Chronic occupational stress exposure may increase the vulnerability to acoustic trauma in military professionals.

UNLABELLED: Today little is known about the connection between chronic stress exposure and hearing loss. These effects cannot be explained by differences in HPA axis response but recent studies saying that chronic stress induced limbic system alterations spread to nonlimbic areas affecting auditory system might be the key. On the other hand we know that subjects exposed to chronic stress may prove hypersensitivity to novel stressors. The aim of this study is to confirm that occupational chronic stress (OCS) exposure determines vulnerability to acoustic trauma and to establish a method to ident

Occupational stress and epigenetic regulation: methylation of the glucocorticoid receptor gene promoter in depressed workers.

Epigenetic changes affecting genes in the glucocorticoid pathway have been studied as biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD). The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene promoter methylation levels in depressed workers exposed to occupational stress. Nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 (NR3C1) promoter methylation levels were measured by methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting (MS-HRM) in 70 patients with MDD and 40 healthy controls. Occupational stress was evaluated in patients and controls using the Job Content Questionnaire

Coaching impact on work-family conflict and occupational stress among educational administrators in primary schools.

BACKGROUND: Many workers in developing countries have complained about poor working conditions, unhappiness, and job insecurity. As a result, irrationality in employees judgments of the dissatisfactory status of Nigerian organizational environments has been linked to deviant public employee behavior. Apparently, workers in this work environment experience job-induced hazards and distorted feelings about their occupational well-being. With that in mind, we evaluated the impact of rational-emotive occupational health coaching on work-life quality and occupational stress management among educatio

MRS Shows Regionally Increased Glutamate Levels among Patients with Exhaustion Syndrome Due to Occupational Stress.

Despite the rapid increase of reports of exhaustion syndrome (ES) due to daily occupational stress, the mechanisms underlying ES are unknown. We used voxel-based 1H-MR spectroscopy to examine the potential role of glutamate in this condition. The levels of glutamate were found to be elevated among ES patients (n = 30, 16 females) compared with controls (n = 31, 15 females). Notably, this increase was detected only in the anterior cingulate and mesial prefrontal cortex (ACC/mPFC), and the glutamate levels were linearly correlated with the degree of perceived stress. Furthermore, there was a sex

Leadership styles and occupational stress among college athletic directors: the moderating effect of program goals.

The interaction between an individual's abilities and the perceived demands of the workplace appears to make a unique contribution to job-related stress above and beyond that of dispositional or situational factors alone (R. S. Lazarus, 1990). In the present study, the author evaluated this contention among 245 male intercollegiate athletic directors by assessing the combined influence of leadership style and program goals on occupational stress. Regression analyses revealed the presence of both significant main effects and interaction effects of leadership style and program goals in the predi

Recalibrating occupational stress and well-being: Junior high school teachers' retrospective accounts of mindfulness training.

Quantitative research has reported associations between mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and teacher stress and well-being, but less is known about how teachers themselves retrospectively experience and make sense of learning mindfulness. This interpretative phenomenological study examined eight Chinese junior high school teachers' retrospective accounts following a four-week standardized mindfulness program. Participants described an initial struggle with a "busy mind" and physical discomfort, followed in some accounts by a more noticeable capacity to pause before responding to classroo
