Obstetricians' attitudes and opinions on sickness absence and benefits during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, sick leave is taken more frequently by pregnant women than by nonpregnant women. This led us to ask if the taking of sick leave during pregnancy could possibly be explained by attitudes to sickness absence held among obstetricians working in antenatal care. METHODS: All obstetricians (n = 45) engaged in public antenatal care and at work in May 2001 in seven hospitals in South Eastern Sweden were asked to anonymously respond to questions/statements concerning their work; 87% participated. The results were presented as percent (the median value) on a visual analog scale.

Practice patterns and attitudes toward education among Canadian obstetricians and gynecologists.

A group of 1370 specialists in obstetrics and gynecology were surveyed for information about practice patterns, continuing medical education preferences, and their perception of the adequacy of their own residency training. The overall response rate was 65.7%. More than half were in solo practice, practiced in communities of over 250,000, had been in practice for more than 10 years, or had a full or part-time appointment with a Canadian medical school. A wide range of continuing medical education methods were used. Journals were ranked highest by 41%. It is disturbing that very few physicians

Changes in the Numbers of Male and Female Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Their Implications.

Over the last 50 years, the percentage of women in medicine has more than doubled. Every medical specialty now has a critical mass of females, defined as ≥15%, and 6 specialties have greater than 50% women. Obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) has undergone an almost complete reversal of the gender makeup of the specialty and soon will have less than a critical mass of men. Certain gender-based inequities persist despite OB/GYN being majority female since 2008. Moving forward, the specialty must continue supporting women's advancement to leadership positions and recruiting male medical students

Perinatal brain damage - what the obstetrician needs to know.

Perinatal brain damage is still one of the leading contributors to perinatal death and postnatal disability worldwide. However, the term perinatal brain damage encompasses very different aetiological entities that result in an insult to the developing brain and does not differentiate between the onset, cause and severity of this insult. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), intraventricular haemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia and perinatal stroke are often listed as the major aetiologies of perinatal brain damage. They differ by type and timing of injury, neuropathological and imaging f

Chronic Abruptio Placentae With Multiple Alloantibodies: An Obstetrician's Challenge.

The current case highlights the management of abruptio placentae in pregnant women with an O Rhesus (Rh)-negative blood group with multiple alloantibodies. We describe a unique case of chronic placental separation in a young primigravida presenting with intrauterine hematoma and intrauterine fetal death (IUFD), who had an O Rhesus-negative blood group with alloimmunization against D, C, and S antigens. The implications in management were the dilemma in diagnosis, the ABO blood grouping discrepancy, multiple alloantibodies including Rh alloimmunization, chronic placental abruption with postpart

A Clinical Reference Guide on Sexual Devices for Obstetrician-Gynecologists.

In the United States, more than half of all women have used a vibrator, nearly one third of women have used a dildo, and more than three quarters of women who have sex with women have used a vibrator. Sexual devices can be used by patients with decreased libido, anorgasmia, conditions inhibiting vaginal penetration, partner erectile dysfunction, and motor or sensory disabilities. Basic knowledge of sexual devices can help obstetrician-gynecologists counsel patients about device safety, sharing, cleaning, disinfection, and material selection. Common sexual devices include vibrators, penetrative

The Obstetrician-Gynecologist's Role in Detecting, Preventing, and Treating Depression.

Women are at a higher risk for depression than are men, and this risk is especially pronounced at specific reproductive periods of vulnerability: adolescence, pregnancy, postpartum, and the menopausal transition. Obstetrician-gynecologists are often the health care providers who women consult during these vulnerable periods, usually presenting with conditions or complaints other than depression or anxiety. Presenting symptoms are frequently known comorbidities with depression or are risk factors for depression. Thus, by screening for depression and other mood disorders in these critical period

Risk-reducing salpingectomy in Canada: a survey of obstetrician-gynaecologists.

OBJECTIVE: Performing risk-reducing salpingectomy (RRS) at the time of hysterectomy or as a method of tubal ligation has been suggested as a way to reduce the incidence of high grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) of the ovary, since this type of cancer is hypothesized to originate in the fallopian tube. We conducted a survey of Canadian obstetrician-gynaecologists to better understand the uptake and knowledge of implementing this procedure, and to identify barriers to doing so. METHODS: An anonymous, web-based survey using both quantitative and qualitative methods was sent to obstetrician-gynaecolo

Obstetrician-gynecologists' beliefs about assisted reproductive technologies.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the prevalence of objections to assisted reproductive technologies among obstetrician-gynecologists. METHODS: We conducted a national probability sample mail survey of 1,800 practicing U.S. ob-gyns. Criterion variables were whether physicians object to artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. We also presented seven patient scenarios and asked respondents if they would discourage use of assisted reproductive technologies and if they would help patients access such technologies. Covariates included physician demographic and religious characteristics. RESUL

Toxoplasmosis prevention and testing in pregnancy, survey of obstetrician-gynaecologists.

Toxoplasmosis in pregnant women can lead to congenital disease with severe neurological and ocular complications in the foetus. In 2006, we surveyed US obstetrician-gynaecologists to determine their knowledge and practices about toxoplasmosis prevention and testing. Questionnaires were mailed (four mailings) to a random sample of 1200 of the 33,354 members of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Of the 1200 surveyed, 502 (42%) responded. The respondents were similar to all ACOG members by gender, region of the country and practice type (P > 0.5), and age (respondents

Obstetrician-gynecologists and the intrauterine device: a survey of attitudes and practice.

OBJECTIVE: To assess obstetrician-gynecologists' clinical use of the intrauterine device (IUD), their attitudes toward the IUD and how they select IUD candidates, and to test the hypotheses that limited residency training in IUDs, fear of litigation, and a belief that IUDs cause pelvic inflammatory disease decrease IUD use. METHODS: We performed a national mailed survey of 811 practicing obstetrician-gynecologists obtained from systematic sampling of ACOG membership listings to assess use of and attitudes toward the IUD. RESULTS: The survey response rate was 50%. Most respondents agreed that

The care of pregnant women with epilepsy--a survey of obstetricians in Scotland.

There is concern regarding the teratogenic risks of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and the effect of seizures during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy assessment and collaboration with the patient's neurologist may improve outcome. This study examined by postal questionnaire how senior obstetricians in Scotland cared for their patients with epilepsy in March 1994. One hundred and nine of 127 (86%) practising obstetricians representative of those working in both teaching and district general hospitals in Scotland responded. Only 16% of district general hospital obstetricians had an accessible epilepsy clini

[The sabbatical year of a young French gynecologist-obstetrician in 1880].

During the year 1880, a young French gynecologist travelled through European countries, mostly in England, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. He was then able to listen to the teachings and to admire the dexterity of the most famous obstetricians and gynecologists of the time. In London, Spencer Wells in his operating room was surrounded by a listerian "carbolic fog" like the Thames's dickensian one. Alfred Hegar in Freiburg-in-Brisgau advocated bilateral castration in the treatment of myomatous hemorrhage. Breisky in Prague demonstrated the technic of Porro's cesarean hysterectomy. Olshausen

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: epidemiology and significance for the obstetrician and gynecologist.

A retrovirus, variously named human T-lymphotropic virus type III or lymphadenopathy-associated virus, is now recognized as the etiologic agent of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. As of January, 1986, more than 16,000 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome have been reported, and it is estimated that greater than or equal to 1 million Americans are now infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus/lymphadenopathy-associated virus. Most cases of overt acquired immunodeficiency syndrome still fall within well-defined "high-risk groups," that is, homosexual or bisexual men, intravenou
