[Fitness for drivers].

Driving vehicles for transportation of people and/or goods is a high responsibility job, that exposes to several occupational risks (psychophysical tiring; health damages by weight lifting, noise, vibrations and shakings; toxic and irritative effects by atmospheric pollutants). The Italian legislation defines the minimal psychophysical requirements for the driving licence, that is indispensable to be employed. The occupational physician should then provide the sanitary surveillance and cooperate to training and education.

Evaluation of a respiratory health program for farmers and their families.

Occupational exposures to organic dusts, gases, welding fumes and agricultural chemicals result in farmers' increased risk of respiratory health problems compared to other workers. The Respiratory Health Program for Saskatchewan farmers addresses the difficulties of delivering an occupational health program to a sparsely distributed population on the Prairies. We summarized their pulmonary function and respiratory health by spirometry and questionnaire respectively. The necessity of the program was demonstrated by the frequency of lower than predicted pulmonary function tests and referrals to

Actions Reported by Physicians With Large Improvements in Burnout and Professional Fulfillment.

IMPORTANCE: Occupational distress among physicians is a highly prevalent problem that limits the effectiveness of the health care delivery system. While system change is necessary, individual physicians must also consider personal actions to mitigate occupational distress. OBJECTIVE: To identify physician actions associated with large-effect-size improvements in burnout and/or professional fulfillment over a 6-month interval. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study using a mixed-methods approach recruited US physicians from the American Medical Association Physician Data fi

Health and safety management actions to reduce the impact that medication can have on occupational risks in SMEs.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational risks and accidents are a global concern, so this analysis has been undertaken by a multitude of researchers. However, there is a limited body of research specifically addressing the influence of medication on occupational risks and, more notably, the development of measures aimed at controlling or reducing the impact that such medication may have on workplace safety and health. This scientific gap is even greater among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). METHODS: The general objective of the research presented here is to identify and explore possible health

A case study of dermatitis based on a collaborative approach between occupational physicians and industrial hygienists.

An example of interdisciplinary problem solving by occupational health professionals is presented. Approximately one dozen employees in an aircraft wire harness assembly line complained of dermatitis, alleging workplace exposures as causation. The plant's and consulting industrial hygienists prepared toxicology and exposure assessments for all process materials, manufacturing procedures, and protective equipment used. They identified no common elements in the work environment that may have caused the dermatitis, suggesting multiple causation and possible individual worker sensitivities. An inv

Improving the quality of occupational health care in Washington State: new approaches to designing community-based health care systems.

The need for concerted action to improve quality was stressed in the recent Institute of Medicine report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health Care System for the 21st Century. This article describes an innovative community-based delivery system initiative designed to improve quality and health outcomes for occupational health conditions. Known as the Occupational Health Services (OHS) project, this Washington State initiative focuses on three targeted conditions: low back sprain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fractures. To fulfill its purpose, which is to provide clinical resources and trai

Health problems and the use of health services among physicians: a review article with particular emphasis on Norwegian studies.

This paper provides an overview of recent Norwegian and international research into physicians' health problems and their use of health services, with a particular focus on more recent studies relating to The Norwegian Physicians' Survey. The review suggests that physicians' physical health is similar to the general population, although female physicians tend to be in better health than other women. Some mental disorders such as depression and suicide appear to be more prevalent. Mental health problems are known to be associated with low work control (autonomy), time pressure and demanding pat

A Case of Polytrauma in a Farmer Following a Cow Attack: "Code Farmer".

This case involves a farmer who presented to a level 1 trauma center following an attack by a cow. It highlights the emerging use of the term "code farmer" among emergency department physicians and nurses, a colloquial alert reflecting the concern that farmers may present with seemingly minor complaints that often mask more serious or insidious underlying injuries or health conditions.  The phrase "code farmer" is an emerging term gaining traction among emergency medicine physicians and nurses. It reflects a recognition that farmers often endure strenuous work environments, long hours, and a h

Emerging zoonoses: the "one health approach".

Zoonoses represent a public health risk recently pointed out by the spreading of previously unknown human infectious diseases emerging from animal reservoirs such as severe acute respiratory syndrome and avian influenza caused by H5N1-virus. These outbreaks have shown that animal breeding activities can pose a significant public health risk. Until now, the risk of zoonoses has probably been underestimated, particularly in occupational settings. The emergence or re-emergence of bacterial (Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella spp) or viral (hepatitis E virus) infections shows that zoonoses should be

'To Awaken the Medical and Hygienic Conscience of the People': Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship through Free Public Healthcare in Haiti from 1915-34.

This paper addresses the relative scholarly oversight of the history of public health in Haiti through a close examination of the colonial public health system constructed and operated by the United States (US) during its occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. More than simply documenting a neglected aspect of Caribbean history, the paper offers the US occupation of Haiti as a remarkably clear example of a failed attempt to use a free public health service to cultivate a health conscientiousness among the Haitian citizenry through the aggressive treatment of highly visible ailments such as cat

Work-life realities of doctors in Georgia and their impact on mental health and work-related well-being: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Physicians worldwide are exposed to high occupational demands, long working hours, and emotional strain, placing them at increased risk for stress, depressive symptoms, and impaired occupational well-being. However, data describing these challenges among physicians in Georgia remain limited. STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of stress and depressive symptoms among physicians in Georgia across medical specialties and to examine their associations with selected work-related and psychosocial well-being indicators, including emotional well-being, work satisfac

Clinical evaluation of patients with complaints related to formaldehyde exposure.

Formaldehyde is a very widely used chemical in our present society and one with which every physician has had a first-hand experience in his early days of training in the anatomy laboratory. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health lists 52 occupations that expose people to formaldehyde. In recent years, however, the increasing use of formaldehyde resins in the production of building materials such as particleboard and urea-formaldehyde foam insulation has resulted in exposures of large numbers of people in nonoccupational settings. Consumer products such as cosmetics, cigarett

The experience of an occupational health centre during a prolonged work stoppage.

We describe the experience of the occupational health centre at the Sarnia Division of Dow Chemical Canada prior to, during and after a work stoppage of seven months duration. A descriptive analysis was performed of the occupational health case load during the work stoppage compared to the same period one year earlier. Total visits as well as those for dermatologic, upper respiratory, musculoskeletal and those associated with a non-occupationally related situation (e.g., sunburn) exceeded normal frequencies during the first ten weeks of the work stoppage. In particular, there was a peak number

Occupational Exposure to Human Papillomavirus and Vaccination for Health Care Workers.

Multiple studies suggest that health care workers treating human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated conditions may experience occupational exposure to the virus. Case reports describe the development of cancer and other disease in health care professionals at low risk for such conditions except for their work. Despite limited data, vaccination can be a safe and effective method to reduce this uncertain risk. We argue that health care workers, including physicians, nurses, and others, who participate in the treatment of HPV-associated disease should consider vaccination.

Suicidal ideation among non-physician hospital system staff: Prevalence and workplace correlates.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that healthcare workers are at greater risk for suicide than other occupations, but most published studies focus on physicians. This study examines the prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) and associated occupational factors among a broad group of non-physician healthcare staff. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was sent to a random sample of 30 % of non-physician healthcare staff at a large urban healthcare system between September and November 2022. Weighted multivariable binary logistic regressions were conducted to determine the workplace and mental health

Women Physicians and Nurses in Treatment for Substance Use Disorders: Commonalities and Disparities by Profession.

Women physicians and nurses are health professionals with significant differences in their role, but they share common social and occupational stressors. This study compares the outcomes of female physicians and nurses in treatment in a highly specialized program for health professionals with substance use disorders. This was a 9-year, survival, observational, cohort study, conducted with data from medical e-records of female nurses (n = 58) and physicians (n = 50) in treatment for addictions. The most common drug of abuse was alcohol (62% of physicians and 75.9% of nurses) followed by sedativ

Effect of a two-hour training on physicians' skill in interpreting Pneumoconiotic chest radiographs.

OBJECTIVE: Occupational lung diseases have specific radiographic manifestations not always well known by physicians. In Japan, asbestos-related diseases became a public health concern after the "Kubota Shock", when a number of workers and residents living nearby a manufacturer of asbestos-made ducts developed mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure. This preliminary intervention trial evaluated the effect of two-hour training on inexperienced physicians' skill in interpreting pneumoconiotic chest radiographs. METHODS: One hundred-two Japanese physicians participated in two reading-tests, usi
