Anaemia, diarrhoea and opportunistic infections in Fell ponies.

This report summarises clinical and pathological observations on Fell pony foals with a range of signs that included ill thrift, anaemia, respiratory infection, glossal hyperkeratosis and diarrhoea. Some of the foals had normochromic, normocytic anaemia and some had low levels of plasma proteins, including immunoglobulin G. Antibiotic and supportive treatment was ineffective and all affected foals died or were killed on humane grounds. Postmortem examination of 12 foals and tissues from 2 other foals revealed a range of lesions that included glossal hyperkeratosis, typhlocolitis, intestinal cr

Opportunistic infections with Strongyloides stercoralis in renal transplantation.

Opportunistic infections with the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis occur most often in patients with impaired T lymphocyte function, including recipients of renal allografts. Occult intestinal infection can remain quiescent for more than 30 years, becoming apparent only after the initiation of immunosuppression. Pulmonary and gastrointestinal symptoms predominant as initial clinical manifestations in patients with strongyloides hyperinfection or dissemination. Although thiabendazole remains the treatment of choice for all forms of strongyloidiasis, the duration of therapy must be individuali

Three opportunistic infections associated with ectopic corticotropin syndrome.

Cytomegalovirus pneumonia, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and pulmonary and disseminated aspergillosis occurred simultaneously in a 66-year-old white man with oat cell carcinoma and ectopic corticotropin production. Hypokalemia, a recent normal chest roentgenogram, and a large left adrenal mass on a computed tomographic scan confused the initial clinical evaluation. The aspergillosis proved fulminant and lethal.

Opportunistic infections in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) results in a T lymphocyte deficiency and, consequently, a susceptibility to opportunistic infections with organisms that previously were better known as causes of disease in patients with Hodgkin's disease or recipients of immunosuppressive therapy. Pneumocystis carinii, Candida albicans, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are among the most frequently observed pathogens in AIDS patients, followed by atypical mycobacteria, Toxoplasma gondii, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella sp, and herpes simplex virus. Cryptosporidia sp, rarely encountered in iatrog

Tissue diagnosis of selected AIDS-related opportunistic infections.

Opportunistic infections are the most common initial manifestations of AIDS and, in many instances, are first encountered in surgical specimens. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonitis is by far the most frequent infection seen in biopsy specimens of AIDS patients. Most pathologists are familiar with its histopathologic presentations from previous experience. By contrast, many other opportunistic infections are either new or present clinically and pathologically in unfamiliar ways. Cytomegalovirus affects primarily the alimentary tract and lung. Colitis is the most common presentation. Penetrating ul

Opportunistic infections of the retina and posterior segment.

Opportunistic infections of the retina are becoming a more frequent diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as immunosuppressed patients become more common. Viral, fungal, protozoan, and bacterial agents may be encountered. Diagnostic and therapeutic considerations, illustrated by case histories, are presented in this article. Viral infections are characterized by progressive exudation and hemorrhagic necrosis in a segmental distribution corresponding to the retinal vasculature. Protozoan, fungal, and bacterial infections may demonstrate more focal lesions with greater vitreous involvement. Diagn

[Opportunistic fungal infections of ent organs. Part 2].

The review of literature summarized information about main fungal pathogens and theirs proportions in infections affecting the ENT areas. Different nosological forms of fungal diseases of upper respiratory tract and ear were considered, and listed the main clinical manifestations. Microbiological diagnosis of mycoses affecting the ENT organs is based on microscopic, mycological, immunological and molecular-genetic studies. The review paid particular attention to the treatment of fungal infections of the areas. It presented the classification of modern antifungal drugs, and described regimens a

Opportunistic ocular infections in the setting of HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to highlight recent changes in opportunistic ocular infections (OOIs) in the era of modern combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), in the setting of HIV-infected patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Improvements in modern cART has led to a progressive decline in the incidence of OOIs and mortality among patients with AIDS. Not only has there been a decreasing incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, but there also has been a decline in progression of such retinitis when it does occur in AIDS patients, since the introduction of cART. Nevertheless, CMV

Opportunistic Infections in Biological Therapy, Risk and Prevention.

Patients being treated with biological therapies are at increased risk for serious infections, including opportunistic infections. Although more is known about opportunistic infection risk with older biologics, such as antitumor necrosis factor drugs, there is less knowledge of opportunistic infection risk with newer biological therapies. The incidence of certain opportunistic infections (tuberculosis, herpes zoster, pneumocystosis) has been rigorously evaluated in large observational studies. However, data are more limited for other infections (histoplasmosis, nontuberculous mycobacteria). In

'Occam's Scissors': opportunistic infections in advanced HIV infection.

The authors report the case of a new diagnosis of advanced HIV-1 infection with a blood CD4 cell count of 0.003×10(9)/L (2%), presenting with weight loss, night sweats, diarrhoea and anorexia. Symptoms were due to disseminated histoplasmosis (confirmed pulmonary and colonic disease), Pneumocystis pneumonia and oral candidiasis highlighting the limitations of 'Occam's razor' with advanced HIV infection.

Opportunistic yeast infections: candidiasis, cryptococcosis, trichosporonosis and geotrichosis.

Opportunistic yeast infections are diseases caused by fungi which normally are saprophytic and do not cause disease in humans or animals. The prevalence of these diseases has been increasing due to immunosuppressive, corticosteroid, and long-term antibiotic treatment following organ transplantation or after serious metabolic, hematological, or immunological diseases. We review epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of the four "big" opportunistic yeast infections: candidiasis, cryptococcosis, trichosporonosis, and geotrichosis.

The Pseudomonas aeruginosa opportunistic pathogen and human infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a Gram-negative environmental species and an opportunistic microorganism, establishes itself in vulnerable patients, such as those with cystic fibrosis or hospitalized in intensive care units. It has become a major cause of nosocomial infections worldwide (about 10% of all such infections in most European Union hospitals) and a serious threat to Public Health. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics have also led to the selection of resistant strains against which very few therapeutic options exist. How an environmental species can cause human infections remains a key que

Epidemiology of opportunistic fungal infections in Latin America.

This review discusses the epidemiology of the most clinically relevant opportunistic fungal infections in Latin America, including candidiasis, cryptococcosis, trichosporonosis, aspergillosis, and fusariosis. The epidemiologic features, including incidence, of some of these mycoses are markedly different in Latin America than they are in other parts of the world. The most consistent epidemiologic data are available for candidemia, with a large prospective study in Brazil reporting an incidence that is 3- to 15-fold higher than that reported in studies from North America and Europe. Species dis

Lessons learned about opportunistic infections in southeast Asia.

Southeast Asia is a region where the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS is one of the fastest growing in the world. Tuberculosis (TB) has grown along with the HIV epidemic. TB is not only the most common AIDS-defining illness but is also the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in AIDS patients. Cryptococcosis (meningitis or disseminated) is one of the most common opportunistic infections in AIDS patients. Cryptococcal meningitis is the first in the differential diagnosis considered with meningeal irritation. Penicillosis, a unique systemic mycosis, is an important emerging public hea

Clinical presentation and significance of emerging opportunistic infections.

In recent years the clinical face of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome has changed significantly as a consequence of use of prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and combination antiretroviral therapy. In this context several opportunistic pathogens have emerged as causes of clinically important disease. Many of these infective agents have previously been defined by specific geographical locations. Their clinical presentation frequently mimics other (non) opportunistic infections with which they may co-exist. The diagnosis is frequently delayed as the diagnostic possibility
