The telencephalon of adult Scincella tsinlingensis was detected by light and electron microscopy, which will be used as the basis for further neurobiological comparative studies. The telencephalon of S. tsinlingensis was consisted of paired olfactory bulbs, paired cerebral hemispheres, and a telencephalon medium or impar. Main-olfactory bulb can be classified into six layers such as olfactory nerve fibers layer, glomerular layer, external plexiform layer, mitral layer, internal plexiform layer, granular layer and ependyma layer. The dorsal part of telencephalon contained the cortex and dorsal

To date, cortical regions activated by olfactory stimulation have not been identified precisely in humans. In this study we used magnetic source imaging to localize neuronal activity following olfactory stimulation with two odorants, hydrogen sulphide and vanillin. Peak latencies of the olfactory event-related magnetic fields corresponded to the ascending and descending slopes of the major deflections of the olfactory event-related potentials (OERP). At these latencies we obtained consistent activation of the anterior-central parts of the insula (agranular-periallocortical and dysgranular regi

The absence of olfactory input causes structural brain remodelling in humans. Mainly, the olfactory bulb and cortical olfactory areas are involved in this process. The aim of our study was to investigate volume changes of the gray and white matter in a group of subjects with an impaired but not complete loss of olfaction (hyposmia). Magnetic resonance images of hyposmic subjects and an age- and sex-matched control group were acquired on a 3T scanner. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was performed using VBM8 toolbox and SPM8 in a Matlab environment. The analysis revealed significant gray matter vo

Oxytocin promotes social interactions and recognition of conspecifics that rely on olfaction in most species. The circuit mechanisms through which oxytocin modifies olfactory processing are incompletely understood. Here, we observed that optogenetically induced oxytocin release enhanced olfactory exploration and same-sex recognition of adult rats. Consistent with oxytocin's function in the anterior olfactory cortex, particularly in social cue processing, region-selective receptor deletion impaired social recognition but left odor discrimination and recognition intact outside a social context.

Research studies that focus on understanding the onset of neurodegenerative pathology and therapeutic interventions to inhibit its causative factors, have shown a crucial role of olfactory bulb neurons as they transmit and propagate nerve impulses to higher cortical and limbic structures. In rodent models, removal of the olfactory bulb results in pathology of the frontal cortex that shows striking similarity with frontal cortex features of patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative disorders. Widely different approaches involving behavioral symptom analysis, histopathological and molecular alte

Chronic olfactory disorders, including the complete loss of the sense of smell (anosmia), are common. Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), structural changes in the cerebral gray matter (GM) of a group of patients with anosmia compared with a normosmic, healthy control group were evaluated. Patients with anosmia presented a significant decrease of GM volume mainly in the nucleus accumbens with adjacent subcallosal gyrus, in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPC) including the middle and anterior cingulate cortices, and in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPF

This study investigated human BOLD responses in primary and higher order olfactory cortices following presentation of short- and long-duration odorant stimuli using a 3-T MR scanner. The goal was to identify temporal differences in the course of the response that might underlie habituation. A short-duration stimulus (9 s) consistently activated the primary olfactory cortex (POC). After a long stimulus (60 s), the temporal form of the response differed in different parts of the olfactory network: (1) The POC (piriform, entorhinal cortex, amygdala) and, interestingly, the hippocampus and, to a c

To address the impact of COVID-19 olfactory loss on the brain, we analyzed the neural connectivity of the central olfactory system in recently SARS-CoV-2 infected subjects with persisting olfactory impairment (hyposmia). Twenty-seven previously SARS-CoV-2 infected subjects (10 males, mean age ± SD 40.0 ± 7.6 years) with clinically confirmed COVID-19 related hyposmia, and eighteen healthy, never SARS-CoV-2 infected, normosmic subjects (6 males, mean age ± SD 36.0 ± 7.1 years), were recruited in a 3 Tesla MRI study including high angular resolution diffusion and resting-state functional MRI acqu

Hyposmia is common in Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). We evaluated the pattern of olfactory functional connectivity (FC) in AD and PDD to uncover neural correlates that are related to olfactory dysfunction. This study enrolled 57 patients with AD and PDD and 25 control subjects. Using a seed-based approach, we compared the resting-state network from the seed-region-of-interest in the olfactory bulb, olfactory tract, piriform cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) between groups. The PDD group showed lower FC with striatal-thalamic-frontal regions from the olfa

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a major public health problem may lead to olfactory dysfunction. However, little is known about brain responses to odors in TBI olfactory loss patients. Nineteen healthy controls and forty TBI olfactory dysfunctional patients (19 with hyposmia and 21 with anosmia) underwent a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan when two odors (peach and coffee) were presented intranasally using a computerized olfactometer. Olfactory performance was measured using the "Sniffin' Sticks" test. TBI patients with hyposmia or anosmia showed decreased odor-induced brain activati

Many electrophysiological studies have been conducted on the 'limbic system', which is known to play a crucial role in mnemonic, emotional, and olfactory functions. Because of the difficulty in accessing such deep brain structures under in vivo conditions, in vitro brain slice preparations are often used. Recertly, an isolated whole brain preparation in which multi-synaptic circuits and the intracellular activity they generate are well preserved has also become available. In this paper, we described about the studies of the olfactory circuits by using this unique preparation. This experimental

Parosmia is a common olfactory disorder. In this condition, odors are perceived in a different quality than usual. This distorted olfactory percept is typically reported to be unpleasant. Little is known about the pathophysiology of this phenomenon. Previous studies demonstrated smaller volumes of the olfactory bulbs in patients with parosmia compared to subjects without parosmia. In order to investigate structural brain alterations in areas beyond the olfactory bulb, in the current study voxel-based morphometry was applied. A group of 22 parosmic patients was compared with control subjects ma

Destructive lesions were made in the right olfactory bulb of 16 adult opossums. Following postoperative survival periods of 4 to 31 days, the animals were sacrificed and perfused with 10% Formalin. Frozen sections of the brain were cut in either the coronal, horizontal, or sagittal plane and processed by the Fink-Heimer II method. Degenerating axons of olfactory bulb neurons were traced caudally in the ipsilateral lateral olfactory tract (LOT). Small lesions revealed a topographic representation of the olfactory bulb within the LOT. The dorsal, lateral, and ventral parts of the bulb were, resp

While COVID-19-associated olfactory dysfunction leads to gray matter (GM) structural alterations, it remains unclear whether these structural GM alterations are specific to COVID-19. To address this, we investigated GM changes in patients with post-infectious olfactory dysfunction (PIOD) who tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study included 65 patients with PIOD who were SARS-CoV-2 negative and 65 healthy controls. Olfactory function was assessed using the Sniffin’ Sticks test and olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs). T1-weighted MRI scans were analyzed using three complement

In normal subjects olfactory evoked cortical potentials are seen with latencies of 150 m/sec and 350 m/sec. To evaluate the site of potential generators in central nervous pathways olfactory evoked cortical potentials were registered in patients with well-defined lesions of the central nervous system and the maxillary nerve. Absence of the first potential was seen in lesions of the brain-stem and the maxillary nerve. Absence of the second potential was observed in lesions of the frontal cerebral medulla and the temporal cortex. No olfactory potentials were found in circumscribed lesions of the

According to the hyperarousal theory of insomnia, difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep occurs as a result of increased cognitive and physiological arousal caused by acute stressors and associated cognitive rumination, placing the individual in a perpetual cycle of hyperarousal and increased sensitivity to sensory stimulation. We tested the hypothesis that difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep would be associated with increased functional connectivity between primary sensory processing and motor planning regions. Fifty-eight healthy adults (29 men, 29 women) completed a self-re

BACKGROUND: Olfactory training (OT) has emerged as a first-line non-pharmacological treatment for olfactory dysfunction. This study aimed to determine whether multisensory stimulation during OT improves olfactory recovery and to explore the underlying neurobiological mechanisms.
METHODOLOGY: Individuals aged 18-80 years with post-viral or idiopathic olfactory dysfunction lasting for at least one month were recruited. Participants were allocated to either multisensory OT (MOT, odor-congruent video clips during OT) or conventional OT (COT) for three months. A subset of participants underwent re

The most common form of synaesthesia is grapheme-colour synaesthesia. However, rarer forms of synaesthesia also exist, such as word-gustatory and olfactory-gustatory synaesthesia, whereby a word or smell will induce a specific. In this study we describe a single individual (LJ) who experiences a concurrent olfactory stimulus when presented with congruent visual images. For some visual stimuli, he perceives a strong and automatic olfactory percept, which has existed throughout his life. In this study, we explore whether his experiences are a new form of synaesthesia or simply vivid imagery. Unl

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been suggested to increase the risk of memory decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the main cause of dementia in the elderly. However, direct evidence about whether COVID-19 induces AD-like neuropathological changes in the brain, especially post recovery from acute infection, is still lacking. Here, using postmortem human brain samples, we found abnormal accumulation of hyperphosphorylated tau protein in the hippocampus and medial entorhinal cortex within 4-13 months post clinically recovery from acute COVID-19, together with prolonged activation of gli
