A 25-year-old woman with myopia who had an AC pIOL implantation in the left eye and posterior chamber pIOL implantation in the right eye developed bilateral granulomatous panuveitis 2 months after the second surgery. Physical examination showed bilateral Koeppe and Busacca nodules. Fluorescein angiography showed diffuse vascular and retinal pigment epithelial leakage in both eyes. With assessment of sympathetic ophthalmia, treatment with a high-dose systemic steroid was started. Oral cyclosporine and azathioprine were later added. The association of uveitis and vitiligo has long been established in specific disease entities: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome and sympathetic ophthalmia. A 3-year-old boy underwent secondary implantation of an iris supported intraocular lens following extraction of a unilateral congenital cataract. Eight months later, he developed a bilateral plastic uveitis which, in spite of intensive medical treatment, resulted in NPL (no perception of light) in the implanted eye and 2/60 vision in the fellow eye. Sympathetic ophthalmia possibly played a role in the pathogenesis of the uveitis.

Professor Sergei Semjonovic Golovin (1866-1931) is considered as one of the founders of ophthalmology in Russia. He received a worldwide reputation thanks to his achievements in ocular surgery and pathology. He introduced new surgical techniques such as Golovin's operation (Exenteratio orbitosinualis), Golovin's osteoplastic frontal sinus operation, ligation of orbital veins, and opticociliary neurectomy. He also introduced his "cytotoxic theory" to interpret sympathetic ophthalmia. He was a reputable professor of ophthalmology.
