Occupational Therapy in the Treatment of Early Psychosis: a Scoping Review.

Extensive literature documents the benefits of intervening early for psychosis and for using interventions to support individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis. Occupational therapy (OT) is used in the treatment of early psychosis, yet the specific role of OT within these multidisciplinary teams remains underexplored. By mapping existing evidence, this scoping review aims to present the evidence related to the inclusion of OT in early intervention for psychosis. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in November 2020. Three authors independently screened titles, abstracts,

Quality of Occupational Therapy Research in India - A Descriptive Review.

BACKGROUND: Occupational therapy (OT) enhances functional independence in the daily activities of people with disabilities and subsequently their quality of life. Research in OT generates evidence to provide safe and effective services to the disabled. However, OT research in India has been shown to have various methodological limitations. These methodological limitations are expected to impact the quality of OT research as well as the evidence derived from this research to inform decision-making in rehabilitation. The majority of the OT research is disseminated and promoted through the All In

Use of creative activities in occupational therapy practice in Sweden.

The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of creative activities in occupational therapy in Sweden and how often Swedish occupational therapists use creative activities as a means of intervention. A web-mail survey was sent to 2975 Swedish occupational therapists working in health care at regional, county council or primary health care level, and those working in vocational rehabilitation. A total of 1867 (63%) answered the questionnaire and showed that 44% did use creative activities as a means of intervention and most often by practitioners working in psychiatric health care. The

A systematic review of occupational therapy interventions with homeless people.

ABSTRACT A systematic review of the occupational therapy literature 1990-2008 was undertaken with the aim to assess the quality of evidence that supports the role of occupational therapy with homeless people. Forty articles were initially identified and critically appraised, including 16 research studies. Seven quantitative articles were included in this review and demonstrated the effectiveness of occupational therapy in providing interventions that increase employment and education prospects, money management, coping skills, and leisure activities. The literature suggests that occupational t

Occupational therapy's link to vocational reeducation, 1910-1925.

The development of occupational therapy is rooted in early 20th century medical reform. During the early 1910s, several members of the medical profession, human service workers, and the larger American society were increasingly disturbed by medical practices that did not consider the individual's personal experience of disability. Occupational therapy was developed, in part, out of this desire to provide persons with treatment that helped them to function in their communities despite their disability. Early occupational therapy leaders envisioned the fledgling profession as a societal service

[The effectiveness of ambulatory occupational therapy measures for patients with schizophrenia].

This study evaluates the concept of occupational therapy for schizophrenic outpatients. Preliminary results from 18 patients suggest that occupational therapy for outpatients might contribute to an improvement in cognitive-adaptive functions and open up ways for further integration on the job market. The prognosis was favourable when the outset of occupational therapy was not equated with a rise in the level of professional adaptation and a certain approachability and flexibility were to be observed in cognitive, affective and intentional aspects among the chronic schizophrenic patients. With

School-Based Occupational Therapy in MTSS: A Call to Action.

School-based occupational therapy practitioners (SBOTPs) are called to move beyond reactive services for students with identified disabilities and contribute to preventive, inclusive supports for all learners. The Every Student Succeeds Act and the adoption of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) create a timely opportunity for SBOTPs to expand their role as Specialized Instructional Support Personnel within school-wide systems. However, current implementation remains limited by conceptual confusion, inconsistent definitions of MTSS tiers, insufficient data collection and progress monitoring

The Crucial Need for Occupational Therapy to Prioritize Postsecondary Transition.

Recent federal initiatives demonstrate that improving adult outcomes for youth with disabilities is a high priority for the United States. The U.S. Office of Special Education Programs launched a new initiative in May 2023 to improve postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities titled "Expect, Engage, Empower: Successful Transitions for All!" In addition, recent funding initiatives have allocated millions of federal dollars to improving postschool outcomes for youth with disabilities. Occupational therapy practitioners must be aware of these initiatives and the implications they have
