BACKGROUND: Certain events that occur in early life, such as changes in nutrition, can promote structural and functional modifications in brain development, projecting to either short, medium, and/or long terms, resulting in metabolic programming. These effects depend on the timing, intensity, and duration of exposure, and are proposed to be the cause or contribute to chronic adult disorders. Recent studies have proposed that artificial non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS), such as saccharin, can be included as one of these developmental disruptors. Saccharin consumption during pregnancy is strongly

OBJECTIVES: Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) are widely used as replacements for table sugar in beverages and dessert. However, the metabolic effects of NNS remain controversial. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various sucralose loads on glucose metabolism and expression of sweet taste receptors (STR) and glucose transporters in a high-fat diet (HFD) rats.
METHODS: Four-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats were fed a HFD for 8 weeks, then randomly divided into eight groups (6 in each group). All were gavaged with either saline, sucralose (0.54 mM or 0.78 mM), or sucrose (324 mM) wit

The use of additives to food fulfils many purposes, as shown by the index issued by the Codex Committee on Food Additives: Acids, bases and salts; Preservatives, Antioxidants and antioxidant synergists; Anticaking agents; Colours; Emulfifiers; Thickening agents; Flour-treatment agents; Extraction solvents; Carrier solvents; Flavours (synthetic); Flavour enhancers; Non-nutritive sweeteners; Processing aids; Enzyme preparations. Many additives occur naturally in foods, but this does not exclude toxicity at higher levels. Some food additives are nutrients, or even essential nutritents, e.g. NaCl.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a systemic and wide-spread disease characterized by accumulation of excess fat in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. Artificial sweeteners (ASs) or sugar substitutes are food additives that provide a sweet taste, and are also known as low-calorie or non-calorie sweeteners. Recently people consume increasingly more ASs to reduce their calorie intake. Gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem where 1014 microorganisms play several roles in host nutrition, bone mineralization, immune system regulation, xenobiotics metabolism, proliferation

Early dietary patterns can have long-term health consequences. This study describes food consumption patterns among US children ≤23 months. We used one 24 h dietary recall from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009-2014 to estimate the percentage of children ≤23 months who consumed selected food/beverage categories on any given day by age and race/Hispanic origin. Among 0 to 5 month olds, 42.9% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 37.0%, 49.1%) consumed breast milk, with non-Hispanic blacks less likely (21.2%, 95% CI: 13.2%, 32.2%) compared with non-Hispanic whites (49.0%, 95% CI

This article provides an overview for pediatricians and other health care providers of the role of added sugars (caloric sweeteners) in the diets of US children and the recent evidence linking added sugar consumption to increased obesity and other chronic disease risk in children. The hypothesized biologic mechanisms for these associations are summarized, and evidence-based strategies are provided that may help children and their families to reduce their sugar consumption. Primary health care providers play an important role in assessing the added sugar intake of their patients and in providin

'White hat bias' (WHB) (bias leading to distortion of information in the service of what may be perceived to be righteous ends) is documented through quantitative data and anecdotal evidence from the research record regarding the postulated predisposing and protective effects of nutritively sweetened beverages and breastfeeding, respectively, on obesity. Evidence of an apparent WHB is found in a degree sufficient to mislead readers. WHB bias may be conjectured to be fuelled by feelings of righteous zeal, indignation toward certain aspects of industry or other factors. Readers should beware of

This study aimed to assess how several sweeteners (white sugar, Siraitia grosvenorii fruit, mogrosides, and stevia glycoside) affected the flavor, fatty acid composition, and quality of braised pork. The findings indicated that braised meat prepared with sweeteners differed from typical braised pork. When simmered for 60 min, the typical braised pork with white granulated sugar exhibited a significant cooking loss (CL) and little water content. Significantly more than in the group containing Siraitia grosvenorii, mogroside, and stevia glycoside, the Thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) value increased

Dietary and lifestyle changes in Mexico have been linked to an increase in chronic diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. Important dietary changes such as an increase in the consumption of energy-dense foods (high in oils, animal or processed fats, and sugars) have been recently reported. The objective of this study was to identify how key dietary energy sources correlated with other indexes of cardiovascular disease in a Mexican school-age population. From 2004 to 2006, a convenience sample (n=228) of 9- to 13-year-olds, 48.2% girls and 51.8% boys, from three public urban schoo

Regular consumption of excess sugar is linked to nutrition-based diseases, including gut problems, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Increasing sweetness perception is a novel technique to decrease sugar consumption. This experiment compared the sweetness perception of sweetened and unsweetened almond milk in response to different virtual environments with music and visuals. Two music types, the classical song Goldberg Variations, BMV. 998-Variation 13 and a jazz song generated by AI were used. Additionally, fall and spring forest backgrounds were generated by th

Acesulfame‑potassium (Ace-K) is a high-intensity, non-nutritive sweetener widely used in beverages and processed foods for its stability, synergistic sweetness, and negligible caloric value. Regulatory agencies such as EFSA and JECFA have established an ADI of 0-15 mg/kg bw/day; however, emerging evidence calls for a nuanced understanding of its biological impact. This review consolidates data from in vitro, in vivo, and human studies to critically evaluate the metabolic, hepatic, neurobehavioral, pancreatic, and microbiota-related effects of Ace-K. Although human studies generally confirm its

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is increasing across South Asia, alongside a growing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases. Although countries in the region have introduced measures including taxation, nutrition labelling and restrictions in institutional settings, policies remain fragmented and implementation is uneven. Drawing on lessons from tobacco control, we propose Surveil, Protect, Offer, Warn, Enforce, and Raise (S-POWER) as an implementation framework to strengthen SSB regulation in South Asia. S-POWER brings together six complementary policy domains: surveillan

Postingestive nutrient sensing can induce food preferences. However, much less is known about the ability of postingestive signals to modulate food-seeking behaviors. Here we report a causal connection between postingestive sucrose sensing and vagus-mediated dopamine neuron activity in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), supporting food seeking. The activity of VTA dopamine neurons increases significantly after administration of intragastric sucrose, and deletion of the NMDA receptor in these neurons, which affects bursting and plasticity, abolishes lever pressing for postingestive sucrose deliv

Adolescence is a critical period, because major physical and psychologic changes occur during a very short period of time. Changes in dietary habits may induce different types of nutritional disorders and are likely to track into adulthood. The aim of this review is to describe the key findings related to nutritional status in European adolescents participating in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) study. We performed a cross-sectional study in 3528 (1845 females) adolescents aged 12.5–17.5 y. Birth weight was negatively associated with abdominal fat mass in a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Excessive intake of added sugars, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), is an important global public health concern associated with increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other non-communicable diseases. However, the health impacts of sugar consumption are influenced by broader dietary patterns, total energy intake, and overall diet quality. Although sugar plays important sensory and functional roles in food, including flavour enhancement, texture, colour development, and shelf-life extension, growing concerns regarding exces

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), a precursor of multiple myeloma, is associated with shorter lifespan and cardiac, renal, neurologic, and immune-related comorbidities. There is little known about modifiable risk factors for this condition. To determine whether the risk of MGUS is associated with dietary factors in a racially diverse population, we conducted a US population-based case-control study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-2004), which included 373 individuals with MGUS and 1406 matched controls. Diet was characterized by one 24-h

Lifestyle change is the cornerstone of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease management. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a promising target. First, SSBs are associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and interventions to reduce SSB consumption reduce the burden of liver fat.1 Second, formal guidance uniformly recommend against SSBs.2 Herein, we analyze the 2017-2018 wave of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), examining a nationally representative sample of persons without comorbidities or known liver disease to examine the associations between SSB consumption
