The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare lesion of the jaws. It accounts for about 1% of all odontogenic tumors. The CEOT occurs primarily in the molar-premolar region of the mandible, and 52% of cases are associated with an unerupted tooth. This report describes an unusual case in a 37-year-old woman. The tumor arose in the molar area of the right mandible, appeared radiographically as a radiolucent lesion, and was thought to be a dentigerous cyst in association with an impacted first molar. The lesion was enucleated. Microscopic examination showed it to be a dental sac, w

Pindborg tumor or calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm. The average age at diagnosis is 40 years without a significant prevalence for one sex. The most frequent localization is the mandibular premolar and molar area; less frequently the lesion is found in the maxilla, while other localizations like the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. Ethiology of this lesion is not clear. The complete surgical removal of the lesion is usually considered the most common type of treatment. The authors report a peculiar case of Pindborg tumor characterized by a rare localization o

The acetylation of histones H2A on lysine 5 (H2AacK5) and H3 on lysine 27 (H3AcK27) modulate several cellular mechanisms through the p300 enzyme in pathological lesions; however, their role in odontogenic lesions has not been addressed. This study aims to evaluate the immunoexpression of p300, H2AacK5, and H3AcK27 in samples of ameloblastoma (AMB) (n = 30), odontogenic keratocyst (OK) (n = 15), adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) (n = 10), odontogenic fibroma (OF) (n = 8), calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) (n = 8), odontogenic myxoma (MIX) (n = 10), and ameloblastic fibroma (AF) (n = 06). BACKGROUND: Cysts of the jaws (JCs) are an important topic of oral pathology, but few epidemiological data are present in the literature, in particular about the potential of recurrence. The aim of this study was to describe a case series of JCs from a single institution, evaluating the frequency, the site, the age distribution, and the percentage of recurrence of all types of JCs.
METHODS: All JCs present in the histological records of the Section of Anatomic Pathology of the University of Bologna at Bellaria Hospital from 1992 to 2012 were retrieved.
RESULTS: A total of 1136 jaws cysts wer

BACKGROUND: Since there are many differential diagnoses for cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD), it is very difficult for dentists to avoid misdiagnosis. In particular, if COD is related to an embedded tooth, differential diagnosis is difficult. However, there have been no reports on the characteristics of the imaging findings of COD associated with embedded teeth. The aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence and imaging characteristics of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) associated with embedded teeth, in order to appropriately diagnose COD with embedded teeth.

The calcifying odontogenic cystic tumor (CCOT) is a benign lesion of odontogenic origin characterized by an ameloblastoma-like epithelium with ghost cells that may calcify. Despite broadly considered as a cyst, some investigators prefer to classify it as a neoplasm. Clinically, it occurs predominantly during the third decade of life. No difference in gender prevalence has been observed nor predilection of the lesion between maxilla and mandible. The most affected region extends from the incisor tooth to bicuspids. The classic treatment of the lesion is full excision, although a different appro

BACKGROUND: Treatment modalities of odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaws range from conservative to radical. "Dredging" may be considered the "middle path" between conservative and radical treatment options. It comprises three entities-decompression, followed by repeated scraping of the lesion, and finally, peripheral ostectomy providing margin clearance but without significant morbidity.
AIM: To evaluate the outcome of "dredging" in the management of large cystic lesions of the jaws, without major resections and maintaining normal functions.
METHODOLOGY: This prospective study was conduct

The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) simultaneously occurring with other lesions at different locations in the same patient is rare. We report a patient with CCOT associated with an odontoma, a supernumerary tooth, and a dentigerous cyst simultaneously occurring in the maxilla. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images showed a well-defined expansile lesion with internal calcification, high-density masses surrounded by low-density area, and a supernumerary tooth at the anterior maxilla. Posterolaterally to these lesions, an embedded canine with pericoronal radiolucency was detected

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign epithelial mixed odontogenic tumor. It occurs as an intraosseous lesion, generally asymptomatic and more prevalent in children and adolescent. AFO is found on radiographic evaluation of patients with unerupted or impacted teeth in many cases. Histological examination reveals a fibrous soft tissue, islands of odontogenic epithelium and a disordered mixture of dental tissues. The treatment modality in most cases involves conservative surgery with enucleation. We present a case of 13-year-old boy with a missing right central incisor, mimicking-l

Notch signaling is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism that enables adjacent cells to adopt different fates. Ghost cells (GCs) are anucleate cells with homogeneous pale eosinophilic cytoplasm and very pale to clear central areas (previous nucleus sites). Although GCs are present in a variety of odontogenic lesions notably the calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT), their nature and process of formation remains elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Notch signaling in the cell fate specification of GCs in CCOT. Immunohistochemical staining for four Notch receptors (

The advances in molecular technologies have allowed a better understanding of the molecular basis of odontogenic cysts and tumours. PTCH1 mutations have been reported in a high proportion of odontogenic keratocyst. BRAF p.V600E are recurrent in ameloblastoma and KRAS p.G12V/R in adenomatoid odontogenic tumour, dysregulating the MAPK/ERK pathway. Notably, BRAF p.V600E is also detected in ameloblastic carcinoma, but at a lower frequency than in its benign counterpart ameloblastoma. Recently, adenoid ameloblastoma has been shown to be BRAF wild-type and to harbour CTNNB1 (β-catenin gene) mutation

We report the case of a fit and well pregnant patient in her 20s who presented with a progressively expansile swelling of the left maxilla. Despite extraction of the presumed causative tooth, the lesion continued to enlarge, extending to the orbital floor and resulting in infraorbital nerve paraesthesia. Post-partum radiological imaging demonstrated a markedly displaced upper left third molar associated with a large lytic lesion obliterating the left maxillary sinus. Differential diagnoses included a dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma or malignancy.Surgical enucleation of the lesion with removal

A radicular cyst associated with carious teeth is a very common odontogenic lesion in the oral cavity, but calcifications in residual radicular cysts are quite rare. We report one such case where a routine pre-implant radiographic assessment revealed a mixed periapical radiopaque radiolucent lesion in the right maxillary central incisor region. Histological and radiographic studies show that there is a slow increase in the mineralized deposits within the cyst lumen with time. This becomes prominent histochemically in cysts more than 8 years old and radiographically 6 years later, as seen in ou

AIM: The present study aimed to contribute to the biological characterization of odontogenic ghost cell lesions (OGCL).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine OGCL consisting of 60 calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) and nine dentinogenic ghost cell tumors (DGCT) were collected from a single center over a period of 63 years. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathological features were re-evaluated. Histochemical and immunohistochemical studies were performed in 37 COC and three DGCT. Molecular studies were performed in 17 COC to identify possible CTNNB1 gene mutations.
RESULTS: COC was more fre

The group of benign epithelial odontogenic tumors consists of the four member types of the ameloblastoma family (solid/multicystic, extraosseous/peripheral, desmoplastic, unicystic), squamous odontogenic tumors, calcifying odontogenic tumors, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors, the former "keratocysts" that were recently reclassified by the World Health Organization and are now regarded as tumors. The latter are by far the most frequent tumors in this group, followed by solid/multicystic ameloblastoma. Although the etiology of these lesions is still unknown, a

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aims to evaluate the relative representation of individual types of developmental odontogenic cysts (DOCs), especially from the perspective of syndromic and non-syndromic multiple DOCs in the Czech population. In addition, we also summarize the previous studies on the occurrence of multiple DOCs and provide a literature review of case reports and case series on non-syndromic multiple DOCs, particularly dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs).
METHODS: The study included histologically confirmed DOCs retrieved between January 1, 2012, and
