Performance Assessment of Five Different Soil Moisture Sensors under Irrigated Field Conditions in Oklahoma.

Meeting the ever-increasing global food, feed, and fiber demands while conserving the quantity and quality of limited agricultural water resources and maintaining the sustainability of irrigated agriculture requires optimizing irrigation management using advanced technologies such as soil moisture sensors. In this study, the performance of five different soil moisture sensors was evaluated for their accuracy in two irrigated cropping systems, one each in central and southwest Oklahoma, with variable levels of soil salinity and clay content. With factory calibrations, three of the sensors had s

Racial misclassification of American Indians in Oklahoma State surveillance data for sexually transmitted diseases.

The burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is high in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. In addition, race is often misclassified in surveillance data. This study examined potential racial misclassification of American Indians in STD surveillance data in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State STD surveillance data for 1995 were matched with the Oklahoma State Indian Health Service Patient Registry to determine the number of AI/AN women who had one of three STDs but were not listed in Oklahoma surveillance data as AI/AN. Accounting for racial misclassification increased the rate of ch

Traumatic reactions as predictors of posttraumatic stress six months after the Oklahoma City bombing.

OBJECTIVE: This study attempted to identify remembered reactions of Oklahoma City residents at the time of the April 1995 terrorist bombing that predicted later development of posttraumatic stress symptoms. METHODS: Eighty-six adults who sought help for distress related to the bombing six months after it occurred completed a survey about demographic characteristics, level of exposure to the event, symptoms of grief, retrospective reports of reactions at the time of the trauma, current posttraumatic stress symptoms, and coping strategies. To identify immediate bombing reactions predictive of l

Predictors of discharge destination in patients with major traumatic injury: Analysis of Oklahoma Trauma Registry.

BACKGROUND: The ability to predict the need for discharge of trauma patients to a facility may help shorten hospital stay. This study aimed to determine the predictors of discharge to a facility and develop and validate a predictive scoring model, utilizing the Oklahoma Trauma Registry (OTR). METHODS: A multivariate analysis of the OTR 2005-2013 determined independent predictors of discharge to a facility. A scoring model was developed, and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) were evaluated for 2014 patients. RESULTS: 101,656 patients were analyzed. The scoring model includ

The venomous hair structure, venom and life cycle of Lagoa crispata, a puss caterpillar of Oklahoma.

The presence of a unique population of Lagoa crispata, puss caterpillar, in western Oklahoma is reported. A detailed microscopic examination shows the structure of the L. crispata spines resemble the type 4 spines described by [Kawamoto, F., Kumada, N., 1984. Biology and venoms of lepidoptera. In: Tu, A.T. (Ed.), Handbook of Natural Toxins, Insect Poisons, Allergens and other invertebrate venoms, vol. 2, pp. 291-332 (ch. 9)]. The major food source of L. crispata are the leaves of oak (shin oak). The high tannin content of this food source results in spine extracts high in oak tannins. These ex

Clinical experience with HIV-infected patients at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center: an update.

We reviewed the course of 545 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients seen between 1983 and March 30, 1991. A majority were Caucasian homosexual or bisexual men, while parenteral drug abusers represented a smaller proportion than seen nationwide. In the 274 patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), the distribution of AIDS-defining conditions was generally consistent with those reported in studies from elsewhere in the United States. However, toxoplasmosis remained relatively uncommon. There was a slightly higher incidence of disseminated histoplasmosis compared

The epidemiology of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, 1981 through 1985.

From 1981 through 1985, a total of 851 laboratory-confirmed cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever were reported in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Annual incidence rates in each state increased from 1981 through 1983, ranging from a 17% increase in Arkansas to a 137% increase in Texas. In the period 1984 through 1985, the annual incidence rates in each state decreased over 50%. A total of 519 cases were males. A majority of cases (51%) were 19 years of age or younger. April through August were the months of onset of symptoms for 83% of the cases. Differences in distribution of month of onset of

Characterizing the Burden of Tobacco-Associated Cancers in Oklahoma: A Demographic and Geographic Perspective, 2018-2022.

BACKGROUND: Despite declining national smoking rates, Oklahoma continues to experience high tobacco use, particularly among groups such as American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) and rural populations. Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of cancer, and tobacco-related cancer incidence remains a significant public health concern in Oklahoma. METHODS: Articles were selected through a structured literature search and narratively summarized by key study characteristics and results. We then analyzed tobacco-related cancer incidence data from the Oklahoma Central Cancer Registry (1999-2022), focusin

DETECTION OF VECTOR-BORNE INFECTIONS IN LIONS AND TIGERS AT TWO ZOOS IN TENNESSEE AND OKLAHOMA, USA.

Protozoal and bacterial vector-borne infections are frequently diagnosed in domestic felids. However, with the exception of Mycoplasma haemofelis and Cytauxzoon felis, their occurrence in managed nondomestic felids housed in the United States is largely unknown. Following a case in February 2020 of fulminant cytauxzoonosis in an African lion (Panthera leo), EDTA-whole blood samples were collected opportunistically from February 2020 through June 2020 from 34 adult tigers (Panthera tigris) and eight adult African lions from the same sanctuary in eastern Tennessee as well as 14 adult tigers from

Oklahoma prosthesis: resection of tumor of clavicle and chest wall reconstructed with a custom composite graft.

Tumors involving the clavicle by primary or metastatic growth may require clavicular resection often with rib resection. The resulting cosmetic and functional impairment of clavicular resection may be significant with a sloped appearing shoulder girdle and chronically impaired movement of the upper extremity. We report a 48-year-old woman presenting with a bulky metastatic renal cell mass of her left clavicle extending to the chest wall. We report en-bloc clavilculectomy and chest wall resection with a novel method of reconstruction using a single methyl methacrylate and prolene composite pros

Effects of age on lactose malabsorption in Oklahoma Native Americans as determined by breath H2 analysis.

Breath H2 excretion was used to determine lactose malabsorption in 30 health females and 30 healthy males between the ages of 3 and 64 yr who were at least 7/8 Native American. The test meal consisted of 5 ml reconstituted nonfat dry milk (0.25 g lactose) per kg of body weight. On the basis of breath H2 tests in 15 control subjects with normal oral lactose tolerance tests, a response factor of 20 ppm was selected as the upper limit for lactose absorbers. Of the 60 subjects in the study group, 36 (60%) were classified as lactose malabsorbers since they had a response factor of 20 ppm or greater

Standardizing Preoperative Care for Elective Spine Surgery: The University of Oklahoma Elective Spine Surgery Protocol.

As rates of spinal surgery in the United States continue to rise, the field has undergone a paradigm shift towards standardized, evidence-based care aimed at optimizing surgical outcomes. Indeed, numerous Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have emerged and demonstrated significant success in improving outcomes in spinal surgery. In this article, we present a preoperative optimization protocol for elective spinal surgery from our own institution, which is in a state with notoriously high rates of comorbidities relative to the rest of the nation. This standardized protocol addresse

Collective health behavior and face mask utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic in Oklahoma, USA.

BACKGROUND: Face mask use offers an important public health tool for reducing the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), yet the politicization of COVID-19 has resulted in uneven adherence. This study assesses the effects of setting characteristics and the sociodemographic composition of crowds on group-level masking rates. METHODS: We conducted 123 site observations of masking behavior at public locations across Oklahoma (USA) between June and September 2020. We used analyses of variance and t-tests to examine variation in masking and ordinary least squares regression to model the ef

A New Isosporan (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina (Aves: Passeriformes: Turdidae), in Oklahoma.

The wood thrush, Hylocichla mustelina, is a North American passerine bird closely related to other thrushes and is widely distributed across North America. Nothing is known of the coccidian parasites of this bird. Feces from a single H. mustelina found dead in McCurtain County, Oklahoma were collected and examined for coccidia; it was found to be passing a new species of Isospora. Oocysts of Isospora gmelini n. sp. are subspheroidal to ellipsoidal with a smooth bilayered wall, measure (length [L] × width [W]) 19.5 × 16.5 μm, and have a L/W ratio of 1.2; a micropyle and oocyst residuum were abs

PREVALENCE OF BABESIA SPP., EHRLICHIA SPP., AND TICK INFESTATIONS IN OKLAHOMA BLACK BEARS (URSUS AMERICANUS).

American black bears (Ursus americanus) are commonly infested with ticks throughout their range, but there are few surveys for tick-borne disease agents in bears. To characterize tick infestations and determine the prevalence of current infection with Babesia spp. and past or current infection with Ehrlichia spp. in newly re-established populations of black bears in east central and southeastern Oklahoma, US, we identified adult (n=1,048) and immature (n=107) ticks recovered from bears (n=62). We evaluated serum and whole blood samples from a subset (n=49) for antibodies reactive to, and chara

The association between natural gas well activity and specific congenital anomalies in Oklahoma, 1997-2009.

BACKGROUND: Natural gas drilling may pose multiple health risks, including congenital anomalies, through air pollutant emissions and contaminated water. Two recent studies have evaluated the relationship between natural gas activity and congenital anomalies, with both observing a positive relationship. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate whether residence near natural gas wells is associated with critical congenital heart defects (CCHD), neural tube defects (NTD), and oral clefts in Oklahoma, the third highest natural gas producing state in the US. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort s
