The influence of speed, grade and mass during simulated off road bicycling.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of bicycle mass, speed, and grade on oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) during a simulated off-road riding paradigm. Nine adult subjects with mean +/- SD age, mass, and VO2 max of 26.1 +/- 5.6 years, 71.7 +/- 7.5 kg, 56.6 +/- 5.2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) respectively, were trained to ride a fully suspended Trek Y-22 mountain bike on a treadmill with a 3.8 cm bump affixed to the belt. Riders completed a maximum of nine separate trials encompassing three different bike masses (11.6, 12.6 and

[Lung cancer as a scar tumor: apropos a case and the possible etiopathogenetic mechanisms].

The true existence of "scar tumors" is still being argued. A case of a 30 years old patient with an adenocarcinoma of the lung which grew on a scar secondary to a motorbike accident that happened 15 years earlier is here presented. The age of the patient, the pathology of the tumor, the radiological demonstration of the tumor progressively growing on and around a preexistent scar, as well as the long period of time that elapsed in between the initial etiological factor and the final diagnosis leave very few doubts about the "scar" origin of this neoplasia. Previously undescribed and possible e

Drinking, substance use and the operation of motor vehicles by young adolescents in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Impaired driving is a recognized cause of major injury. Contemporary data are lacking on exposures to impaired driving behaviours and related injury among young adolescents, as well as inequities in these youth risk behaviours. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Cycle 6 (2009/10) of the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children survey involved 26,078 students enrolled in 436 Canadian schools. We profiled cross-sectionally the reported use of alcohol, marijuana, or other illicit drugs by on-road and off-road vehicle operators when young adolescents (mean age 13.3 (± 1.6) years) were either drivi

Study on the risk assessment of Pedestrian-Vehicle conflicts in channelized Right-Turn lanes based on the Hierarchical-Grey Entropy-Cloud model.

Channelized right-turn lanes (CRTLs) in urban areas have been effective in improving the efficiency of right-turning vehicles but have also presented negative impacts on pedestrian movement. Pedestrians experience confusion regarding the allocation of road space when crossing crosswalks within these areas, leading to frequent conflicts between pedestrians and motor vehicles. In this paper, considering the characteristics of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at channelized right-turn lanes as well as the ambiguity and uncertainty of the causes, a comprehensive assignment combined with a cloud model

Is it safe for children to ride youth-sized all-terrain vehicles?

INTRODUCTION: All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) contribute significantly to fatalities and injuries among young individuals. This is despite the availability of youth-sized ATVs in the market, suggesting that these vehicles may not be as suitable for young riders as their name implies. This study aims to assess the suitability of youth-sized ATVs for their intended demographic. METHOD: Five youth-sized ATV models from the most common manufacturers across various age groups were evaluated for mismatches between vehicle riding requirements and the physical capabilities of youth. Our assessment includ

Limitations in the field of vision of young operators of utility all-terrain vehicles.

PROBLEM: All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) cause a distressing number of fatalities and injuries among farm youth in the United States. The number of severe injuries caused by ATV crashes on farms, which stood at 25 children in 2019, is expected to rise due to increased ATV sales during the COVID-19 pandemic. Existing research into children's injuries has explored physical capabilities like anthropometry, strength, and visual acuity. Yet, studies assessing youths' physical ability to operate ATVs remain limited. This study tests the hypothesis that diminished vision field in young ATV operators rais

A Comprehensive Report on All-Terrain Vehicles and Youth: Continuing Challenges for Injury Prevention.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) represent a serious and ongoing public health and safety concern for children and adolescents. Survey studies indicate that high proportions of youth ride ATVs in both rural and nonrural populations. The significant human and economic costs of pediatric ATV-related deaths and injuries result from a number of major risk factors that are highly common in pediatric ATV crashes: operating adult-size vehicles, riding with or as passengers, lack of protective equipment, and riding on public roads. Other less well-studied but potentially significant risk factors are speed,

All-Terrain Vehicle Injury in Children and Youth: Examining Current Knowledge and Future Needs.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries remain a large public health problem in the United States and disproportionately affect American youth. Although children account for only 14-18% of ATV riders, they comprise 37-57% of those injured in ATV-related accidents. Since the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission began collecting data in 1982, 23% of ATV-related deaths have occurred in children. OBJECTIVE: With this review, we outline the major risk factors for injuries among young ATV riders in the United States and suggest research-based interventions to successfully modify s

Ventilatory Cycle Measurements and Loop Gain in Central Apnea in Mining Drivers Exposed to Intermittent Altitude.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: By measuring the apnea length, ventilatory phase, respiratory cycle length, and loop gain, we can further characterize the central apneas of high altitude (CAHA). METHODS: Sixty-three drivers of all-terrain vehicles, working in a Peruvian mine located at 2,020 meters above sea level (MASL), were evaluated. A respiratory polygraph was performed in the first night they slept at high altitude. None of the subjects were exposed to oxygen during the test or acetazolamide in the preceding days of the test. RESULTS: Sixty-three respiratory polygraphs were performed, and 59 were co

An image-based method to measure all-terrain vehicle dimensions for engineering safety purposes.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes are a serious public health and safety concern. Engineering approaches that address ATV injury prevention are critically needed. Avenues to pursue include evidence-based seat design that decreases risky behaviours, such as carrying passengers and operation of adult-size vehicles by children. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to create and validate an image-based method to measure ATV seat length and placement. METHODS: Publicly available ATV images were downloaded. Adobe Photoshop was then used to generate a vertical grid through the centre

Evaluation of a radar-based proximity warning system for off-highway dump trucks.

A radar-based proximity warning system was evaluated by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to determine if the system would be effective in detecting objects in the blind spots of an off-highway dump truck. An average of five fatalities occur each year in surface mines as a result of an equipment operator not being aware of a smaller vehicle, person or change in terrain near the equipment. Sensor technology that can detect such obstacles and that also is designed for surface mining applications is rare. Researchers worked

The effect of a community-based police surveillance program on snowmobile injuries and deaths.

Serious snowmobile injuries are preventable and associated with late-night travel, alcohol use, and speed. We studied the effectiveness of a community-based policing (STOP) program in the prevention of serious injuries related to snowmobile trauma in Sudbury, Ontario. Volunteers were trained in police protocol and were appointed special constables to increase policing on snowmobile trails from 1993-95. Snowmobile admissions and deaths in Sudbury were examined; the pre- (1990-1992) and post- (1993-1995) STOP seasons were compared. In the pre-STOP period, 102 injuries, 87 admissions, and 15 deat

Snowmobile driving and symptoms of the locomotive organs.

The role of snowmobile driving as a factor in symptoms of the locomotive organs was examined in 1,793 reindeer herding men using a postal questionnaire. Thirty-eight % of the respondents reported troubles in the upper limbs and shoulders which according to their own judgement were caused by snowmobile driving, and 34% reported such symptoms in the knees and 42% in the back. Aching, pain or tenderness upon movement in at least one joint during the current year, inquired by independent questions, were reported by 46% of the men. The prevalence of joint symptoms felt in the elbow (reported by 15%

England-wide injury-severity analysis of e-scooter riders using a Bayesian spatial field model.

As electric scooter (e-scooter) use has expanded, understanding the factors associated with e-scooter rider injury severity has become increasingly important for road safety policy. This study analyses 2,128 crashes involving e-scooters and motor vehicles across England (2020-2023) to identify factors associated with severe and fatal injuries to e-scooter riders. Using the geographic coordinates of crashes, we developed a Bayesian spatial field model implemented via the Stochastic Partial Differential Equation (SPDE) approach for fast Bayesian estimation. Our approach accounts for spatial unob

Clear zone or W-beam guardrail for rural highways? A Full Bayes before-after evaluation by employing the Poisson Gamma-Lindley model.

Run-off-road crashes often result in fatal and severe injuries on rural highways. Clear zones and W-beam guardrails are often installed to reduce run-off-road crashes and the extent of severe injuries. While the effectiveness of clear zone improvement and W-beams has been studied, their comparative effects in a similar empirical setting are not well known. At the same time, crashes on rural highways are often characterized by a high frequency of zero counts; however, models capable of addressing this issue-such as the Poisson-Gamma Lindley models-have not yet been tested in before-after evalua

Do All-terrain or Recreational Off-highway Vehicle Crashes Have a Higher Odds of Amputation?

BACKGROUND: Riding off-road vehicles is associated with the risk of injury to the extremities. There are two main types of four-wheel recreational off-road vehicles: quads or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), which are essentially four-wheel off-road motorcycles, and recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs), also colloquially referred to as utility terrain vehicles, which have side-by-side seating, higher maximum speeds, and a roll cage. There are multiple orthopaedic society position statements on ATVs, but none on ROVs. Perhaps this is because the injury patterns and differences between the two v
