Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. Extract: From Chemical Characterization to Inflammatory Profiling and Its Potential Effects in a Zebrafish Model of Spinal Cord Injury-A Morphological and Molecular Study.

Natural compounds are increasingly explored for their ability to modulate multiple molecular pathways involved in inflammation and oxidative stress and for their therapeutic potential. Among these, Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. has attracted growing interest due to its rich phytochemical profile; however, the biological properties of unripe fruits remain largely unexplored. In this study, a hydroalcoholic extract obtained from unripe O. ficus-indica fruits was characterized for its chemical composition, antioxidant capacity, and concentration-dependent embryotoxic profile and subsequently in

Dietary indicaxanthin from cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica L. Mill) fruit prevents eryptosis induced by oxysterols in a hypercholesterolaemia-relevant proportion and adhesion of human erythrocytes to endothelial cell layers.

Toxic oxysterols in a hypercholesterolaemia-relevant proportion cause suicidal death of human erythrocytes or eryptosis. This process proceeds through early production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), release of prostaglandin (PGE2) and opening of PGE2-dependent Ca channels, membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalisation, and cell shrinkage. The present study was the first to reveal that a bioavailable phytochemical, indicaxanthin (Ind) from cactus pear fruit, in a concentration range (1.0-5.0 μM) consistent with its plasma level after a fruit meal, prevents PS externalisation and cell shri

Selection of Non-Saccharomyces Yeasts from Extreme Oenological Environments for Potential Use in Winemaking.

This study evaluated the oenological potential of two non-Saccharomyces yeast strains, Hanseniaspora opuntiae TR-5 and Zygosaccharomyces bailii L-25, isolated from extreme winemaking environments in southern Spain. Out of 156 yeast isolates screened from high-sugar musts and flor yeast biofilms, strains were selected based on their β-glucosidase activity, killer phenotype, and ethanol production, traits associated with aroma release and microbial competition. Fermentation trials on sugar-rich synthetic medium showed that both H. opuntiae and Z. bailii achieved ethanol yields of 10% v/v and res

Terpenoids in Young Cladodes of Wild, Semi-Domesticated, and Domesticated Prickly Pear Cactus.

In the genus Opuntia, domestication has led to marked changes in young cladodes, including alterations in morphology, physiology, and soluble fiber content. However, information on how domestication-related categories influence the composition and abundance of terpenoids in young cladodes remains limited. This study aimed to extract, identify, and quantify terpenoid compounds in young cladodes from nine Opuntia variants distributed along a domestication gradient. Cladodes measuring 17.5 ± 2.5 cm in length from five species were analyzed. Organic compounds were extracted from one gram of powder

Excessive Availability of Water for Irrigation Results in Cactus Cladode Powder with Fewer Organic Biomolecules and Reduces the Quality of the Biopolymeric Film.

The effect of different irrigation regimes on the physical and chemical properties of cactus cladode powder and its biopolymeric films was investigated. Plants of the genera Nopalea and Opuntia were grown under four irrigation regimes of: 0, 40, 80, and 120% evapotranspiration. The cladodes were harvested, their powder was obtained, hydrated, mixed with ethanol (70%), calcium lactate (5% w/v), and dried in an oven at 55 °C for 27 h to obtain biopolymeric films. The physicochemical and spectral data related to the multivariate analysis showed that the lowest irrigation regime (0-80% of ETc) for

Histopathology of sabra dermatitis: A case report.

Sabra dermatitis (SD) is a form of irritant contact dermatitis caused by penetration of small, hair-like glochids from Opuntia cactus into the skin. SD is a common problem among the farmers who are in close contact with prickly pears; however, the histopathologic criteria for this condition are not well defined. The purpose of this article is to present a well-documented case of SD and to acquaint pathologists with the entity.

CAZyme-guided modification of cactus and regional polysaccharides for food hydrocolloid applications.

Food-hydrocolloid performance depends on polymer architecture and processing history rather than ingredient name alone. This critical narrative review evaluates CAZyme-guided modification of cactus-derived pectic materials and related regional polysaccharides for food hydrocolloid applications. Opuntia mucilage and pectic fractions are the focal substrates; non-cactus pectins provide the closest mechanistic evidence, and arabinoxylan is retained only as a bounded comparison for substitution and oxidative crosslinking. Starch is considered only as a limited process benchmark and is not used to

Prickly Pear and Fibromyalgia: A Conceptual Protocol for Plant-Based Symptom Management.

Nutrition is being increasingly recognized as a modifiable adjuvant factor in symptom management, yet few studies have examined the direct contribution of fruit consumption to chronic disease outcomes. The existing research largely emphasizes broad dietary patterns or isolated nutrients, rather than specific fruit species and their complex bioactive profiles. This gap is particularly evident in conditions lacking disease-specific pharmacological treatments, such as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), where patients often depend on lifestyle adjustments and complementary strategies for symptom relief.

Effectively Enhancing the Physiological Activity and Sensory Quality of Whole Calamondin Puree via Yeast Fermentation.

To explore the feasibility of pure yeast fermentation in whole Calamondin puree (FWCP) for the utilization of the whole fruit, yeasts were isolated from naturally fermented Calamondin, and their fermentation characteristics were evaluated. The results indicated that all yeasts were able to ferment FWCP, reducing the sour taste by degrading citric acid, increasing the contents of nutrients (such as phenols and limonins) and volatile compounds, and enhancing the antioxidant activity and inhibition of α-glucosidase activity (p < 0.05). Among them, P. terricola QJJY1 and H. opuntiae QJJY14 exhibit

Sabra dermatitis: combined features of delayed hypersensitivity and foreign body reaction to implanted glochidia.

A striking dermatitis referred to by its colloquial designation of sabra dermatitis is associated with glochidia inoculation from the Opuntia cactus commonly known as the prickly pear. We report a 45-year-old woman who had an unexpected encounter with a cactus plant during a trip to Texas. She brushed up against the plant and was aware that she had been inoculated with several spines of the plant. Five days later she developed erythematous papules on the digits accompanied by swelling. The biopsy showed a very striking granulomatous reaction pattern within the dermis. There was a linear patter
