Community optometrist referral of those aged 65 and over for raised IOP post-NICE: AOP guidance versus joint college guidance--an epidemiological model using BEAP.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To identify the percentage of those aged 65 and over who might be referred by community optometrists as ocular hypertensive suspects in the post-NICE era when differing guidance is followed by community optometrists. METHOD: The authors constructed an epidemiologically based model utilising Bridlington Eye Assessment Project (BEAP) data. Ocular hypertensive suspects' data were subjected to two algorithms (Association of Optometrists (AOP) and Joint College) to determine referral of suspects if community optometrists followed either algorithm. RESULTS: 85 of 1643 people (5.2%

The community optometry workforce in Scotland: supporting sustainable eye care delivery.

BACKGROUND: In early 2024, NHS Scotland published community optometrist workforce and activity data at a national level for the first time in the UK. These data are now over two years old, and anecdotal reports suggest changes amongst optometrists' work-patterns post-pandemic. To identify if that data continues to be reflective of the community optometrist workforce, the aim of this paper is to provide equivalent data for 2022 and 2023. METHODS: Anonymised information about the active community optometrist workforce was extracted from routinely collected eye examination claim data, for period

Optometric Practice Patterns for Acute Central and Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Optometrists are often the first providers to evaluate patients with acute vision loss and are often the first to diagnose a central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). How quickly these patients present to the optometrist, are diagnosed, and referred for evaluation are major factors influencing the possibility of acute therapeutic intervention. Our aim was to survey the U.S. optometric community to determine current optometric practice patterns for management of CRAO. METHODS: An anonymous seven-question survey was emailed in 2020 to the 5,101 members of the American Academy of Opto

A survey of ocular therapeutic pharmaceutical agents in optometric practice.

BACKGROUND: In all Australian states optometrists are permitted to use diagnostic topical ocular drugs in the practice of their profession. In addition, legislation has just been passed in Victoria allowing optometrists to prescribe topical S4 medications for ocular conditions. Changing optometric legislation to incorporate S4 ophthalmic agents is a topical issue within optometry. METHODS: By postal survey, we asked Queensland optometrists to gauge their level of education, current mode of practice and whether they were in favour of gaining access to prescription-only therapeutic medications.
