Toxic-metabolic, nutritional, and medicinal-induced disorders of cerebellum.

The human cerebellum is composed of 2 hemispheres and a narrow medial section (vermis). Three pairs of dense fiber bundles (peduncles) connect the cerebellum to the brain. The cerebellum possesses widespread outgoing connections. Insult can result in neurologic deficits, including ataxia, hypotonia, dysarthria, and ocular motility problems. It is particularly susceptible to toxic effects of metabolic and medicinal insults. The cerebellum is potentially sensitive to alcohol, drug exposure, illicit drugs, and environmental poisons (mercury, lead, manganese, and toluene/benzene derivatives). The

Endocrine, metabolic, nutritional, and toxic disorders leading to dementia.

One of the first steps toward the correct diagnosis of dementia is to segregate out the nondegenerative dementias from possible degenerative dementias. Nondegenerative dementias could be due to traumatic, endocrine, metabolic, nutritional, toxic, infective, and immunological causes. They could also be caused by tumors, subdural hematomas, and normal pressure hydrocephalus. Many of the nondegenerative dementias occur at an earlier age and often progress quickly compared to Alzheimer's disease and other degenerative dementias. Many are treatable or preventable with simple measures. This review a

Effect of nutritional supplements on attentional-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

This study reports the effects of two nutritional products upon the severity of symptoms in children with confirmed diagnoses of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a glyconutritional product containing saccharides known to be important in healthy functioning and a phytonutritional product containing flash-dried fruits and vegetables. Seventeen ADHD children were recruited from a local parent support group. Parents of five of the subjects did not have their children on methylphenidate. Of the remaining twelve, all on methylphenidate, six were left on prescribed doses (random assig

Impact of Total Parenteral Nutrition on Gut Microbiota in Pediatric Population Suffering Intestinal Disorders.

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a life-saving therapy providing nutritional support in patients with digestive tract complications, particularly in preterm neonates due to their gut immaturity during the first postnatal weeks. Despite this, PN can also result in several gastrointestinal complications that are the cause or consequence of gut mucosal atrophy and gut microbiota dysbiosis, which may further aggravate gastrointestinal disorders. Consequently, the use of PN presents many unique challenges, notably in terms of the potential role of the gut microbiota on the functional and clinical outco

The use of enteral nutrition in the treatment of eating disorders: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Enteral nutrition (EN) is frequently used in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN), and less commonly, bulimia nervosa (BN); yet, no standardized guidelines for treatment exist at this time. The aim of this review is to investigate the efficacy of EN in the treatment of eating disorders and make recommendations for clinical practice and future research. METHODS: An exhaustive literature search of 7 databases was completed. The search strategy combined key terms anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and eating disorders with terms associated with EN. There were no restrictions on publication da

Mineral Disorders in Adult Inpatients Receiving Parenteral Nutrition. Is Older Age a Contributory Factor?

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN)-dependent adults and elderly individuals who are admitted to hospital treatment are potentially susceptible to mineral disorder complications due to depleted physiological reserves, loss of lean body mass, and increased fat mass, thus worsening inflammation. AIM: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, and hypomagnesaemia prior and within the first 7 days of PN infusion. Furthermore, whether malnutrition and old age are associated with these disorders was also investigated. METHODS: This study included a

Clinical features of hematological disorders caused by copper deficiency during long-term enteral nutrition.

OBJECTIVE: Copper deficiency has been reported to cause hematological disorders. However, its clinical and hematological characteristics are not fully understood. Therefore, we investigated bedridden patients suffering from copper deficiency and tried to clarify the clinical features of hematological disorders caused by this condition. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five patients with typical copper deficiency who had been dependent upon enteral nutrition for a long period of time due to various diseases were investigated. We measured hematological parameters and observed the response to copper supple

Perspectives: on Precision Nutrition Research in Heart, Lung, and Blood Diseases and Sleep Disorders.

The release of the 2020-2030 Strategic Plan for NIH Nutrition Research (SPNR) and its emphasis on precision nutrition has provided an opportunity to identify future nutrition research that addresses individual variability in response to diet and nutrition across the life span-including those relevant to the Strategic Vision of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The SPNR and the NHLBI's Strategic Vision were developed with extensive input from the extramural research community, and both have 4 overarching strategic goals within which are embedded several objectives for resea

Tutorial: Triheptanoin and Nutrition Management for Treatment of Long-Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAODs) experience serious morbidity and mortality despite traditional dietary management including medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)-supplemented, low-fat diets. Triheptanoin is a triglyceride oil that is broken down to acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) and propionyl-CoA, which replenishes deficient tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates. We report the complex medical and nutrition management of triheptanoin therapy initiated emergently for 3 patients with LC-FAOD. METHODS: Triheptanoin (Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, Inc, Novato,

The role of nutrition in inflammatory pilosebaceous disorders: Implication of the skin-gut axis.

Nutrition plays a critical role in the manifestation and management of inflammatory pilosebaceous disorders. There is rich potential for insight into the impact of dietary effects on the pathophysiology of inflammatory pilosebaceous disorders including acne vulgaris, hidradenitis suppurativa, rosacea, and the closely related seborrhoeic dermatitis. Acne vulgaris and hidradenitis suppurativa are thought to have similar diet-modulating pathogenic pathways. Western diet influences Acne vulgaris and hidradenitis suppurativa by increasing insulin and modulating FOX01/mTOR, resulting in over-express

Position of the American Dietetic Association: nutrition intervention in the treatment of eating disorders.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that nutrition intervention, including nutritional counseling by a registered dietitian (RD), is an essential component of team treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders (EDs) during assessment and treatment across the continuum of care. Diagnostic criteria for EDs provide important guidelines for identification and treatment. In addition, individuals may experience disordered eating that extends along a range from food restriction to partial conditions to diagnosed EDs. Understanding the rol

[Zinc and copper levels in the blood serum of infants with chronic nutrition disorders].

Zinc and copper plasma levels were investigated in infants with chronic malnutrition. Using the method of atomic absorbing spectrophotometry microelements content was assessed in 82 infants with mild degree of malnutrition. Zinc and copper levels in infants with malnutrition were significantly lower in comparison with the level of this metals in eutrophic healthy infants of the control group. It was found that the decrease of plasma zinc and copper levels related to the increase of the level of malnutrition. Selected group of children with malnutrition had a similiary low plasma levels of inve

[Pilot study on nutritional and eating disorders in children and mood disorders: comorbidity or prodromal traits?].

INTRODUCTION: Both children affected by nutritional and eating disorders (ED) and adults with bipolar disorder (BD) display symptoms of deficient emotional self-regulation, which can present in different forms. If we observe the clinical and developmental histories of individuals affected by EDs and BD, based on a cognitive systemic post-rationalist approach, we can hypothesise a continuum between the two disorders. The aim of this pilot study is to support the hypothesis - from an explanatory rather than a non-descriptive approach - that EDs and BD are the possible result of issues tied to bi

Adipose Tissue Aging and Metabolic Disorder, and the Impact of Nutritional Interventions.

Adipose tissue is the largest and most active endocrine organ, involved in regulating energy balance, glucose and lipid homeostasis and immune function. Adipose tissue aging processes are associated with brown adipose tissue whitening, white adipose tissue redistribution and ectopic deposition, resulting in an increase in age-related inflammatory factors, which then trigger a variety of metabolic syndromes, including diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Metabolic syndrome, in turn, is associated with increased inflammatory factors, all-cause mortality and cognitive impairment. There is a growing inter

The prevalence and nutritional status of adolescent Saudi girls with disordered eating.

This study on adolescents was intended to assess the prevalence of disordered eating attitudes and the nutritional status of adolescent girls in Saudi Arabia. Disordered eating attitudes and behaviour were assessed using the EAT-26. The type of eating disorder (ED) was determined using Diagnostic statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition. The nutritional status of the adolescent girls was determined by measuring their weight and height twice using standard protocols. The BMI-for-age and height-for-age were defined using WHO growth charts. Comparisons between adolescent girls with a

Liver disorders in COVID-19, nutritional approaches and the use of phytochemicals.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected millions of people globally. It was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. The hyperinflammatory response to the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the host through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 is the result of a "cytokine storm" and the high oxidative stress responsible for the associated symptomatology. Not only respiratory symptoms are reported, but gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea) and liver abnormalities (high lev

Relationships between nutritional knowledge, obesity, and sleep disorder severity.

Obstructive sleep apnea affects 20% of the adult population. Weight control is considered the best non-medical means of managing the condition, therefore improving nutritional knowledge in individuals may be an appropriate strategy. This study aimed to describe the relationship between nutritional knowledge and: (i) sleep disorder severity; (ii) body mass index; and (iii) demographic characteristics in persons suspected of obstructive sleep apnea. Nutrition knowledge scores were also compared with the general population. Consecutive newly-referred patients attending the sleep laboratory for di
