Biological and Radiological Findings of Acquired Anterior Open Bite: A Case Report.

A 60-year-old female patient was referred to the Department of Functional Exploration, Pain, and Orofacial Dysfunction complaining of a pain in the preauricular regions and a recent apparition of an open bite impeding the masticatory function. In the general examination, the patient had a medical history of polyarthralgia with 7 years of evolution. She had no history of trauma in the maxillofacial region. Clinical examination revealed a restricted mouth opening and pain in the right and left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) areas. The palpation of this region revealed the presence of crepitations

Management Strategies for Open Bite Relapse: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The purpose of orthodontic therapy is to correct malocclusion and produce a stable outcome that endures over time. Long-term stability can be difficult to achieve, and many patients relapse after treatment, particularly in instances of open bite relapse (OBR). This systematic review aimed to analyze different types of management strategies for OBR and conduct a meta-analysis to find the best method of dealing with relapse. A comprehensive search was carried out across six major online databases using relevant keywords pertaining to our study, including "open bite relapse," "orthodontic retenti

A clinical approach to managing open-bite malocclusion associated with severe crowding.

Open bite has been identified as one of the most challenging malocclusions in orthodontics. The treatment approach is complex, the resulting esthetics may not meet the patient's expectations, and the chance of recurrence is high. A 13-year-old girl presented a skeletal Class II malocclusion associated with anterior and posterior open bite, maxillary transverse deficiency, severe anterior crowding, and a hyperdivergent facial pattern. Orthodontic treatment was performed with a Haas expander and subsequent standard edgewise appliances, and the 4 first premolars were extracted. The vertical contr

[Conservative and simple rehabilitation to compensate posterior open bite: partial bonded restauration].

Posterior open bite is a malocclusion characterized by the absence of vertical contacts between the occlusal surfaces of the posterior teeth of the opposing arches. It can be uni- or bilateral and involve one tooth or more. Several aetiologies of these posterior open bite have been described, including pathological eruptions, dento-maxillary dysmorphosis and temporo-mandibular dysfunctions. When considering a correction or compensation, there are several therapeutic options (orthodontic and/or surgical and/or prosthetic). Recent developments in adhesive dentistry (bonding biomaterials, ceramic

Orthodontic treatment of open bite involved in diffuse hypercementosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Open bite is considered one of the most complicated malocclusions in orthodontic treatment. In this study, the authors successfully treated total open bite involved in hypercementosis using orthodontic miniscrews. CASE DESCRIPTION: A woman aged 25 years 8 months had total open bite. Her occlusal contact at the maximum intercuspation was present at the right second molars. A panoramic radiograph showed diffuse hypercementosis. The titanium miniscrews were interradicullay implanted between the first and second molars, and intrusion force was applied for 14 months. After active treat

Masticatory evaluation of anterior open bite malocclusion using the colorimetric capsule method.

This pediatric study aimed to assess the masticatory function of patients with anterior open bite through a method that utilizes colorimetric capsules. The sample consisted of 106 patients aged 7-11 years, of whom 51 presented with anterior open bite (experimental group) and 55 presented with normal overbite (control group). The colorimetric capsules used in this evaluation contained basic fuchsin granules, which were used to produce a solution after they were ground during chewing. Each patient was asked to chew 1 capsule for 20 seconds. The absorbance of the obtained solutions was analyzed w

Use of clear aligners in open bite cases: an unexpected treatment option.

In open bite case treatments, a proper diagnostic differentiation is essential in determining the appropriate corrective procedures. Dental open bites are generally more responsive to treatment with orthodontics alone, whereas skeletal open bites often require a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. Patient selection and treatment principles for non-surgical open bite treatment routinely include fixed appliances both labial or lingual. However, removable clear aligners have gained a consistent popularity in the treatment of complex cases including open bite malocclusions. In th

Factors related to stability following the surgical correction of skeletal open bite.

OBJECTIVES: If a skeletal anterior open bite malocclusion is treated by orthognathic surgery directed only at the mandible, the lower jaw is repositioned upward in a counter-clockwise rotation. However, this procedure has a high risk of relapse. In the present study, the key factors associated with post-surgical stability of corrected skeletal anterior open bite malocclusions were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen orthognathic patients were subjected to cephalometric analysis to assess the dental and skeletal changes following mandibular surgery for the correction of an anterior op

Compensatory orthodontic treatment of Angle Class II malocclusion with posterior open bite.

The present case report addresses the treatment of an Angle Class II malocclusion in an adult female patient, long face pattern, with posterior open bite and dental arches extremely expanded, due to previous treatment. The patient and parents rejection to a treatment with orthognathic surgery led to orthodontic camouflage of the skeletal discrepancies. This clinical case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics (BBO) as one of the requirements to become a BBO Diplomate.

Moulding of the generate to control open bite during mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

Distraction osteogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton has become a widely accepted, safe, and effective means of craniofacial reconstructive surgery. Despite excellent results in general, there are still some uncertainties related to the procedure, such as development of an anterior open bite (AOB) during mandibular distraction. The aim of this study was to examine whether 'moulding of the generate', i.e. use of intermaxillary elastics during the active distraction phase is possible to close the mandibular plane angle and open bite. Three subjects, 13- and 15-year-old males and a 7-year-old fe

Stomatognathic function in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and in developmental open-bite subjects.

Patients affected with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis present clear radiological alterations of the condyles of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) due to the inflammatory process, with a prevalence ranging from 17 percent to 63 percent. This work is a comparison between a group of subjects with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis presenting signs and symptoms of TMT dysfunction and a group of the same age not suffering from any rheumatic morbidity, but presenting an open bite > 3 mm. The aim is to verify whether the open bite can induce an alteration in mandibular function comparable to that observed

Occlusal and functional conditions after surgical correction of anterior open bite deformities.

The dental occlusion and alterations in orofacial muscles were studied in 267 patients whose severe anterior open bite had been treated with a Le Fort 1 intrusion osteotomy with or without an advancement sagittal split osteotomy about 6 years ago. Only 17% of those patients showed anterior contact, and 20% had no vertical overlap of mandibular and maxillary central incisors at all. Tongue position, activity of masticatory muscles, lip competence, lip-incisor relationship, and breathing mode were assessed. Statistically significant correlations were found between tongue positions and occlusion
