Self-reported hand and wrist arthritis and occupation: data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey-Occupational Health Supplement.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of population-based studies examining occupational hand-wrist arthritis. We examined relationships between hand-wrist arthritis, occupation, and biomechanical exposures in the U.S. National Health Interview Survey-Occupational Health Supplement. METHODS: A randomized, multi-stage, and cross-sectional national prevalence survey was carried out. RESULTS: Self-reported, medically attended hand-wrist arthritis was common among employed persons (period prevalence 1.58%; lifetime prevalence 3.58%). Highest prevalences occurred among technicians, machine operators, as

Current status and demand projections for occupational and environmental medicine specialists: focus on special health examinations and outsourced occupational health management services.

BACKGROUND: Occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) specialists are key personnel within the occupational health system. Recent developments, such as the introduction of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and the expansion of occupational health policies targeting vulnerable workers, have highlighted the need to broaden the role of OEM specialists. This study analyzed the current workload of OEM specialists and projected their medium- to long-term demand. METHODS: The demand for OEM specialists was defined as the actual observed service utilization volume under the current legal, inst

Occupational health and safety of road haulage company employees.

BACKGROUND: This paper follows up on a project that was launched in 2008 and contributed to the development of the new Italian Society of Occupational Medicine (SIML) guidelines for the road haulage industry. OBJECTIVE: To reach a better understanding of occupational illness amongst truck drivers, in order to define appropriate health monitoring protocols and promote a healthy life-style. METHODS: We assessed 673 male drivers (mean age 43.85 years, SD 9.56; mean working seniority 27.28 years, SD 10.59), employed by 46 different companies. The drivers, who were gradually recruited in the stud

Occupational safety and health protections against Ebola virus disease.

Even as the Ebola epidemic is finally showing signs of remitting, controversy continues regarding the modes of disease transmission, the understanding of which necessarily dictates methods of prevention. The initial public health response to the epidemic was based on assumptions formed during previous outbreaks, and in the belief that transmission was restricted to direct "contact" with other infected patients. However, the current Ebola outbreak differed from previous experiences in its intensity of transmission, speed of spread, and fatality rate and was also particularly unforgiving on heal

Fungal contamination in swine: a potential occupational health threat.

Poor air quality in a pig-confinement building may potentially place farmers at higher health risk than other workers for exposure to airborne pollutants that may reach infectious levels. The aim of this study was to assess worker exposure to fungi in indoor environments in Portuguese swine buildings. Air samples from 7 swine farms were collected at a flow rate of 140 L/min, at 1 m height, onto malt extract agar supplemented with chloramphenicol (MEA). Surfaces samples of the same indoor sites were obtained by swabbing the surfaces. Samples from the floor covering were also collected from four

[Being prepared for acute poisonings in occupational health services].

Workplaces in which chemicals are used, should assess and be prepared for the risk of accidents due to the use of chemicals. The most common chemicals causing a risk of poisoning include various acids and bases, gases and vapors irritating the airways as well as systemically toxic gases and vapors such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide. Antidotes that can be given to the victim of poisoning at the workplace are available for a very limited number of industrial chemicals. First aid and treatment are therefore often symptomatic.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this exploratory study were to survey the prevalence of certain exposures and health problems among a group of veterinary nurses attending the International Veterinary Nurses' Conference in Brisbane, Australia, 2003 and to identify the main concerns among those veterinary nurses with regard to occupational health hazards they may face. METHODS AND MATERIALS: An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was distributed among all attendees of the International Veterinary Nurses' Conference 2003, Brisbane, Australia (N=147 respondents among 215 surveyed). [Indoor air quality and occupational health, past and present].

The expression "indoor pollution" of residential, office and public buildings appeared for the first time in western societies toward the end of the '60s to indicate a complex phenomenon as important to public health as that of the "outdoor air pollution" or even more so. The demonstration of the toxic effects of passive smoking, radon, and other chemical and biological pollutants present in office and residential environments has prompted a wide spectrum of research into health risks, has led to position-taking by national and international authorities, and has given rise to a new scientific

Salmon farming: occupational health in a new rural industry.

The medical hazards of salmon farming can be grouped into those related to marine safety, fish husbandry, fish-farm diving and disease treatments. The hostile water environment requires thermal protection and personal buoyancy aids as workers frequently fall in the water from boats or cages. Feedstuffs may generate respirable dust and attract rats, creating a risk of leptospirosis. Musculo-skeletal injuries are common from lifting nets. Fish-farm diving has particular risks which can be minimized. Organophosphorous pesticides are used to treat sea lice and employees require health surveillance

Thyroid health status of ammonium perchlorate workers: a cross-sectional occupational health study.

Since pharmaceutical exposures to perchlorate are known to suppress thyroid function in patients with hyperthyroidism, a study of employees at a perchlorate manufacturing plant was conducted to assess whether occupational exposure to perchlorate suppresses thyroid function. Exposure to perchlorate was assessed by measurement of ambient air concentrations of total and respirable perchlorate particles, and systemic absorption was assessed by measurement of urinary perchlorate excretion. Airborne exposures ranged from 0.004 to 167 mg total particulate perchlorate per day. Urinary perchlorate meas

Health risks related to environmental and occupational lead exposure.

Lead is a ubiquitous toxic metal. This review summarizes the toxicokinetics and toxicology of lead, and the methods to measure blood lead (BL), summarizes recently published studies, and ends with an appraisal of recent regulations to protect exposed workers. Lead exposure is caused via inhalation of lead-contaminated particulate and via gastrointestinal uptake. To assess BL, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry are commonly applied. BL in the general population has declined drastically, approaching pre-industrial levels, at least in de
