Direct-bandgap transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are appealing candidates to construct atomic-scale spin-optical light sources owing to their valley-contrasting optical selection rules. Here we report on a spin-optical monolayer laser by incorporating a WS2 monolayer into a heterostructure microcavity supporting high-Q photonic spin-valley resonances. Inspired by the creation of valley pseudo-spins in monolayers, the spin-valley modes are generated from a photonic Rashba-type spin splitting of a bound state in the continuum, which gives rise to opposite spin-polarized ±K valleys due t

Indium phosphide (InP) has high carrier mobility and excellent optoelectronic properties, demonstrating significant potential for applications in optical communications and photodetectors. Its two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets exhibit unique optical nonlinearity due to quantum confinement effects, yet their third-order nonlinear optical properties remain rarely explored. In this work, we prepare and characterize InP nanosheet dispersions, investigate their spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) behaviors, and demonstrate their applications in multifunctional nonlinear photonic devices. By studying

The observation of triplet-triplet absorption and emission spectra of salicylidene-m-bromo-aniline in solution, is complicated by the possible colored isomer formation during the optical pumping for yotta-photonic excitation at room temperature. The short-lived (singlet-singlet) and long-lived (triplet-triplet) absorption spectra were recorded phographically by microsecond flash and nano-second laser flash photolysis techniques. Salicylidene-m-bromo-aniline complexes were purified by repeated recrystallization until further recrystallization produced no further changes for X-ray diffraction pa

Precise manipulation of microscopic objects is crucial for applications in biomedicine, robotics, and nanotechnology. However, achieving stable trapping, controlled release, and rapid propulsion with a single laser beam remains a significant challenge. Here, we elucidate the optical forces and torques exerted on chiral liquid crystal polymer microparticles when the laser wavelength is within their photonic bandgap and demonstrate the application in an optical blaster. Photons with polarization handedness opposite that of the chiral helical structure in the particle are transmitted and can be u

Integration of functional materials and structures on the tips of optical fibers has enabled various applications in micro-optics, such as sensing, imaging, and optical trapping. Direct laser writing is a 3D printing technology that holds promise for fabricating advanced micro-optical structures on fiber tips. To date, material selection has been limited to organic polymer-based photoresists because existing methods for 3D direct laser writing of inorganic materials involve high-temperature processing that is not compatible with optical fibers. However, organic polymers do not feature stabilit

The recent emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials with exceptional optical nonlinearity has driven advances in next-generation nonlinear photonic devices beyond classical optics. While integrating these materials into fiber-optic platforms offers unprecedented functionalities in quantum systems, realizing telecom-band in-line photon-pair sources based on highly nonlinear vdW materials remains challenging. Here, we report photon-pair generation centered at telecom wavelength via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a fiber-integrated device incorporating a ferroelectric vdW crystal, Sn

A transparent polarisation sensitive phase pattern exhibits a position and polarisation dependent phase shift of transmitted light and it represents a unitary transformation. A quantum ghost image of this pattern is produced with hyper-entangled photons consisting of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) and polarisation entanglement. In quantum ghost imaging, a single photon interacts with the pattern and is detected by a stationary detector and a non-interacting photon is imaged on a coincidence camera. EPR entanglement manifests spatial correlations between an object plane and a ghost image plane,

We present an optical scheme for a SWAP test (controlled swap operation) that can determine whether the difference between two unknown states (photons) using cross-Kerr nonlinearities (XKNLs). The SWAP test, based on quantum fingerprinting, has been widely applied to various quantum information processing (QIP) schemes. Thus, for a reliable QIP scheme, it is important to implement a scheme for a SWAP test that is experimentally feasible. Here, we utilize linearly and nonlinearly optical (XKNLs) gates to design a scheme for a SWAP test. We also analyze the efficiency and the performance of nonl

Reconfigurable interfaces between confined optical modes in integrated photonic chips and structured light in free space would benefit fundamental optical science and photonic technologies. Here we exploit the anisotropic nonlinear susceptibility tensors associated with thin-film lithium niobate to construct nanophotonic chip-space interfaces capable of generating and multidimensionally engineering structured light via injections of photons to on-chip waveguides. Harnessing the nonlinear Čerenkov radiation in integrated nonlinear microring resonators, we tailor the spatial profile, polarizatio

Distinguished by their long lifetimes, strong dipolar interactions, and periodic confinement, moiré excitons are fertile ground for realising interaction-driven excitonic phases beyond conventional semiconductor systems. Formed in twisted or lattice-mismatched van der Waals heterostructures, these excitons are shaped by a periodic potential landscape that enables the engineering of flat bands, strong interactions, and long-lived localised states. This has opened pathways to explore strongly correlated phases, including excitonic insulators, superfluids, and supersolids, potentially stable even

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) photonics provides a powerful route to extreme dispersion engineering, strong field confinement, and unconventional wave phenomena. A closely related concept, photonic doping, employs subwavelength nonmagnetic dielectric inclusions in ENZ media to enable exotic responses such as perfect-magnetic-conductor behavior and simultaneous epsilon-and mu-near-zero states. However, photonic doping has remained limited to microwave and far-infrared regimes due to intrinsic losses in optical ENZ materials. Here, photonic doping is demonstrated at optical frequencies by embedding a

The production of enantiomerically pure compounds remains a vital and valuable objective in modern organic chemistry due to their broad applications in fields such as biosensing, optics, electronics, photonics, catalysis, nanotechnology, and drug or DNA delivery. Optically pure α-hydroxy ketones, in particular, are key structural components in many drugs and natural products with significant biological activity. Among these, benzoin type α-hydroxy ketones, which possess two adjacent functional groups, a carbonyl and a hydroxy group, are especially important. These functional groups can be easi

We describe a novel method for adapting a two-photon scanning microscope to enable simultaneous detection of two-photon generated visible fluorescence and single-photon generated near-infrared (nIR) fluorescence. In this configuration, nIR fluorescence is routed through a single-mode optical fiber before detection by a photomultiplier tube. This fiber coupling offers two advantages: first, the optical fiber functions as a pinhole aperture, allowing for improved optical sectioning of the nIR signal; second, it minimizes nIR background fluorescence. To validate the effectiveness of this design,

Electronic and photonic technologies have transformed our lives-from computing and mobile devices, to information technology and the internet. Our future demands in these fields require innovation in each technology separately, but also depend on our ability to harness their complementary physics through integrated solutions1,2. This goal is hindered by the fact that most silicon nanotechnologies-which enable our processors, computer memory, communications chips and image sensors-rely on bulk silicon substrates, a cost-effective solution with an abundant supply chain, but with substantial limi

An efficient interface between a spin qubit and single photons is a key enabling system for quantum science and technology. We report on a coherently controlled diamond nitrogen-vacancy center electron spin qubit that is optically interfaced with an open microcavity. Through Purcell enhancement and an asymmetric cavity design, we achieve efficient collection of resonant photons, while on-chip microwave lines allow for spin qubit control at a 10 MHz Rabi frequency. With the microcavity tuned to resonance with the nitrogen-vacancy center's optical transition, we use excited state lifetime measur

We propose a photonic procedure using cross-Kerr nonlinearities (XKNLs) to encode single logical qubit information onto four-photon decoherence-free states. In quantum information processing, a decoherence-free subspace can secure quantum information against collective decoherence. Therefore, we design a procedure employing nonlinear optical gates, which are composed of XKNLs, quantum bus beams, and photon-number-resolving measurements with linear optical devices, to conserve quantum information by encoding quantum information onto four-photon decoherence-free states (single logical qubit info
