Disk-repositioning onlays in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disk displacement: comparison with a flat occlusal splint and with no treatment.

Sixty-three patients with an arthrographic diagnosis of disk displacement with reduction were randomly assigned to three treatment groups: (I) onlays to maintain disk repositioning, (II) flat occlusal splint, or (III) untreated controls. Guidance for construction of the disk-repositioning onlays was established during arthrography to obtain a recaptured disk position relative to the condyle. The onlays were cemented to the teeth and maintained the new intercuspal position anteriorly and inferiorly. The flat occlusal splint was used at night only and was adjusted to maintain a maximal occlusal

Effect of occlusal splint on interleukin 6, malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine levels in the synovial fluid of patients with temporomandibular disorders.

The actual role of splint therapy in preventing excessive loading of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is still debated. Lower intra-articular pressure levels have been measured in patients wearing occlusal splints, which may also reduce oxidative stress in the articular spaces. The aim of this study was to determine whether splint therapy reduces oxidative stress and inflammation in TMJ internal derangement patients by measuring interleukin 6 (IL-6), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels in the synovial fluid (SF). Twenty-four patients with a temporomandibular dis

The Drilling Guiding Templates and Pre-Bent Titanium Plates Improves the Operation Accuracy of Orthognathic Surgery With Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing Occlusal Splints for Patients With Facial Asymmetry.

Facial asymmetry is a common maxillofacial deformity which requires surgery to recover the 3-dimensional relationship of bones. The computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has been developed and applied to improve orthognathic analysis and surgery design. How to accurately realize the preoperative design of orthognathic surgery with CAD/CAM occlusal splints during operation remains a big problem. In this study, 24 consecutive patients with facial asymmetry were recruited and assigned to 2 groups. For Group A, CAD/CAM was applied to designing and producing not only the

Quantitative assessment of temporomandibular joint space in bruxers before and after occlusal splint therapy: A CBCT and MRI-based study.

Occlusal splint therapy is a widely utilized conservative intervention for managing bruxism-associated myofascial pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. A prospective observational study evaluated 112 patients using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at baseline and after six months of nocturnal splint therapy to assess osseous and soft tissue TMJ changes. Thus, occlusal splint therapy effectively promotes joint space normalization and soft tissue recovery in bruxism patients with TMJ myofascial pain, irrespective of age and gender difference
