, including hypothalamic signalling via agouti-related protein (AgRP)/neuropeptide Y (NPY) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC)/cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) neurons, as well as peripheral modulation by gut hormones (e.g., ghrelin, l

The Western Diet Regulates Hippocampal Microvascular Gene Expression: An Integrated Genomic Analyses in Female Mice.

Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for dementia, and chronic consumption of a Western Diet (WD) is associated with cognitive impairment. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of microvascular disease in the memory centers of the brain are poorly understood. This pilot study investigated the nutrigenomic pathways by which the WD regulates gene expression in hippocampal brain microvessels of female mice. Five-week-old female low-density lipoprotein receptor deficient (LDL-R-/-) and C57BL/6J wild type (WT) mice were fed a chow or WD for 8 weeks. Metabolics for lipids, glucose

Evidence for acne-promoting effects of milk and other insulinotropic dairy products.

Acne vulgaris, the most common skin disease of western civilization, has evolved to an epidemic affecting more than 85% of adolescents. Acne can be regarded as an indicator disease of exaggerated insulinotropic western nutrition. Especially milk and whey protein-based products contribute to elevations of postprandial insulin and basal insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) plasma levels. It is the evolutional principle of mammalian milk to promote growth and support anabolic conditions for the neonate during the nursing period. Whey proteins are most potent inducers of glucose-dependent insulino

Precision nutrition and chronic disease: Integrating genomics, microbiome, and digital health for personalized dietary interventions.

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, account for more than 70% of global mortality and impose a disproportionate burden on low- and middle-income countries. Traditional, population-level dietary guidelines often fail to address population-level dietary guidelines often fail to account for the considerable inter-individual variability in metabolic responses to food. Personalized nutrition (PN), informed by genomics, metabolomics, gut microbiome composition, and behavioral factors, has emerged as an effectiv

The Interaction between Dietary Selenium Intake and Genetics in Determining Cancer Risk and Outcome.

There is considerable interest in the trace element selenium as a possible cancer chemopreventive dietary component, but supplementation trials have not indicated a clear benefit. Selenium is a critical component of selenium-containing proteins, or selenoproteins. Members of this protein family contain selenium in the form of selenocysteine. Selenocysteine is encoded by an in-frame UGA codon recognized as a selenocysteine codon by a regulatory element, the selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS), in the 3'-untranslated region of selenoprotein mRNAs. Epidemiological studies have implicated se
