Systemic Glucocorticoid Use and Risk of Site-Specific Cancers: A Methodologic Systematic Review of Observational Studies.

Systemic glucocorticoids, widely prescribed for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, have long been suspected of increasing cancer risk through immunosuppressive and metabolic effects. Randomized trials are often unethical and difficult to conduct, leaving observational studies the best option to determine whether the use of systemic glucocorticoids affects cancer development. However, these studies face significant methodologic issues that may compromise the validity of their findings. We systematically reviewed observational studies published up to May 1, 2025 (PubMed, Embase, Web of Scienc

Constipation is associated with an increased risk of depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Constipation is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder that impairs quality of life and is frequently accompanied by psychological distress. Emerging evidence suggests a potential association between constipation and depression, possibly mediated by gut-brain axis dysfunction; however, epidemiological findings remain inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies examining the association between constipation and depression in the general population. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched

Prevalence of unipolar mania in bipolar I disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

AIMS: Unipolar mania (UM), defined by the occurrence of manic episodes without a history of depression, is a topic of debate within the classification of affective disorders. However, its epidemiological burden remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of UM among individuals with bipolar type I disorder (BD-I) while exploring potential sources of heterogeneity. METHODS: The study protocol was registered in Open Science Framework on 27 March 2025. Embase, MEDLINE and APA PsycInfo were searched. We included observational studies reporting data o

Epidemiology and Clinical Characteristics of Nummular Headache in Observational Studies: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Nummular headache (NH) is a rare primary headache disorder which was first described in 2002. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence and relative frequencies of clinical features of NH. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Medline, and ScienceDirect were thoroughly searched for observational studies reporting the relevant data regarding NH diagnosed in accordance with ICHD-2, ICHD-3β, ICHD-3, or Pareja's original study. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed in order to calculate the pooled prevalence estimates (PPEs) and the I2 statistics was used to measure the between-st

The association between halitosis and periodontitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systemic review and meta-analysis was to explore the association between halitosis and periodontitis in observational studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search covered PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library until August 18, 2023. Nine observational studies (585 cases, 1591 controls) were analyzed using Stata 17, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses considered halitosis assessment methods. RESULTS: The review found a positive association between halitosis and periodontitis. Significant diff

An umbrella review of adverse effects associated with antipsychotic medications: the need for complementary study designs.

Antipsychotic medications are widely prescribed in psychotic illnesses and other mental disorders. Effectiveness is well-established, particularly for reducing symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations, but can be impacted by tolerability. Adverse effects are wide-ranging, and vary between antipsychotics, which is clinically important. This umbrella review aimed to comprehensively summarise the extent and quality of evidence for adverse effects associated with antipsychotic use in people with mental disorders. We included 32 meta-analyses of randomised trials and observational studies. The

Longitudinal characterisation of cachexia in patients undergoing surgical resection for cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The complexity of the cancer cachexia phenotype has undoubtedly hindered researchers' understanding of this devastating syndrome. The presence and magnitude of host-tumour interactions are rarely considered during clinical decision-making within the current staging paradigm. Furthermore, treatment options for those patients who are identified as suffering from cancer cachexia remain extremely limited. RECENT FINDINGS: Previous attempts to characterise cachexia have largely focussed on individual surrogate disease markers, often studied across a limited timeframe. While the

Global Prevalence of Myotonic Dystrophy: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Myotonic dystrophy (DM), the most common muscular dystrophy in adults, is a group of autosomal inherited neuromuscular disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness, myotonia, and cardiac conduction abnormalities. Due to the different gene mutations, DM has been subclassified into DM type 1 (DM1) and type 2 (DM2). However, the prevalence studies on DM and its subtypes are insufficient. METHODS: The PubMed (1966-2022), MEDLINE (1950-2022), Web of Science (1864-2022), and Cochrane Library (2022) databases were searched for original research articles published in English.

Serum 25-hydoxyvitamin D concentrations in relation to Hashimoto's thyroiditis: a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of observational studies.

PURPOSE: Available evidence on the relation between vitamin D status and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) remains inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis of serum 25-hydoxyvitamin [25(OH)D] concentrations in HT, and examined how the strength of this relationship varies as a function of several moderating factors. METHODS: Twenty-six observational, case-control studies, published before Feb 20, 2018, were located using Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, LILACS and SCIELO. Study quality was assessed and random-effects models were used, along with univariate mixed-effect meta-regress

Optimizing YouTube for Medical Education: An Analysis of Popular Cardiovascular United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 Videos.

Background Electronic learning (e-learning) is an important component of medical education, improving learner engagement and satisfaction. YouTube (Google LLC, Mountain View, CA) is a widely used educational platform due to its accessibility, low cost, and variety of content delivery styles. However, viewer preferences for different content delivery styles across medical education topics remain poorly characterized. Identifying popular delivery styles by topic may inform how educators curate and recommend supplemental videos. Objective This study's objective is to describe the content delivery

Exploring the long-term hydroxychloroquine's effects on COVID-19 outcomes in patients with autoimmune diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) usage in COVID patients was a popular topic of study, especially during the first wave of the pandemic. However, the long-term impact of HCQ therapy on infected COVID-19 patients remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: Holding a PROSPERO registration (CRD42025113906), this study aimed to investigate the impact of long-term treatment with HCQ in patients with autoimmune diseases on mortality, as well as on the development of disease-related complications. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases. Full-text reports were included for clin

Breastfeeding and body composition in children: will there ever be conclusive empirical evidence for a protective effect against overweight?

An increased prevalence of childhood overweight has been observed worldwide over the past decades, which indicates the need for strategies to prevent obesity. There is some evidence that risk of obesity is primed by exposures early in life. Among other factors, breastfeeding has been hypothesized as a potential priming factor against overweight. Although the properties of human milk suggest possible mechanisms for a protective effect of breastfeeding compared with formula feeding with respect to later overweight, empirical evidence is more difficult to establish. This article reviews the avail
