Herpetic keratitis in a patient who used two different prostaglandin analogue ophthalmic solutions: a case report.

PURPOSE: To report a patient with glaucoma who developed recurrent herpetic keratitis while using two different prostaglandin analogue ophthalmic solutions. RESULTS: A 72 year-old male patient with primary open angle glaucoma and a history of herpetic keratitis in the left eye experienced recurrent herpetic keratitis in the left eye after treatment with latanoprost ophthalmic solution. Herpetic flares were controlled after discontinuation of latanoprost. Adding travoprost ophthalmic solution 0.004% to his glaucoma therapy was also associated with a recurrence of herpetic keratitis. Contamination of ophthalmic solutions by 2,4-Di‑tert-butylphenol: an evaluation of leachability and in vitro cytotoxicity.

INTRODUCTION: Multi-dose ophthalmic devices equipped with complex dropper systems can release substances, such as 2,4-Di‑tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP), that could then contaminate the patients. The objectives of this study were to determine if and how much 2,4-DTBP migrates into eye drops and to assess its cytotoxicity threshold. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tests simulating patient use of eye drops were carried out on 10 ophthalmic medications including ciclosporin = CsA at 1, 10 and 20 mg/mL, tacrolimus = TAC and voriconazole = VCZ. Drops were collected twice a day for one month and analyzed by liq

Inhibitory Effect of Ophthalmic Solutions against SARS-CoV-2: A Preventive Action to Block the Viral Transmission?

In 2020, a global pandemic was declared following the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the pathogen responsible for COVID-19. The risk of infection is high due to the ease of transmission, which can occur orally, through droplets, or via contact with contaminated surfaces and objects. It has also been demonstrated that the ocular surface can constitute a transmission route, especially in hospital settings, where health care workers can become a dangerous source of infection. In order to increase prevention and reduce the spread of the virus on the ocular surface, the antiviral activity of already-markete

Latanoprost ophthalmic solution in the treatment of open angle glaucoma or raised intraocular pressure: a review.

Latanoprost is a prostaglandin F2-alpha isopropyl ester prodrug which is rapidly hydrolyzed by esterases in the cornea to the biologically active latanoprost acid. When latanoprost is topically administered into the eye, the cornea seems to act like as a slow-release depot to the anterior segment. One hour after administration maximum concentration is found in the iris, followed by the anterior chamber and the ciliary body. Despite extensive research, controversy remains about the real mechanism of action of this drug. Immunohistochemical data have shown that the intraocular pressure (IOP) red

In vitro and in vivo potency of moxifloxacin and moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.5%, a new topical fluoroquinolone.

Fluoroquinolones are a class of synthetic antibacterial agents that were approved for ocular therapy in 1991 and have become popular therapy for the treatment and prevention of various ocular infections. These agents are synthetic, broad-spectrum, rapidly bactericidal, and have good penetration into ocular tissues. Their main mechanism of action is the inhibition of bacterial enzymes needed for bacterial DNA synthesis. However, antibiotic resistance occurred swiftly to the earlier fluoroquinolones and better fluoroquinolones were needed. The fourth-generation fluoroquinolones, such as moxiflox
