The perceived position of stationary objects can appear shifted in space due to the presence of motion in another part of the visual field (motion drag). We investigated this phenomenon with global motion Gabor arrays. These arrays consist of randomly oriented Gabors (Gaussian windowed sinusoidal luminance modulations) whose speed is set such that the normal component of the individual Gabor's motion is consistent with a single 2D global velocity. Global motion arrays were shown to alter the perceived position of nearby stationary objects. The size of this shift was the same as that induced by

INTRODUCTION: Clinical assessment of facial type and facial proportions is an important element of orthodontic diagnosis and subsequent treatment planning. Because of the subjective nature of this procedure, it is important to identify factors that could affect final judgment. One such factor that has been shown to affect facial perception in general might be the configural relationship of internal parts of the face. Our aim in this study was to assess whether configural changes in a face affect the subjective evaluation of facial type.
METHODS: The frontal photographs of 2 white boys, aged 1

Where do we perceive an object to be when it is moving? Nijhawan [1] has reported that if a stationary test pattern is briefly flashed in spatial alignment with a moving one, the moving element actually appears displaced in the direction in which it is moving. Nijhawan postulates that this may be the result of a mechanism that predicts the future position of the moving element so as to compensate for the fact that the element will have moved position from the time at which the light left it to the time at which the observer becomes aware of it (as a result of the finite time taken for neural t

Four new patients with oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODD) have been examined. The salient and fairly constant features of ODD appear to be (1) unique facial appearance, (2) microcornea with other inconstant ocular findings, (3) syndactyly of the hands with additional characteristic phalangeal aberrations, (4) diffuse skeletal dysplasia, (5) enamel dysplasia, and (6) trichosis. Echographic studies indicate that ODD globes have microcornea with otherwise normal dimensions. An increased number of vessels crossing the optic discs was observed in three patients from one family. The distance between

We show a 90° shift in the perceived direction of a well-known motion illusion, based on the dot-pair separation in dynamic Glass patterns. The change can be explained with a cortical model incorporating extra-classical receptive fields. We employed dynamic Glass patterns: a sequence of patterns of randomly positioned, but consistently oriented dot-pairs, presented in rapid succession. Although dynamic Glass patterns contain no coherent motion, observers perceive strong motion in either direction parallel to the dot-pair orientation for small dot-pair separations (< 30 arc min). This has been

Stimuli were presented that consisted of a stationary row of black-bordered white rectangles. As observers watched, each rectangle in turn from left to right changed from white to black. The final rectangle did not change colour but moved off from left to right. The sequential colour change suggested motion from left to right, and observers reliably reported a visual impression that this illusory motion kicked or bumped the last rectangle, thereby making it move. The impression was stronger when the sequential colour change was faster, but was not significantly affected by the number of the re

It has been the matter of some debate why we can experience vivid dynamic illusions when looking at static pictures composed from simple black and white patterns. The impression of illusory motion is particularly strong when viewing some of the works of 'Op Artists, such as Bridget Riley's painting Fall. Explanations of the illusory motion have ranged from retinal to cortical mechanisms, and an important role has been attributed to eye movements. To assess the possible contribution of eye movements to the illusory-motion percept we studied the strength of the illusion under different viewing c

By adding retinal and pursuit eye-movement velocity one can determine the motion of an object with respect to the head. It would seem likely that the visual system carries out a similar computation by summing extra-retinal, eye-velocity signals with retinal motion signals. Perceived head-centred motion may therefore be determined by differences in the way these signals encode speed. For example, if extra-retinal signals provide the lower estimate of speed then moving objects will appear slower when pursued (Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon) and stationary objects will move opposite to an eye movemen

EEG and MEG were simultaneously recorded to study the visual gamma-band (30-70 Hz) responses. The electrical gamma-band response phase-locked to stimulus onset can be subdivided into a central component at 39 Hz and an occipital component at 36 Hz. A new high-frequency magnetic phase-locked response recorded over the occipital lobe is described. Its topography is complex and probably reflects the activity of multiple sources. Both electrical and magnetic high-frequency responses differ in topography from the low-frequency responses in the same latency range, suggesting that at least partially

An object moving against a textured background is accurately perceived when viewed foveally, but when viewed peripherally the object's perceived direction of motion may deviate from veridical by as much as 90 deg. The illusory direction is oblique to the orientation of the background contours, which may themselves be moving or stationary. In several experiments, we examined the boundary conditions for occurrence of the illusion and tested hypotheses concerning its basis. This illusion of perceived direction dramatizes differences in motion processing between the fovea and the periphery.

Forward locomotion generates a radially expanding flow of visual motion which supports goal-directed walking. In stationary mode, wide-field visual presentation of optic flow stimuli evokes the illusion of forward self-motion. These effects illustrate an intimate relation between visual and motor processing. In the present fMRI study, we applied optic flow to identify distinct interfaces between circuitries implicated in vision and movement. The dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) was expected to contribute to wide-field forward motion flow (FFw), reflecting a pathway for externally triggered motor c

OBJECTIVE: To make clear the characteristics of motion sickness induced by reversed vision and to see whether it can be used in motion sickness experiments.
METHODS: 10 healthy young men experienced walking tests wearing up-down or left-right reversing prisms, and parallel swing test on different days with intervals of 5-7d. Ataxia and motion sickness symptoms induced by walking wearing reversing prisms and those by parallel swing were observed. The reversed vision tolerance index (RVTI) and linear acceleration tolerance index (LATI) were calculated by an empirical formula.
RESULTS: Both typ

Evidence is mounting that differences in postural instability can be used to predict who will experience strong illusory self-motions (vection) and become sick when exposed to global patterns of optical flow (e.g., Apthorp et al., PLoS One 9(12):e113897, 2014; Stoffregen and Smart, Brain Res Bull 47:437-448, 1998). This study compared the predictive ability of traditional and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) based measures of postural activity. We initially measured spontaneous fluctuations in the centre of foot pressure (CoP) of our subjects as they stood quietly with their eyes open

Recent functional MRI has demonstrated that illusory contours can activate the primary visual cortex. Our investigation sought to demonstrate whether this correlation reflects computations performed in the primary visual cortex or feedback effects from shape processing area LO. We explored this in a patient who has a bilateral lesion to LO, but a functionally spared V1. Our data indicate that illusory contours are unable to influence behaviour without visual area LO. Whilst we would not claim that our data provide evidence for the 'cognitive' nature of illusory contours, they certainly suggest

Smooth pursuit eye movements change the retinal image motion of objects in the visual field. To enable an observer to perceive the motion of these objects veridically, the visual system has to compensate for the effects of the eye movements. The occurrence of the Filehne-illusion (illusory motion of a stationary object during smooth pursuit) shows that this compensation is not always perfect. The amplitude of the illusion appears to decrease with increasing presentation durations of the stationary object. In this study we investigated whether presentation duration has the same effect when an o

Illusion decrement for the Müller-Lyer and Horizontal-Vertical illusions was examined. The experiment consisted of an initial adjustment of an illusion followed by 20 test trials, each with an intervening 60-sec. intertrial interval during which a comparator line and a standard line set to equality were visually inspected for 0, 20, 40, or 60 sec. After each intertrial interval the length of the comparator line was reset by the experimenter to either 0 or 90 cm, and subjects then adjusted its length to perceived equality with the standard line (42 cm). Illusion decrement was inversely related

This study examines the change in the perceived distance of an object in three-dimensional space when the object and/or the observer's head is moved along the line of sight (sagittal motion) as a function of the perceived absolute (egocentric) distance of the object and the perceived motion of the head. To analyze the processes involved, two situations, labeled A and B, were used in four experiments. In Situation A, the observer was stationary and the perceived motion of the object was measured as the object was moved toward and away from the observer. In Situation B, the same visual informati

A series of demonstrations were created where the perceived depth of targets was controlled by stereoscopic disparity. A closer object (a cloud) was made to jump back and forth horizontally, partially occluding a farther object (a full moon). The more distant moon appeared stationary even though the unoccluded portion of it, a crescent, changed position. Reversal of the relative depth of the moon and cloud gave a totally different percept: the crescent appeared to flip back and forth in the front depth plane. Thus, the otherwise-robust apparent motion of the moon crescents was completely aboli
