Awareness of Charles Bonnet syndrome among ophthalmologists: a survey study.

PURPOSE: Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is a condition characterized by complex visual hallucinations in individuals with significant visual impairment. Despite its prevalence, CBS remains under-recognized, leading to delayed diagnoses and unnecessary distress for patients and their families. Awareness among ophthalmologists is critical for early identification and management. This study aims to evaluate the awareness and understanding of CBS among ophthalmologists and identify gaps in knowledge, diagnosis, and management practices. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 322 ophthalmologists was

Optic Disc Classification by Deep Learning versus Expert Neuro-Ophthalmologists.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic performance of an artificial intelligence deep learning system with that of expert neuro-ophthalmologists in classifying optic disc appearance. METHODS: The deep learning system was previously trained and validated on 14,341 ocular fundus photographs from 19 international centers. The performance of the system was evaluated on 800 new fundus photographs (400 normal optic discs, 201 papilledema [disc edema from elevated intracranial pressure], 199 other optic disc abnormalities) and compared with that of 2 expert neuro-ophthalmologists who independently rev

Neurological Imaging in Acquired Cranial Nerve Palsy: Ophthalmologists vs. Neurologists.

PURPOSE: Cranial nerve palsies often require neurological imaging by MRI. Guidelines on whether or not to utilize MRI have been absent or lack clarity. In daily practice, both neurologists and ophthalmologists treat patients with cranial nerve palsy and determine whether neuro-imaging is required. There appear to be differences in policy with respect to neuro-imaging. The question, which will be answered in this study, is the following: to what extent do differences in policy exist between ophthalmologists and neurologists regarding imaging by MRI of patients with acquired ocular cranial nerve

Chronic Ocular Surface Pain: An Optometrist and Ophthalmologist Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic ocular surface pain (COSP) is defined as ocular pain that is perceived to originate from the ocular surface and persists for more than 3 months. Clear epidemiological data on COSP prevalence are lacking. METHODS: In 2025, a total of 100 eye care providers were surveyed, including 50 optometrists and 50 ophthalmologists. The survey aimed to assess the percentage of their weekly patient volume diagnosed with COSP, the diagnostic methods used, contributing etiologies, and current management strategies. Additionally, practitioners identified key indicators of successful trea

Comparison of Glaucoma Diagnosis by Telemedicine, In-Person Ophthalmologist, and Optometrist.

PRÉCIS: Diagnosis of glaucoma through telemedicine demonstrates moderate agreement with in-person ophthalmologist (MD) and in-person optometrist (OD) diagnosis, providing evidence that telemedicine is a timely, accurate screening method in settings where an in-person visit may not be feasible. OBJECTIVE: To compare diagnostic agreement of glaucoma between in-person MD, in-person OD, and a simulated telemedicine program. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of patients with normal optic nerve structural and functional imaging and new patients referred for glaucoma evaluation examined

Unilateral recurrent periorbital pain: the role of the neuro-ophthalmologist.

Unilateral recurrent periorbital pain is an aspecific symptom that may have originated from different orbital and ocular regions and structures that share the same innervation and can be provoked by different pathological disease. Since in some cases the patient is unable to associate with certainty the pain to a specific structure or region, a neuro-ophthalmological evaluation may be addressed to highlight signs useful to suspect the involvement of the eye, the optic nerve, the extra-ocular muscles, or intraorbital tissue or the cavernous sinus. This review describes the clinical patterns of

[Typical questions from the rheumatologist to the ophthalmologist and cooperating radiologist].

Patients with rheumatic disorders may suffer from various acute or chronic ocular symptoms. In addition to pain and motility disorders, loss of vision, and irreversible deterioration of the eye may occur. Red eye, a symptom easily identified, can be a sign of rheumatic involvement, but can also have a variety of other causes. Dry eye is frequently present in rheumatic patients. It is always important that infections and masquerade syndromes are ruled out in the differential diagnoses of any ocular inflammation. In cases of ocular inflammation the ophthalmologist should determine the diagnostic

The authors evaluate 100 tumour of the chiasmal region (80 pituitary adenomas, 8 meningiomas, 7 craniopharyngiomas, 5 other tumours) and present their neuroophthalmological findings. In comparison with the findings in pituitary adenomas of the last decade the number of bilateral blindness was lower by 2.4%, the number of the optic atrophy was lower by 48.1% and the number of patients with a vision worse then 1.0 by 60.6%. Before the operation 91.2% patients had defects in the visual fields (monolateral in 5% and bilateral in 86.2%). The authors point out a relatively long period between the fi

The ophthalmologist's role in multidisciplinary assessment of developmentally handicapped children.

Among 200 children who had received routine ophthalmic and orthoptic examinations as part of their evaluation by a multidisciplinary assessment team, it was found that there was a high incidence of ocular defects. These defects included refractive errors (98 children), squint (74 children), nystagmus (15 children), cataract, retinopathy and optic atrophy. This high incidence of ocular defects emphasized the need for the routine ophthalmic examination of developmentally handicapped children in order to detect and treat ocular conditions which might otherwise have gone undetected, and enabled th
